Smartphones and tablets are getting better and competing more with laptops and desktops. However, hyping up Apple is plain stupid. Apple's main competitor is not Lenovo. Apple's main competitors are Android compatible devices and Windows compatible devices. To a much lesser extent, you could toss in Linux.
People buy Apple because they are willing to pay a high price for simplicity and convenience. People buy Android devices and Windows devices because they want greater options.
Apple invented smartphones and popularized tablets, but Android smartphones and tablets quickly won lots of market share and now dominate when it comes to units sold.

In this regard, AMD and ATI still have lots of potential. The basic and proprietary CPU design from AMD and Intel is critical for compatibility with today's hardwares and softwares. I don't think the US government and Intel will easily give up this super important compatibility advantage to China.
