AMD the subject of takeover rumors by Chinese firm

AMD went downhill after intel revamped their R&D process and came out with the core2 duo line. From then on, it has been a whirlwind run for them where volumes grew exponentially and AMD just couldn't keep pace.

.
Yes customers decide what they will buy.
But AMD is usually cheaper than Intel with same performance.
If Chinese buy AMD, there will be more demand for AMD chips..
I guess most government order will switch to AMD chips..
But definitely no ban on Intel.
China is a super big market, Intel will still take a lot of market share.

i thought the customers determine what they'll buy??
are you saying if China buys AMD that'll ban Intel from the Chinese market??? Lenovo won't use Intel processor either??

The reality is desktop and laptop sales have leveled off due to phones and tablets taking away marketshare.

Look at this crazy fact:
‘Disappointing’ iPad Sales Make Apple Number 1 in Worldwide PC Sales | iPad Insight

"Apple’s total number of PC + tablet sales for the quarter was 20.4 million – with the iPad’s 16.4 million accounting for a whopping 80% of the total.

Oh, and the second place PC maker is Lenovo. Lenovo’s total number of PCs and tablets sold (15 million) doesn’t match the iPad sales number."

but now with Intel you barely are seeing any performance improvements though.

like for instance if you bought a Intel i5 2500K back in 2011 you wouldn't really get much improvement by buying a Intel i5 4670K today

AMD just rocks with for price/performance, but I wouldn't buy AMD if you do video/photo editing though

Only in the budget segment. AMD cannot compete with intel chips neither when it comes to heat dissipated neither on the basis of the raw computing power.

.
Consumer always compare products on a cost basis..
AMD chips may not be so good as Intel.
Yet with same money, AMD chips is better than AMD..
Also now computing power is far more than sufficient for normal consumer.
Heat is also not a problem as you have fans to cool it down..

Yes. Astonishing actually. Intel notwithstanding it's trailblazing run is running the risk of getting enveloped because the industry is changing.

Google nicely adapted themselves because of this desktop to handheld switch coming off in a big way. They acquired the most promising platform for handheld devices ( Android ); kept it open source to not taper off the influx of developers and embedding the google search deep in that platform.

Intel differentiated from AMD not by countering their claims that AMD runs "cooler" for similar performance levels ( recalling the pentium days ) but beat them with the sheer R&D spend and raw computing power. They have always been one step ahead when it came to miniaturisation of the transistors.

Time has now come for Intel to reposition themselves as a handheld chip manufacturer and it has had a moderate success till now.

The battle is already lost for smartphones with ARM and snapdragon coming up with octa core and whatnot. They can still create a market in the tablet segment which needs a tad higher performance than smartphones.

Yeah well that's because the software industry haven't been able to keep pace with the revolution in the hardware industry. None of the software/PC game make use of the real power of the cnetral processing unit any more. Yes Crysis 3 including. Absolutely none of the softwares make use of the multi core architecture expect for a few enterprise solutions.

Smartphones and tablets are getting better and competing more with laptops and desktops. However, hyping up Apple is plain stupid. Apple's main competitor is not Lenovo. Apple's main competitors are Android compatible devices and Windows compatible devices. To a much lesser extent, you could toss in Linux.

People buy Apple because they are willing to pay a high price for simplicity and convenience. People buy Android devices and Windows devices because they want greater options.

Apple invented smartphones and popularized tablets, but Android smartphones and tablets quickly won lots of market share and now dominate when it comes to units sold.

Windows laptops and desktops continue to greatly outnumber Apple laptops and desktops.

Higher performance laptops and desktops still have huge advantages over smartphones and desktops, which is why sales of higher performance laptops and desktops are doing well. Sales of lower performance laptops and desktops are losing out to smartphones and tablets. People who use computers for work and play clearly know this. I think current trends show a future where smartphones and tablets are used for simpler computer needs while laptops and desktops (and supercomputers) are used for more demanding computer needs.

In this regard, AMD and ATI still have lots of potential. The basic and proprietary CPU design from AMD and Intel is critical for compatibility with today's hardwares and softwares. I don't think the US government and Intel will easily give up this super important compatibility advantage to China.

You are missing the point. Apple laptop and desktop sales are trivial compared to their iPad sales..so talking about that segment is moot.

The surprise is their tablet sales outnumber Lenovo's PC sales. Is the traditional PC market share being reduced by people switching to tablets.

You're cherry picking data to hype up Apple.

(1) Lenovo does not equal traditional laptops and desktops. Traditional laptops and desktops are sold by Lenovo, Dell, HP, Sony, MSI, Asus, Acer, etc.

(2) If you actually read the details of the sales data instead of cherry picking data, then you would see that lower performance laptops and desktops are being replaced by smartphones and tablets. However, higher performance laptops and desktops are selling well.

(3) In terms of units sold, Android compatible tablets and smartphones greatly outnumber Apple tablets and smartphones.

My point still stands: AMD and ATI still have lots of potential.

Ok let me rephrase things so you can get off your Apple-centric focus - since you are basically agreeing with me.

It looks like tablets and phones are taking away market share from what was traditionally a segment controlled by Intel and AMD. The PC market seems to have leveled off and this is hurting both AMD and Intel. The tablet and phone market has taken off. To show an example of this just the tablet market (which was non existent a few years ago which is using non Intel and AMD chips) is outselling the top PC maker in sales.

You are not understanding what I'm saying.

Higher performance laptops and desktops (and network computers and supercomputers) will NOT be replaced by tablets and smartphones. Sales of higher performance laptops and desktops have been doing well. Lower performance laptops and desktops are being replaced by tablets and smartphones, and this trend will continue. Form factor will guarantee this.

Science fiction shows like "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and the recent "Star Trek" movies, engineers, video gamers, scientists, photography and video editors, programmers, and many other people clearly know that tablets and smartphones cannot come anywhere close to the raw power of a higher performance laptop, a higher performance desktop, a network computer, or a supercomputer. Again, this is due to form factor.

Here is my prediction of the future: tablets, smartphones, higher performance laptops, higher performance desktops, network computers, and supercomputers will coexist with each other and complement each other. Tablets and smartphones will be used for portability and lower performance needs. The other and much more powerful computers will be used for more stationery functions and higher performance requirements.

If AMD (and ATI) focuses on making CPUs, GPUs, and other components for higher performance laptops and desktops (and networks and supercomputers), then AMD (and ATI) should do well. If AMD (and ATI) also makes components for Android or tablets and smartphones, then AMD (and ATI) will perform even better.

This means AMD (and ATI) could have a bright future.

That is right. I see the world full of propaganda and BS hype written by people who do not spend a day in writing a single line of code.

There is no way desktop can be replaced in near and middle term. Mobile is just desktop complmentary.
