Amra Babic, the newly elected mayor of the Bosnian town of Visoko, is the first mayor to wear hijab.
“This is a model for Europe but even beyond, for the East and the West which meet here in Bosnia,” said Amra Babic, who is a member of Bosnia’s main Muslim Party of Democratic Action (SDA), on Tuesday.

The 43-year-old won 30 percent of the votes in the October 7 local elections in Visoko, a town of some 40,000 inhabitants near the capital city of Sarajevo.

“Islam is very clear regarding the woman. It reserves for her a place in the public life and all those who interpret it correct know that this is the way it is,” she stated.

A mother of three and an economist, Babic added, “I believe that my headscarf should not be a hindrance… Europe will understand that it has to do with people who respect their own identity, but who are tolerant enough to respect the rights of others.”
Muslims are the biggest religious group in Bosnia and make up about 40 percent of the country’s population of 3.8 million.

The hijab was banned under Communism when Bosnia was part of the federal Yugoslavia from 1945 until the early 1990s.

It would be good if that Norweigian culture minister also wears one.

Why am I getting 'islamic marriage' and 'meet muslim singles/ muslima.com' ads with hijab girls, I never searched anything like that. I thought site ads are dependent on search cache?

I get Chinese dating site!

Bosnia is a shit hole. But because a lot of the men work around Europe, somehow they all drive a Mercedes. It's like a caricature nowadays around where i live and elsewhere, a car from the big 3 German luxury car makers and Balkan music roaring out. And inside some guy with lots of gold around his neck, hand out the side window holding a cigarette....funny as hell

I see Albanians doing the same here where i live.

Bosnia is a shit hole.
Bosnia, like most Eastern European countries has suffered a lot under communism/marxist rule, which is why these places are ridden with crime and the women of these countries are trafficked.

They didnt suffer under communism. It wasnt the same thing as in Romania, Russia, and E. Germany. There was no omni present secret service. There was a thing named UDBA but it was nothing in comparison to KGB, Stasi or Securitate.
Former Yugoslavia had US weapons and was invited to NATO in the 50's. Then Stalin died and Tito got cozy with the new Russian leadership on the common grounds of communism.

They suffered in the war.

but to say it's a "shyt hole" is pretty harsh. The pictures my uncle showed me showed a lot of greenery, small but elegant single level houses and some of the most beautiful people

Tito was a commie, it just doesn't fit having a Commie state in NATO, or does it?

Secondly, compared to Western Europe, and like all former Communist/Eastern bloc states, Yugoslavia (who Bosnia was formerly a part of) was underdeveloped.

Yugoslavia was much better off then your average Warsaw pact member. To say people were suffering during communism era is an insult to those really suffering.
And yes it would fit in NATO, it was meant to be the bridge that would connect Italy and Greece (both NATO members) and make the southern flank stronger.
btw, when Tito refused to bow down to Stalin's demands of the USSR having control over Yugoslavia like they had in other eastern block countries, people were preparing for Soviet invasion. From here come the US weapons, NATO invite which Tito sadly turned down.
Compared to the western countries everyone was underdeveloped. :S

shit hole as a functional state. Its like one of the countries from your end of the world, corruption, inefficiency, noone gives a damn, tensions between people still etc...

But because everything is cheap and people work for good wages (comparative to their standard) they get through somehow.
