THE United States and its allies are considering whether to supply weapons to the Libyan opposition as coalition air strikes fail to dislodge government forces from around key contested towns.

France supports training and arming the rebels, and the Obama administration believes the United Nations resolution that authorised international intervention in Libya has the ''flexibility'' to allow such assistance ''if we thought that were the right way to go'', Obama spokesman Jay Carney said.

This is really strange!

. . .
Obama seems worst than Bush! They are tying to make more deaths of both sides! I feel really shame of UN.

Obama is not stupid, everybody wants cheap and short term solution.
He does not want to commit troops, as he will not be reelected.
Training libyan can go wrong, it is mujaheedeen all over again, it will come back to haunt US later.

. .
madness, these guys have a free hand to pursue whatever they want despite its failings, if this is not rule of strong over the weak than what is?

This is going beyond the UN mandate for the protection of civilians. A UNSC resolution doesn't mean carte blanche to do as you like.

That doesn't sound like a smart move at all.. oO

and I don't think it would be legal, because of the arms embargo.

the U.S record is not good enough. That is why they are not Trustworthy. .

Qaddafi on the other hand is the most stupid and stubborn ruler I have ever seen. . .

The west is going way way overboard on this one. What started as a somewhat justifiable 'No fly Zone' became a no holds barred aerial campaign and now that is about to be further extended to arming of the rebels against govt troops. There are already reports of Al Qaeda and assorted nut jobs gravitating towards the rebel's camps. soon we will have interested parties slipping in weapons and ammunition to Gadaffi and then we will have a game on. Not a good idea at all.
