AERO India-2015: A Preview

Bolstering “Make in India” theme in defence manufacturing -- Aero India-2015 -- the 10th international edition of the aerospace and aviation exhibition at Bengaluru from February 18-22, will also include sectors like defence manufacturing and airport infrastructure besides aerospace, defence and civil aviation.

Describing the biennial event organized by Defence Exhibition Organisation (DEO) under the aegis of Ministry of Defence as being one of the largest premium airshows in Asia, Secretary (Defence Production) Shri G Mohan Kumar outlined the impetus of the “Make in India” initiative during the forthcoming edition of the event.

“We want to set ‘Make in India’ as the major theme of the exhibition and see ‘Make in India’ progress in the defence sector also,” Secretary (DP) Shri Kumar said at a curtain raiser for Aero India 2015 in New Delhi, today.

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi will inaugurate the premium air show. Besides 54 ministerial and other high-level delegations from several countries that are slated to attend the inaugural event, the exhibition will also see participation by over 600 companies, including 295 Indian and 328 foreign companies.

With 64 companies, USA is the leading participant in the exhibition among the 33 other countries participating. Others who are fielding more than 15 companies include France (58), UK (48), Russia (41), Israel (25) and Germany (17).

The pre-eminence of the exposition has grown manifold since the inaugural exhibition in 1996. Around 300 CEOs from Indian and foreign industries are expected to attend the event. Business-to-business (B2B) and round-table meetings of Indian companies with those of Israel, UK and Poland will also be held at the event.

Heads and senior representatives from the Indian Armed Forces and Paramilitary Forces besides Service Chiefs from nine foreign countries are also among those attending the event.

For the first time few states who want to be partners in defence production and are keen to set up defence-related industry and SEZz are also participating in the exhibition. These include Karnataka, Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh.

A “Make in India” Defence Manufacturing Investors Summit and Global CEOs Conference to be chaired by Defence Minister is also being held for the first time during the air show.

Speakers from leading Indian Defence Industries including TATA, Mahindra, L&T, Adani, Bharat Forge and Presidents’ of leading Indian Business Chambers (CII, FICCI, ASSOCHAM and PHD) will also share their vision on defence manufacturing in India.

Role of cyber security in defence, aerospace and civil aviation, public-private partnership, integrating Indian aerospace industry into a global supply chain, creation of infrastructure and enhancing regional-rural connectivity, empowering and incentivizing Indian MSMEs in defence and aerospace sectors, using defence offsets to create a vibrant domestic defence industrial base are among some of the topics to be featured at the CII, FICCI and PHD held airshow seminars.

Even as the number of business visitors is expected to rise by nearly 50 per cent from the last edition to 1,50,000 this year, the air show is invariably a huge attraction for aviation aficionados who throng to the event to witness the static and air display by various aircraft including fighter, transport, helicopter and aerobatic display teams.

While the number of aircraft participating in static and air displays is tentatively 72, scintillating and enthralling displays by Indian Air Force Sarang Team, air display teams from Sweden, UK, Czech Republic and open sky jump by USA Special Forces are among the major attractions at Aero India-2015.

Among the foreign military aircraft that will be seen at the airshow include F-15C Eagle, Lockheed F-16C, Boeing KC-135, Boeing C-17 A Globemaster III, Boeing P-8A Posedon, Rafale Dassault and Emb-145 I.

The foreign civil aircraft participation includes PC-12 NG, Falcon 2000, Phenom 100E, Boeing B 75, Boeing A 75, Viking, Catwalk, WASP, RRJ 95, EMB 505, Bell 407 GX Helicopter, King Air 350 ER, 19-seater Turbo Prop AI Industry, Z Lin Z 50 LX, Oma Sud Sky Car, Falcon 7 X and Dornier 228-New Gen.

Also on display will be scintillating and enthralling displays by the Indian Air Force Sarang Team, air aerobatics teams from Sweden, UK and Czech Republic.

At least 72 aircraft will be participating in the 10th international edition of the aerospace and aviation exhibition from February 18-22.

OIS-AT to launch dual-use radar systems at Aero India

Bengaluru, February 9:
OIS Advanced Technology (OIS-AT), manufacturer of technologies across defence and homeland security, will launch advanced technology radars at the next Aero India show here.

“The company is to launch four advanced technology, dual-use radar systems for air and ground surveillance at the Aero India,” Sanjay Bhandari, founder Chairman and Managing Director of the OIS group of companies, told reporters.

‘A breakthrough’
A breakthrough for the Indian aerospace and defence sector, these advanced radar systems are designed, developed and manufactured entirely by OIS-AT.

The four surveillance radar systems leverage advanced technology developments that are under patent filings and they are designed for domestic and global market requirements and as the owner of the Intellectual Property (IP), OIS-AT is accelerating its global sales initiatives with the launch at Aero India 2015, said Bhandari.

“I am sure this is just a beginning and we will continue to blaze new trails in manufacturing newer, more innovative products for India and world markets,” he added.

Further commenting on these systems, Bhandari said, these products targeted for aviation safety for both military and civilian airports, OIS-ATs true 3D Bird Detection, Tracking and Monitoring and Deterrence Radar System which is a global first has an impressive Deterrence option, using directed bio-acoustics (sound) and an eye-safe laser both of which are automatically controlled by the radar system.

Tech tie-ups
The company is also aligning itself for manufacture and upgrade of air defence systems. “We are aligning to usher in the latest defence technologies, OIS Advanced Technology will be announcing few tech tie-ups and collaborations as the OEM for India for advanced air defence systems for select military programs in India,” said Bhandari.

These technology collaborations are with a number of NATO Alliance country based companies will have OIS-AT bid for the L 70 Successor Air Defence Gun program (L 70S) of the Indian Army, the Close In Weapon System (CIWS) and the Pechora System Upgrade Air Defence programs of the Indian Air Force.

Aero India 2015: Zen Technologies to display aviation simulation prowess

Zen Technologies, an Indian pioneer in simulation technology, will be displaying a broad range of capability-rich simulators at Aero India 2015 -- among them a rotary wing simulator jointly developed with Rockwell Collins.

Zen Technologies amp; Rockwell Collins recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding to combine their strengths in simulation and training to offer advanced and high fidelity aviation simulation solutions to Indian customers, a company statement said.

The display will include a Zen anti-aircraft air defence simulator (Zen AAADS) designed to train missile operators on procedures in both simulated and field conditions as well as psycho-physiological training experienced at the time of launch.

Also on view will be a Zen UAV mission simulator -- a comprehensive system designed to support basic, operational and mission training for external pilots, internal pilots, mission commanders, observers/special payload operators and image interpreters.

The Zen war-gaming solutions on view provides a doctrine-neutral solution for joint-services/combined and standalone operations. The gen-next constructive simulation supports both conventional and non-conventional operations.

This apart, there will be the Zen smart target system an electro-mechanical, software-driven, acoustical projectile detection and reporting system designed to be used in outdoor ranges for live small arms firing and the Zen TacSim with indoor tracking system (ITS) designed to meet the training needs of forces tasked to combat enemy/terrorists operating from built-up area/buildings by physical intervention.

Zen Technologies, incorporated in 1993 with headquarters in Hyderabad, has over the years designed, developed and manufactured various types of training equipment and simulators. The products developed in-house meet high qualitative standards and are cost-effective, the statement said.

The company has supplied over 450 simulators to over 100 customers across all the three services, state and central police forces of India and other countries.

Aero India 2015: MoD says it doesn’t get bigger than this

Bengaluru, Feb 09: The Ministry of Defence (MoD) on Monday blew the conch for the 10th edition of Aero India 2015. It is now confirmed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will chant newer mantras to attract more devotees towards the Make in India ‘temple of hope.' The five-day show set to begin in Bengaluru from February 18 is now being branded as the biggest show ever.

Addressing a group of aerospace and defence journalists via video conferencing from Delhi, Mohan Kumar, Secretary Defence Production, said that besides aerospace, defence and civil aviation, this edition will also showcase sectors like defence manufacturing and airport infrastructure. The biennial event is organised by the Defence Exhibition Organisation (DEO), under the command and control of the MoD.

"Among the many firsts of this year's event will be an Investors' Summit and Global CEOs' Conference with focus on Make in India. The event will be chaired by Defence Minister (Manohar Parrikar). There will be around 300 CEOs (150 each from India and abroad) attending this year's show," Mohan Kumar said.

He said the gross area has doubled from 125000 sq.m in 2013 to 250000 sq.m in 2015. "We are expecting 1,50,000 business visitors against 1,00,000 in the previous show," Kumar said.

Will the show stay in Bengaluru next time?

To a specific question from OneIndia, whether the next edition of Aero India (2017) will be moved out of Bengaluru, Kumar said: "We have no idea." However, sources said that one group of officials within the MoD, backed by a section of aerospace and defence industry, are batting for a shift in the venue from next time. Bengaluru's growing infrastructure, the high-rise buildings, sky-rocketing rentals, limited possibility to expand the show area at Air Force Station Yelahanka are some of the factors cited for this thought process.

Make in India and MoD's role

To another query whether the MoD is willing to go the extra mile to support the private industries to jump on to the Make in India wagon, Kumar said: "Make in India is still in the initial stages. Leading industries will be willing to come onboard without any hesitation. We are ready to help the MSMEs. The level of indigenisation is not very satisfactory in defence. The offset is also not moving on the designed line. We are now trying to create a data of capable Indian industries," Kumar said.

US leading participant

The United States is a leading participant with 64 companies, while France comes second with 58 companies, followed by UK (48), Russia (41), Israel (25), Germany (17) among others. There are 33 countries participating at this edition of the show compared to 29 in 2013. MoD says China will not be participating this time.

Besides 54 ministerial and other high-level delegations from several countries that are slated to attend the inaugural event, the exhibition will also see participation by over 600 companies, including 295 Indian and 328 foreign companies.

US Special Forces makes an entry

The number of aircraft participating in static and air displays is tentatively 72, but the officials say that this could breach the century mark in the next one week. In addition to the popular Sarang aerobatic team from the Indian Air Force, air display teams from the Scandinavian Air Show Team (Sweden), Aero Superbatics Limited and Airborne Service Limited (both from UK), Flying Bulls Aerobatic Team (Czech Republic) and the Open Sky Jump Team (US Special Forces) are ready to adorn the star status during the show. The Russian Knights aerobatic team, which was a major hit during Aero India 2013, will be missing in action this time.

The Indian flying team will have LCH, Tejas, Dhruv, Rudra, Sukhoi and Tiger Moth. Among the foreign military aircraft that will be seen at the air show include F-15C Eagle, Lockheed F-16C, Boeing KC-135, Boeing C-17, Rafale and Embraer EMB-145I. The foreign civil aircraft participation includes PC-12 NG, Falcon 2000, Phenom 100E, Boeing B 75, Boeing A 75, Viking, Catwalk, WASP, RRJ 95, EMB 505, Bell 407 GX Helicopter, King Air 350 ER, 19-seater Turbo Prop AI Industry, Z Lin Z 50 LX, OmaSud Sky Car, Falcon 7 X and Dornier 228-New Gen.

24x7 ticket counter at KIAL

According to Mayaskar Deo Singh, Director, DEO, a 24x7 ticket counter has been opened at the Kempegowda International Airport. "Tickets can be purchased only via online and there's no option for cash payment. Ticket sale windows are already open at all Axis Bank branches. Parents are advised not to bring toddlers and young children. With the military jets spitting ear-splitting noise, it will be even unsafe for pregnant women to attend the show," says Singh.

He wanted the general public to strictly public to strictly follow the sign boards to avoid traffic congestion.
MoD spokesperson Sitanshu Kar said that the media registration for this year's show has crossed all previous records.

Is the largest air show in India the last in Bengaluru?

Quiet discussions among top officials of the defence ministry, including those in the Defence Exhibition Organisation are pointing to something that Bengalureans could be disturbed by: The February 18-scheduled five-day Aero India 2015 could be the last, albeit the largest, Aero India the city will host. But if anything is to be blamed for this, if it happens, it is the rapid growth of the city and the constraints at Air Force Station Yelahanka (AFSY).

Secretary for defence production, G Mohan Kumar, committed neither in the affirmative nor in the negative when asked whether this was true. He chose to quietly say: "The IAF base at Yelahanka has constraints. There is a problem of high-rise buildings too. We are not able to land larger aircraft if we planned to bring them."

Increasing the length of the AFSY runway has been a longstanding issue because the western and eastern sides of the runway are restricted by railway tracks and the Bellary Road, respectively.

Going by the fact that AFSY is already bursting at its seams when Aero India takes place, officials seem to have run out of alternatives to accommodate a larger edition of the event.

Aero India 2015 is so far the largest air show in India. Defence officials admit that every time the air show - held once in two years - is organised it has surpassed its previous edition in size and activities. There are more countries participating, with more aircraft and more delegates, besides larger public participation on the last two public days.
Sources in the defence here said the IAF had in the past tried to negotiate with the Indian Railways to shift the railway tracks further to accommodate an extended runway so that larger and heavier aircraft could land at the air base. But those discussions did not yield fruit.

The issue had even led to the Rail India Technical and Economic Services (RITES) suggesting that IAF could design and build a runway that went over the railway tracks before Aero India 2005. But the idea of a "bridge runway" above the railway tracks did not convince the IAF top brass.

On the eastern side, the Bellary Road is a national highway, shifting of which could well choke Bengaluru as it's an arterial route that provides access to Kempe-gowda International Airport.

Mohan Kumar, however, said "Serious discussions on this [shifting the air show venue] have not taken place as yet."
Officially, no alternate venue has been decided, but there are indications that it could be Goa, home of the state of defence minister Manohar Parrikar.

The state has throughout the year shown its capability to handle large number of tourists, so a surge in tourists visiting an air show would not make much difference for the state, which has been a tourist attraction among foreigners and Indians alike.

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) the largest domestic participant at Aero India, and which has a large presence in Bengaluru, too, said such a shift would not affect its businesses.

A senior HAL official, speaking to Bangalore Mirror on condition of anonymity, said, "We have facilities across the country, therefore the air show shifting somewhere else would not affect HAL."
