When she was born in the United States, her mother was a Chinese citizen and did not have a U.S. green card, so she automatically acquired Chinese nationality, she just did not give up Chinese nationality.

She also got US citizenship. A perfect win-win for her. She can go either way however she feels.

You would encounter difficulties with this line of reasoning when concerning Uyghur. After all, Uyghurs and Han Chinese are both considered Chinese exactly because of that human-created nation state called China.

When possible, People go where the opportunity is best. I don’t doubt her patriotism to the US. For Pete’s sake more then half the Chinese hockey team are foreigners.

Her winning gold, as a member of the Chinese diaspora must feel like reverse brain drain. There is a lot of talent in the US, so she won’t be missed, but if China attracts more and more of the best of the best, it could become worrying. It would be more proof to those that don’t want to fix the US, that as we lag behind, China is/has become a full spectrum peer competitor.

Btw, there are millions of Chinese living all over the world including Africa and Latin America. If they marry local people and have visibly Chinese looking children with them, how will they be received if they are high performers in their field?
