It all depends on U.S policy and interests. Remember it was under a Republican Government that Pressler was passed - and it was under a Democrat Government that military aid started flowing to Pakistan in the late 1970s. I think U.S policy and interests will require Pakistan for a little while longer - as in well into the 2010s IMO.

According to H Khan - the same source - the Pakistan Military is working with two countries on its long-range SAM requirement. I think one of them is China and the other could be France.

Personally I think SL-AMRAAM is a good choice, the missiles we've already procured. IIRC during IDEAS 2006 the Raytheon official said that the SL-AMRAAM was in competition with MBDA Spada 2000 and Diehl BGT IRIS-T SL for Pakistan's requirement.

Those were different times during the Cold War. US' interests were to eliminate Sovjet influence in the region, China factor was minimum and the ME was relatively calm. We kept the door open for Uncle at all times.
Today Dems are looking up to new alliance(s) with India, they can keep us preoccupied by arming India upto teeth. I don't expect any reverse into US-Indian ties, it will only grow as Sino-Pak ties get closer and we become more powerfull.

France will deliver anything to anyone as long as the country can pay for it. US arms will always be a subject to possible sanctions and at this stage we cannot afford to be sanctioned.

Unless we take delivery with huge spareparts or get guarantees to get them thru third party, we'll always be at risk.

Beijing will be our top supplier no matter what happens to Indian MRC deal.
Tanvir Mahmood already hinted we're going for the J-10C designated as the FC-20 in great numbers.
Expect initial order for upto 50 jets by the end of the year but PAF requires 400-500 new jets, half of them will be JF-17 wich leaves space for 100+ FC-20's.

The FC-20/J-10 numbers will cross 100 and may reach closer to 150 by 2019. The PAF needs a fighter that could take over from the Mirage ROSE I/II/III types and strengthen its offensive capability. Given that only the F-16s have the kind of range and payload needed, it would put PAF at a disadvantage to rely on a single source.

Personally I liked the IRIS-T SL over the SL-AMRAAM, but I guess the military was thrown off because the former is still in development. SL-AMRAAM seems like a good system though for medium range. For long range the military is working with two countries, so we may see two different long-range systems - or something developed by Pakistan in conjunction with those countries. I just wonder what they'll replace RBS-70 with in the future, MICA VL? Umkhonto?

We need those F-16's and the FC-20's to replace the againg Mirage fleet without reducing the fleet. The latter could even be purchased with full ToT and produced in great number against lower unitcost.

I'm still counting on another gen 4.5 fighter, probably the Typhoon after 2010.
Finacially we'll be quite able to handle 2-4 squadrons for IDS and AS role.

here is a wild and crazy idea.we can spend money on reaserch and development.

I agree and may I suggest a SL-SD10.

That would be an awesome SAM system which we could probably hook up to the command and radar structure to the rumoured long range HQ9 system.

actually i think thsi is the sector where we are really very incapable

have we inducted HQ9 as it is a good system but the question is that do we have it

also i think that geeting modren SAMs is more important then anything else at this point of time as we do not have any modren system???

can anyone guide me in this topic that what do we have as surface to air
missiles i will be really thankful
