As part of a boost to “Make in India”, the Ministry of Defense (MoD) has finally launched the call for tenders to develop six new generation stealth submarines in collaboration with foreign partners, a project worth Rs. 42,000 crore.

According to YOU sources, the Defense Ministry said the tender or RFP (request for proposal) “should be released by next month” to the Mazagon Docks (MDL) defense shipyard and shipbuilder private L&T for the submarine program, called Project-75 India (P-75I).

He further stated that the project is expected to be finalized by December 2021 at the earliest. The project will provide key technologies that will become a springboard for developing a fully indigenous submarine project (P-76).

The P-75I will become the first project to be launched under the Strategic Partnership Policy (SP) initiated by the current government in May 2017 to give a boost to “Make in India”. The submarine project or other SP projects will not be affected by the Defense Ministry’s arms import embargo.

As part of the plan, the Indian Navy will receive 18 conventional submarines as well as six nuclear-powered attack submarines (known as SSN) and four nuclear-powered submarines with long-range nuclear missiles (SSBN) to counter its adversaries, including China and Pakistan. .

Going forward, the two Indian or SP shipyards will submit their technical and commercial bids in response to the RFP with their preferred Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) among the five shortlisted by the Defense Ministry earlier. .

The five selected OEMs are Rubin Design Bureau (Russia), Naval Group-DCNS (France), ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (Germany), Navantia (Spain) and Daewoo (South Korea).

China has expanded its naval base with 50 diesel-electric and 10 nuclear submarines compared to the Indian Navy which only has two new Scorpene and 13 old (all commissioned over 20 years ago) diesel-electric conventional, with the exception of two nuclear-powered submarines.

Four other Scorpènes of French origin will be delivered by 2022 as part of the project-75 of more than Rs 23,000 crore underway at MDL.

Pakistan also currently has five submarines but will soon equip eight Chinese Yuan-class submarines, with air independent propulsion (AIP) for great underwater endurance.

It would be a dumb decision if we go for a new submarine system altogether if we go for the P75I project. Just go with additional Scorpenes to maintain commonality and uniformity among our fleet, ease of maintenance and to reduce all the logistical nightmares

The Russian offer is intriguing, as we are allowed to make as many submarines we want. And it comes with both VLS and AIP.

Indians are daydreaming too much as usual ... have they not learned their lessons of the disastrous Su-57/FGFA venture? No country would ever want to transfer their key technologies to India. Not Russia, not France. India wanted a JV for the Rafael but the French weren't even willing to transfer technology for that either, which is why India ended up having to buy off the shelf Rafaels for ridiculous prices. What makes the Indians think the French want to do that with their most advanced submarines?

Well the requirement is only for 6 more, so it doesn't matter how many they offer. I'm sure other firms would be more than willing to allow us to build as many as we want as long as we pay em

The idea is to move onto the P-76 project and completely design n build diesel-electric subs similar to how we achieved building our Arihant class
