A New Way to Measure Poverty in India

The World bank figures which you see are measured at same base for each country.

That i know . They measure it by thr own standard.. i understand that.

The world bank standard is $1.25 PPP based off (2005) prices. So it's not just an arbitrary number but an approximate guide line.

In 2012, china defined their rural poverty line as 6.3 RMB per person a day. About 1.05 dollars, but this translated into $1.8 in purchasing power in rural area.

Well in case of India 50 cent is about $1.5 in ppp terms.

These r wb data. Article not says bangladesh follow same standard.Dude as jarves said eriler WB standard are same for every county. $1.25 ppp =extremely poor. $2ppp = poor. The percentage u see on wb website for india is by the wb standard not by goi standards.

we do not have any other standard

Can u tell us what is the standard set by bd?

What is number which pakitan gov. Uses?

Please, lets not drag our neighbors into this. When our politicians says that Rs 5 is enough for a meal in Delhi, and Farooq Abdullah even dragged it down to Re 1, we're just making fun of the under privileged class.

The numbers are good if you just look at it, and give yourself a mental solace. Growing up in a poor/lower middle class family, it seems like a joke.

Dude u really take the words of indian politicians serious? Hv ur own mind plz. I was not dragging anyone but just wanted to show them mirror. . By the way indian standard is 32 rupees . If i calculate it in ppp is about 90 rupees or $1.5 not sounds that bad is it? These are alMost near the international standard. Plus not forget the subsidy they will get in food grain's.

Growing up our family of 5 lived in 1 room measuring 10 x 15 sq ft on rent. This is pretty much the same story for the entire nation barring the top 5-10%. So let us not make it a story exclusive to some.

That being said India is not as poor as is being made out. Rs. 32 per person per day makes it Rs. 960 for month. For a family of 5 is Rs. 4800 per month. Now 80% of India own their own houses and have some agricultural land. So that is free housing. Most of them grow their own food too. In the cities, both husband and wife works, together they make at least 10-12 k.

No one in India gives the real figure of their income least they disqualify for some or other govt benefits.

its sad.............instead of reducing poverty they are reducing the number of poors
