New Delhi: After 50 years of service, the phaseout of the MiG-21 will begin in 2017 as confirmed by Air Chief Marshal NAK Browne. It is expected to be replaced by the Light Combat Aircraft (LAC) Tejas.
IAF operates about 80 (four squadrons) of these Russian-origin planes in its fleet and due to the recurring problems in their engines, it had to ground all of them after a crash.
A few years ago, a study was conducted to check the problems in the engines of the aircraft and it was found that the R-29s engines have developed some defect which was very difficult to be corrected.

After the report, IAF took a considered decision about retiring these aircraft from operational service in a phased manner, the officials said. "The first to be phased out would be the two squadrons based in Kalaikunda and then by 2017, the remaining two deployed in Jodhpur would also be on their way out of the force," they said.
The squadrons based in Jodhpur had undergone upgrades at Hindustan Aeronautics Limited recently and that is why they have more life left in them, the officials said. IAF is also planning to phase out the crash-prone MiG-21 combat aircraft around the same time frame. MiG-23 fighter and bomber aircraft which were inducted in the 1980s have already been phased out.

Mig-21s are getting phased out and it started already. the older one will go now, Bisons will be there few more years which was upgraded with BVR.

Ok, Mig 21s can easily be replaced by the LCA which will perform well as a point defence fighter. But what about the Mig 27s???


I doubt that we will have 80 Rafales by then...

Yes, the LCA was intended to be a Mig 21 replacement for a very long time now. Both are light weight fighters which are used for point defence.
The initial order was around +40... dont remember exactly.

Firstly it is not about a 1:1 replacement (although that is what will happen eventually) but matching and boosting of capabilties as such it is fair to say that 1 Rafale is as capable as 4-5 MIG-27s. Like I've said in the past- towards the end of this decade the IAF's SQD will be taking a dip as the MIG-21,-27 and much of the JAG fleet are retired but thereafter it will soon recover quite rapidly and then grow from there.

Indian Air Force – 40 LCA Mk 1 aircraft on order. Plans to order LCA Mk 2 aircraft for 10 more squadrons (about 180 total aircraft) after completing production of LCA Mk 1.[83][84]
Indian Navy – Signed an order for six Naval LCAs at an approximate cost of US$ 31.09 million per aircraft.[4] The Indian Navy has a requirement for 50 Tejas aircraft.[44]

MKIs replace the bulk of the Mig 27s, after they replaced the Mig 23 now. Since they all have the same baseline weapons, that comes in handy too, but depending on the new squadron placements, some will also be replaced by Rafale. The squadron at the Hashimara AFS for example is said to be replaced by Rafales.

so total squadrons by 2022-2024 seems to be like...
17 squadrons of MKI.
12 squadrons of Lca.
7 squadrons of Rafale(possibly 3 more).
3 squadrons of Mig-29UPG.
3 squadrons of Mirage-2k5
1-2 squadrons of FGFA.
So total will be around 42-43 squadrons or 3 more if more rafales are chosen....
PS: not counting 120+ Jaguars.

If IAF placed order for more MKIs or Super 30s then i think there won't be much impact on over all fleet of IAF by the end of the decade.

Since we already have the production lines ready we can continue with their production easily even after 2017.

Lets say if IAF ordered 40 more MKIs then by the end of the decade we'll have :

Su30 MKI : 310 (270+40)
Rafale : 70 (18 by the end of 2016 n around 12-14 per year there on.)
LCA : 50 (thats the min.)
Mirage 2k : 50
Mig 29 UPG: 69
FGFA : 18
Jaguar : 120

Total : 687 or 38 Sq (taking Approx 18 per Sq )

With the addition of 120 Jaguars the total Sq can reach to 38 that would be more than the current strength n much more powerful too not to forget around 4-5 Sq of IN comprising of Mig 29k+Harrier+NLCA.

What r ur thought brother???:D
