Pretty narrow view about Indian cinema, I am afraid. Every year thousands of movies are made in hundreds of languages apart from Bollywood. This cultural barrier and this horrible misconception about each other should end somehow, otherwise we all will continue to sound like idiots on International forums.

Perhaps there's some misconception about Indian movies and there are indeed ones without the over exaggerating singing and dancing parts but i'm not gonna spend time taking that kind of risk watching Indian movies in hope not to encounter them. When i say the majority of Chinese people don't watch Indian movies or have never watched even one, most Indians here go ape sh!t and starts talking down Chinese cinema as you can see here that's the kind of idiots you find here on this forum. What is wrong accepting this simple fact? If there's now a small fan base in China who happens to like Indian movies well that's not a bad thing, everybody has different taste.

Even I am a fan of Ip man Donnie Yen. Classical Chinese Japanese confrontation. Because of Hollywood adoption of martial arts, some Chinese movies are breaking the box office expectations. Chinese movies have to move away from martial arts to become relevant.

Indian movies are meant for Indian sentiments and will not be widely accepted because of cultural overtones and over dramatization. Once in a while movies like Three Idiots, Dangal come along and become international sensations. Because of your quota system these foreign movies have to compete with Hollywood movies to be allowed in your country. So, don't expect any invasion of Bollywood in your country any time soon.

Since your movie industry has matured over the years, do you think this quota system is still relevant.

Don't ask me about the quota system, i don't hold any opinion regarding that policy. And i totally agree with you that Indian movies have exaggerated drama in singing/dancing. No offense but not everyone can tolerate this kind of theme. If the majority of the people on this planet really are into that kind of thing it would have conquered the world by now. But here you find idiots who can't accept this simple critic and starts bashing Chinese movies or joking about Jacky Chan . If i ask random people whether they have ever tried watching an Indian movie most would answer NO. Chinese movies? Yup.

I'm impressed you like Ip Man and even a fan of Donnie Yen. This my Indian friend is called taste. Chinese movies are more than Kung Fu theme, like i said we have excellent actors/actresses performing in different kind of movies who have won awards. You should try watch some Tony Leung's movies or some oldies from Donnie Yen. His 90's action movies are quite good, not just Ip Man.

Well distaste maybe but it's not all about that. It's more like i don't spend time exploring foreign movies. I can safely assume you too don't watch all kinds of foreign movies so does that mean you think they bad? Of course not but many Indians here don't want to hold the mirror and start thinking we are bad mouthing Indian movies. I (and i assume you too) have never watched any Turkish, African, Mongolian, Romanian, Bulgarian, Brazilian, Thai etc.. movies so do these nationals feel insecure and start criticizing Chinese movies? I don't watch too many movies nowadays, only selective ones either Chinese or some from Hollywood. It's nonsense to think i'm bashing Bollywood but there are idiots here who starts making racist remarks , anyway i welcome the success of some Indian movies and gaining some fan base abroad.

China is predominantly Confucian, plus Taoism. Buddha was accepted as it preaches non violent and equality, Hindu practice caste system. You sure love to brag like a certain banned member.

The true story of two female wrestlers overturning gender stereotypes has become the highest-grossing Indian film ever in China. It's got people asking when China will make a film like this?

It is a story of female empowerment
Dangal is not your typical song-and-dance heavy Bollywood romance.

Starring hugely popular Aamir Khan, it tells the story of Indian wrestler and coach Mahavir Singh Phogat who trained his daughters to become wrestlers - defying social norms.

The real-life family is from conservative Haryana state, known for the high prevalence of social issues such as gender inequality and child marriage. And the family faced great adversity to realise his wrestling dreams.

One of his daughters Geeta Phogat went on to win India's first ever gold medal in wrestling at the Commonwealth Games in 2010 and became the first Indian female wrestler to qualify for the Olympic Games.

"I think the father really cared about his daughters' future. He would have raised independent daughters no matter what," said one social media user on Chinese micro-blogging site Weibo.

"Just left the cinema. All I want to say is, after the movie's finished, the whole room applauded. Quite an experience," said another user.

Although some took away an anti-feminist message from the film.

"I think this is a rather male chauvinistic film. Basically, the dad forced his dream on his two daughters. He didn't teach them to wrestle so that they could avoid being child brides. He taught them to wrestle so he could realise his dream. The girls never had a chance to choose," said one Weibo user.

China loves Aamir Khan
Since its release on 5 May in China, the film has already made more than 487m yuan ($70.7m; £54.5m) at the box office, according to state news agency Xinhua and continues to do strong business.

It now looks poised to unseat Japan's Your Name as the highest grossing non-Hollywood film ever in China, which commentators say points to China's growing fascination with Bollywood.

In China, the film was released as Shuai Jiao Baba, which translates as Let's Wrestle, Dad. Since then the hashtag #LetsWrestleDad has been trending on Weibo.

Aamir Khan's previous films have also been hugely popular in China. His 2009 release, 3 Idiots, was a hit in the country and industry watchers called it the film that broke "China's Great Bollywood Wall".

Khan is sometimes credited with reviving China's love for Bollywood, which began with Raj Kapoor's films in the 1950s.

"It made me cry and laugh. I'm a big fan of Aamir Khan. He never lets me down," said one netizen on Weibo.

Chinese critics say Dangal has helped break China's "prejudice" against Bollywood films, including their excessive length and elaborate but "puzzling" dance scenes.

Prominent Chinese director Feng Xiaogang who watched the movie described his experience watching it with friends.

"I went to the movies along with some 20 friends last night. When the movie finished and they started showing the credits, seven to eight of them rushed to the toilet - turned out they had been holding off going to the bathroom. We went for tea afterwards and all of us said: good movie!"

Finally, a decent sports movie
And many social media users and critics are inevitably comparing Dangal to Chinese films, saying it was better than a lot of domestic cinema.

Yin Hong, a professor from the Tsinghua University and a film critic, told the Beijing Evening News that Dangal puts Chinese movies "to shame".

"Dangal was based on a true story, but its artistic level - from the script-writing to the actors' and actresses' performance, and from the pace to the musical score - is amazing."

He said it had "taught Chinese cinema a lesson".

"We have so many champions in China but we have failed to make a decent sports movie. This is a case worthy of reflection," he said.

"It could totally have been a Chinese story. but how come we don't have a movie like this?" asked one Weibo user.

Film critic Nan Jiang told the BBC she thinks it's because the Chinese film market is dominated by commercial interests.

"Film makers are concerned with money. They barely care about feminism or female empowerment," she said.

So what does India make of all this success for Dangal in China?

Lots of pride, a little disbelief and several cries of "madness".

After becoming Bollywood’s highest-grossing film at the domestic market, Aamir Khan’s Dangal has achieved one more milestone at the Chinese box office.


Dangal has crossed the 500 crore mark in China. This is the latest record set by Aamir in terms of making it to the 500 crore club. Also, it is the first time a Bollywood film has scored 500 crores in China, it is certainly a huge achievement.

The film raked in 3.73 Million (24.20 crores) yesterday and now stands with the grand total of 507.34 crores.

Aamir is among the most popular Indian actors for the Chinese who also are fans of South Koreans artistes.

Nitesh Tiwari, who helmed the blockbuster “Dangal“, is working on a screen adaptation of Varun Agarwal’s 2012 bestseller “How I Braved Anu Aunty & Co-Founded a Million Dollar Company”.

The film will be jointly produced by Ronnie Screwvala and Siddharth Roy Kapur under their banners RSVP and Roy Kapur Films respectively.

Spokesperson of Roy Kapur Films said in a statement: “We are excited to be collaborating with Nitesh on adapting Varun’s incredibly relevant and hilarious book to the screen.”

On the work front, Aamir Khan will be next seen in Secret Superstar, where he’ll portray the character of a music composer. The film will be directed by Advait Chandan and produced by Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao. Secret Superstar stars Zaira Wasim and Meher Vij in key roles, Aamir will just be playing a cameo. The movie will hit the screen during the Diwali weekend. The film is all set to clash with Ajay Devgn starrer Golmaal Again .

Post this, Aamir Khan will share the screen with Amitabh Bachchan for the first time in Thugs Of Hindostan. The film will go on floors from 1st June and will be directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya, who previously helmed Tashan and Dhoom 3. It will be produced under the reputed banner of Yash Raj Films and will release in Diwali, 2018.

Japanese TV series and movies had good market share until they pissed Chinese off politically. Then Korean TV/movies moved in until recently when they suffered a setback for you know what.

We have discovered China as a profitable market, more and more Indians film will now line up for release in China. I just wish China removes the restriction on number of foreign movies that can be released. I am sure after the big hit of Dangal in China, Indian govt will lobby to remove such restriction (or at leaset increases the number)

Hollywood discovered that before you guys. Actually, to my own surprise, in China, movie streaming websites have more and more Indian movies lately. I think Chinese also discovered that Indian movies can be very entertaining, too.

Media restriction is mostly political and designed for curtailing western influence, not so much towards other countries like India.
