What's new

Afghanistan in the 1950s and 60s

.
So all these women were in burqas and the men were wearing long flowing beards during the times of Zahir Shah and the communist regime. I guess it wasn't the Taliban after all who imposed it on them. I suppose it is part of the local culture.
absolutely!
what is interesting to note is that the society was modern and under the rule of King, people had freedom to live in their own way with a respectable position for women in society.
All this perhaps changed during early and mid 80s with internal strife that destroyed the very fabric of vibrant society that Afghanistan was.
Emergence and dominance of Taliban perhaps made the matter worse.
IMHO the nation needs time and support to regain its lost glory.

Surprised to see the woman in Saree. She looks like Indian national. Is that a picture from Indian Embassy in Kabul?

Really, I thought Taliban's were most Gullible peoples on Earth..........
May be I did not make myself clear. The reason I say you're gullible is because you seem to have bought into the narrative of us against them. If someone does not support the invading powers and their propaganda, then they must be supporters of the Taliban. Let me spell it out for you. I am rejecting that narrative. It does not mean I support the Taliban.

When a country is decimated the way Afghanistan has, then chaos will naturally ensue. But humans have this great capacity to create order out of chaos - if left alone. Had Afghanistan been left alone after the withdrawal of the Russians, they would have sorted things out eventually. The Taliban would not have lasted forever.

Shows us what happens if you take religion too seriously..... A open nation with a chance to develop turns into a dark age failed state
That failed state turned 2 invading super powers back to their home humiliated.
