Afghan transit trade'Treaty being used to bypass NATO supply suspension’

Pentagon has said that decision to open NATO supply routes is up to the Government of Pakistan.

US and NATO forces in Afghanistan will receive the supplies they need to perform their missions regardless of Pakistan’s closure of its border with Afghanistan, Pentagon officials said today.

Pentagon Press Secretary George Little and Navy Capt. John Kirby hope that Pakistan will reopen the border between the countries and return its troops to the border coordination centers. The centers are designed to avoid incidents like that of Nov. 26 when NATO ordnance accidently killed 24 Pakistani soldiers.

The two spoke during a Pentagon news conference.

The war effort in Afghanistan continues unabated by the closures, Little said. “We’re well-aware of the closures and potential impacts,” he said. “To date, there’s been no significant impact to our ability to provide for the war effort. That being said, we do believe that these are important supply routes, and we hope that in the near future they can be reopened.”

Good logistics systems are among the crucial factors for success in any military operation, and redundancy is key to logistics. About 30 percent of the supplies to NATO and US troops in Afghanistan travel through Pakistan. Other routes are taking up the slack.

NATO International Security Assistance Force commander Marine Corps Gen. John R. Allen “is comfortable” with his supply situation now, Kirby said. “So there have been no major muscle movements to alter the flow of logistics,” he said.

In response to a question, the Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense Captain John F. Kirby added that the decision to open the supply routes is up to the Government of Pakistan.

On the subject of President Zardari and rumours of his illness, Little said that while they did not want to comment, if he was suffering from an illness, they wished him well.

Sure sure....

Clever comments.

If NATO and US will receive the supplies they will need, then why bother with a long conversation after that?

Because the ball is in Russia's court, not in Pakistan's court. The decision of Russia in this regard is key to them. They already going to have NATO-Russia meet in couple of days.

Ah, and you think Putin will let them off the hook that easy ?

you might be interested to read Putin's comments regarding the trouble USA + NATO's been brewing regarding elections and protests.
Seems like there are more cards to be played before we wrap this table.

You are taking political gimmicks during election time seriously enough to consider them as evidence to the political mood between Russia and NATO?

Let's face it; if NATO is hard pressed for space, they can make offers to Russia that Russians simply won't refuse. See, diplomatic persuasion is done with a very different thinking than personal persuasion which is emotional. If they are "talking" to you with long speeches, it is because they are hedging whether they can make your politicians give in. Simultaneously, they are trying to engage Russia.

Now obviously this isn't pinching NATO so badly right now as it is shown here which is why they are also biding by the flow of water. As two big players, they both have big things to offer each other at any time they desire that this situation is a "must do".

OTOH Pakistan will totally lose all its cards of bargaining with NATO/US on anything at all if this is stretched beyond the limit.

Don't think emotionally; think from a politician's perspective that is running a nation.

What nonsense... from last 4 years in every speech Gilani never failed to mention that previous govt. signed this contract.
Therefore such statement from NATO is really surprising.

If Pakistan is put under sanctions again, we would have nothing left to lose and I say we offer a nuclear umbrella to Iran.

Let the games begin!

Just love this what you said, nuclear umbrella to Iran... let the games begin...

Saudis will die of shock, Iran and Pakistan will become regional power, Israel and india will loose all hopes

Pakistan = Manpower + food + technologies
Iran = oil + manpower + access to Israel (the main player)

if you add Afghanistan into the equation then
Afghanistan = best Manpower in the world...

Being a Pakistani I am programmed to think straight.
I am not capable of politician's thinking.

My comments were based on information regarding Putin's background.
