What's new

A Girl who challenged India water problem.....

its surely will wear off...
because of friction...but that is true for every thing....on earth..be it Tyre..machine pats, your key board.....
but because it will wear off we should not sit effortless.....
btw you can see the grooves on the cylinder in 1st image ...so the the drum roll on it and educes friction and hence wear off....

That is the whole point. People do not spend money and resources mending these contraptions in rural area. What fixes and maintenance are needed for pots carried on the head? People do that in the first place because it is cheap and efficient. If they wanted to invest in a water carrying device, there there are cycles everywhere on which cans are hung and gotten home in double swift time.

See this....it solves that issue too
"the WaterWheel is made from high-quality plastic that can withstand rough terrain. " :)
It will survive for sometime. And i am sure soon we'll find more such products in the market now.And those might be more durable ones.

The wheel may well last for eternity, will the handle last?

Well it looks metallic to me.And if the bars go through and through the wheels then theres hardly a chance those'll get damaged.
My point is once such a product is launched many other companies will come up with similar products. And may be even better design.
Atleast now we have an idea of what might work.
I am optimistic about this one. :)

lol..and you think..ladies in rural area love to carry these pots on their head daily and travel for 5-10 KM daily.....
Its not like that..let the thing come in the market and let it get absorbed in that society..people will definitely cherish it....
there was no need of mobile once in india ..now see even in the farthest location we can find it with very meager income people..
yes cycle are there but how many woman drive cycle to carry water....have you seen any.....
how many men with cycle help woman to fetch water ....

The wheel may well last for eternity, will the handle last?
some time you need to cherish some ideas rather then criticize it.......
and why not the handles will last....if you are talking about the jerks on road then there can be enough mechanical adjustment and dampers can be used along with ball-bearings ..so that hand holding it feels the least of jerk and handles remains safe.....

Such ideas are floated everyday. Seen umpteen kitchen appliances comes up like that which fall by the wayside. As a teenager who actually had the duty of filling all the water drums from the tap which was outside the house, I have experience in carrying water pots on my hips. It is nothing much when you are doing it as routine, you don't even feel the weight. Likewise the women who balance it on the head, most probably do not even notice it. It is an art. That is why you never see them droop. They are ramrod straight. If they are rolling it over 5-10 km as you say, then it is just the same and a strain on the arms anyways.

If it goes through the wheels, then yeah, but most of these things do not do so. There is no lack of innovation in India. People keep coming up with brilliant ideas all the time.

lol....what ever you say...but when human gets a easier way to do it..they go for that...
just like previously people used to walk on foot for miles ..but now they have different modes of travelling and they use it...
its no justification that because yesterday I used to carry pots on hips so, in future also I continue to do same....
in fact now you don't do it....you have moved to better life style...suited to your need...because you can have it...
the same is true for these water carriers......when these ladies will get a chance they will definitely go for that...

Hmm this is not an argument against innovation. It is just that I do not think this idea is long lasting or even popular. You may disagree.

I have collected this data from different source .not from any newspaper or magazine....so,.there may be some error....but I like this news so...sharing with you all....

When Cynthia Koenig, a young social entrepreneur from New York, learned that millions of girls and women around the world spend hours each day collecting water from distant sources, she decided to create a new way to help people in poor communities transport water and it's called the WaterWheel. Koenig's WaterWheel allows people to roll water in a 50-liter container versus carrying it in 5 gallon (19 liter) jugs. Koenig estimates that the WaterWheel can save women 35 hours per week in water transport time, as well as prevent the physical strain that comes from balancing 40 pounds of water on top of their heads for hours each day.

Every day around the world, over 200 million hours are spent each day fetching water, often from water sources miles from home, and this task usually falls to women and girls. By freeing up valuable time, the WaterWheel allows women to spend time on income-generating activities that can help pull her family out of poverty. The time savings also means that there is a greater likelihood that girls will be allowed to stay in school, further reducing the rate of intergenerational poverty.

After receiving a $100,000 Grand Challenges Canada prize to develop the WaterWheel, Koenig founded a social enterprise company, Wello. The company is in an early stage of development and has been piloting the WaterWheel in rural communities in India. Koenig also plans on continuing to make the WaterWheel itself more useful by adding in filtration, drip irrigation kits, even a cell phone charger that uses the rotation of the wheel to charge the battery of the cell phone and give people more access to essentials like communication and education.

Good idea. Soon we will see these contraptions build in Indian villages with jugaad and much cheaper than $25.

.
Brilliant idea and it can be executed in parts of Rajasthan , Harayana , Gujrat where water scarcity is high . However it would take a honest and visionary leader to applaud and implement such ideas for free .
Hmmm.....I wish I was a CM of any state :omghaha:

.
It is a nice, not really innovative concept, what is wrong with:

There are a gazillion options already available. A hand cart, which is cheap and sturdy, can be used for multiple purposes apart from carrying water.

They are just dazzled that a foreigner saw the plight of our village women and came up with an idea to help them out. They even want the govt to buy these in bulk and supply to the villagers. Big business for a model which is yet to prove itself popular or even necessary.

@Dem!god

Excellent thread and the news is such a refreshing one that it can't be expressed in words. The first thing came to my mind that why no patriotic Indian thought about this simple, effortless but effective to the maximum method. But I am equally disappointed by some surprising arguments presented here.Is it really necessary to see west vs India in everything? I guess not. This thread is not about the glee and exuberence to see foreigner helping the condemned poor Indians. This is all about an effort to relieve the women from the daunting task of carrying such a heavy load under the scorching heat of West India. I highly doubt if there was any sense of profit making business was working in the culprit westerners mind who unlikely would see a first class business opportunity in one of the poorest provinces of India. lets reinvent some common sense and keep our blind prejudices to go off a holiday for few days so that we all can enjoy such exhilarating news to it's full extent.

Even if this idea was brought forward by an Indian I would have supported this idea.
I dont understand why ppl always luv critising an idea rather than appreciating its innovativeness.
Fine this might not be Koenig's idea...but still she brought it forward and made it famous. The idea is good and now its to our government to utilise it.
And why should one just trash an idea ??and why should it be nipped in the bud???
Is there anything which proves it wont work???
I dont undestand the sabre rattling.
Its an innovative idea and I dont care who came up with this idea..this womand gets the support of many.
