700 militants surrender in Assam

Heres hoping the government is able to make good on its promises and bring development and jobs to the NE.

If they don't the insurgency will rise again.

Nail- head. This is the key point here to move forward, otherwise this nice ceremony will mean nought.

But GoI aren't idiots I'm sure they will make good on their promise as long as the bureaucrats don't get involved.

As somebody said ..Economic improvement is the one shot solution to all woes.

Its a pity that we spent the first 40 years chasing the socialistic dream that nearly converted our nation to a basket case.

Don't blame all the bureaucrats. Personaly I think the greatest ego maniacal beings in India are the babus of Finance Ministry who somehow wants to interfere in every other project.

Whatever you will say about PM MMS and his diplomacy over bullets approach, it certainly seems to be producing results both in J&K and the Valley. As an economist he appreciates that many of these issues can be sorted out through development.
I wouldn't completely agree with u on this... but wont derail this thread. Personally I prefer roses over the guns but does the other side ready to do that?

Agreed..it had not worked with Maoists as they have a very lucrative way of funding their operation through extortion of mining companies.

That's got to be the biggest one-time surrender of insurgents ever.

With NE issue easily getting solved the Maoist issue needs to be given top priority.

No, you are right the FM is/has been responsible for some truly mind-boggling foolish decisions. Not to mention ego-maniacal politicians stirring things up with ignorant masses halting development of key programs throughout the country.

I have some (albeit) hope in the future with the younger/middle class generation of leaders who are different and have finally had enough.

Militancy in kashmir and northeast are now to all time low,

so chidambaram can now concentrate on moaists, i heard some maoist leader is arrested in orrisa yesterday????/

Kaiminthang Thanggew (2nd L), president of Kuki Liberation Army (KLA), an armed group demanding self-rule in North-Cachar Hill district of Assam, wearing a traditional turban, sits with his colleagues during the arms laying down ceremony at Guwahati in the northeastern Indian state of Assam January 24, 2012. Hundreds of separatists in India's northeast handed over automatic rifles and other weapons to the home minister and senior paramilitary and army officers on Tuesday, signalling the government remains open to peace talks in the region.
