50 years of Independence: Once basket case, Bangladesh now marches ahead of Pakistan

Who said the war was only 13 days. That 13 day success was 8 months of mobilization in the making, which included training and arming millions of mukti bahini soldiers.

You think it was 'only' 13 days to mobilize one million troops, thousands of tanks, 100s of aircraft and warships including aircraft carriers for a war effort?

'Most of the work was done by mukti bahini fighters'. If India had not put it's massive military machine behind the effort your mukti fighters would have fought for decades as a low level insurgency?

Do not forget that when India moved against Pakistan, the US sent it's 7th fleet. India decided to go ahead despite such pressure. Within one year not only was the entire war finished but India ensured that Bangladesh was recognized by the UN as an independent country. You think your militia forces could have achieved all this so quickly?

First India did not mobilize all troops to Bangladesh front but mostly to Pakistan front. India had it’s strategic interest to do so that is why they engaged into the war indirectly except in the last -3 days when Pakistan launched aerial attack.

US said lots of thing so is China but none did anything militarily. Yes it would take little longer but not decades as you claimed. It would be impossible for Pakistan 1300 miles away to control 75 million hostile population as it would not be economically feasible. Sooner or later Pakistan would have to withdraw. For example even Soviet Union collapsed fighting an unnecessary war for a decade in Afghanistan. Pakistan was no where near to what USSR was at that time.

.
The stupidity here is endless ! Since when Pakistan became standard for Bangladesh as if we have surpassed Singapore or something ! Many people still struggle to eat meals daily . Many still living below the poverty line. All these stats are eye wash and paper tiger. To see the actual development you need to look at the people, their living standards. We don’t want another Mumbai like situation where a 60 storey building next to worlds largest slum. The corruption is endless. If you can’t stop corruption, you don’t achieve much. Bangladesh would’ve been in a much better place if the corruption was even 25% less.

you can tell yourselves these things by trying to look tall by standing on our shoulders.

It's a pity that we cannot talk about the economic achievements of BD without getting into a virtual fistfight.

BaNgLaDeSh StRoNk - PaKiStAn BaD?

1. Different power dynamics are at play in Pakistan. Literally every power of this world wants influence in our country. Pakistan needs to get its act together, that's for sure and we are wasting a lot of potential right now. But we have other variables to consider than Bangladesh.

2. Bangladesh - and please forgive me my words - is basically a Hindu protectorate. The 29th state of India to say. Proud Muslims are dominated by Hindus, created by Hindus and protected by Hindus. Every Bangaldeshi with some pride in his Muslim heritage (and I know there are many Bangladeshi brothers and sisters who hate this fact!) is upset about that.

3. Dignity is more important than bragging about the fact that Bangladeshi paupers have 20 USD more per year in their pockets than Pakistani or Indian paupers. And right now the discussion is literally based on that said fact. 99% of your country would still leave on the same day when an Euro embassy would grant them a visa.

4. @DalalErMaNodi

You may bring up a polio vaccine to brag about Bangladeshs StronKness. As I said different power dynamics are at play in Pakistan and if I lived in Pakistan I would also be sceptical. Ever heard about Shakil Afridi? Your country chose to become a puppet state for a weak peace with India, Pakistan - with all its major problems - has some dignitiy left not to submit to the Hindus.

Rich. This is coming from a country that rans errands for Uncle Sam during the Cold war and is running errands for the CCP today. Throw in a lot of kissing to Saudi and Arab royal families.

Bangladesh’s dependency on foreign aid has reduced remarkably from 88% in 1972 to just over 2 percent in 2010

What stood out to me was this particular line. Extremely well done to the common, hardworking Bangladeshis. Very proud of this. :)

BD should stick to economic focus. Middle income status is within striking range. Don't take it for granted that you will remain focussed. All too often people fall by the wayside.

.
Let us be honest BD was ALWAYS going to beat both Pakistan and India economically as it is a unitary state, whereas the other two are a hotchpotch of different ethnicities cobbled together after the UK left the subcontinent in 1947.

BD growth at an average of 6.5% from 2020-2035 is more than likely underestimated as always and we are more likely to see nearer 8% and so BD could get to 20th largest economy in the world by 2035 - around the size of Turkey then which would mean that it would become a lower middle income country then. Not bad for a country that started with pretty much zero in 1971.
