Taliban claim killing 75 soliders

PESHAWAR, Pakistan, May 31 (UPI) -- As the U.S. intervention in Afghanistan enters its second decade, the Taliban are claiming successes against collation forces.

Qari Yusof Ahmadi, a Taliban spokesman, informed the media that a number of Taliban were continuing resistance in Heart, with Taliban fighters killing 75 foreign and Afghan soldiers and injuring 34 others, the Afghan Islamic Press reported Tuesday.

A spokesman for Herat Hospital, who didn't want to be identified, said that number of deaths in Monday's incident in Herat was seven dead and 49 injured.

The Taliban claimed the attack on the Provincial Reconstruction Team was part of Taliban's "Badr" operations which began May 1.

Herat, near Afghanistan's border with Iran, had been relatively quiet.

Coalition military forces officials reported that during the Herat attack several insurgents attacked the PRT headquarters with a vehicle-borne bomb and small-arms fire. Afghan and coalition forces returned fire, killing several insurgents, but while several coalition service members were wounded during the attack, there were no deaths.

As of Tuesday, at least 1,598 members of the U.S. military have died in Afghanistan since the war began a decade ago.
