COIMBATORE: Five tonnes of ammonium nitrate were seized and a truck
driver was arrested by the Walayar police early Sunday morning. Police
claimed that the truck was laden with 100 bags, each containing 50kg of
ammonium nitrate used for making explosives. The explosive material is
generally used in stone quarries.
The truck driver was identified as Abdul Karim, 40, from Ponnani in
Malappuram district. Around 5am on Sunday, a squad from the sales tax
department stopped a truck while checking vehicles at the Walayar
checkpost. On inspection, the squad found five tones of ammonium nitrate
in the truck. On interrogation, Abdul Karim told the squad that he was
taking the consignment from Olapathy in Kerala.
"The driver was instructed to handover the consignment to a person in
Palakkad. We are conducting a detail probe," said S Sasidharan, deputy
superintendent of police (special branch), Palakkad district.
The consignment was transported without any proper documents.
According to police sources, the truck driver had already smuggled two
consignments of ammonium nitrate without any proper documents. Police
are probing on whose instruction Abdul Karim had carried the consignment
and to whom he was supposed to hand them over.
The Walayar police have registered a case against Abdul Karim under
various sections of Explosive Act and he has been lodged in Palakkad sub-
jail.
In the wake of Hyderabad twin bomb blasts, the Kerala and Tamil Nadu
police have stepped up vehicle checks in border areas. All the checkposts
in the border areas were alerted. The seizure of ammonium nitrate created
panic among the public in Kerala and police officials.
"After the seizure, the police have tightened the security and vehicles are
being checked thoroughly," Sasidharan added.
When contacted, E S Uma, superintendent of police, Coimbatore district,
said a team of police has gone to Walayar to investigate about the seizure.
"All the checkposts in the border area were alerted in Coimbatore and
instructed to conduct thorough vehicle check round the clock," Uma said.

ammonium nitrate in firecrackers?
Who are you fooling?
Firecrackers use gun powder.

That was meant for Blast, and perticularly when the shipment was for Malapuram - a mini Pakistan in Kerala.

One important point is that there were no proper documents along with consignment and that itself raises many doubts. In any case the material was to be used for illegal activities and in these sensitive times, a little vigilance doesn't harm anybody.

They are also used in certain fireworks.Any nitrate can be used as an oxidizer in gunpowder, commonly used one is pottassium nitarte.Often various nitrates are mixed to provide attractive colours in fireworks displays.
You people are nothing but delusional. There are no such thing called mini Pakistan,Don't come up with such idiotic terms.

AN is a precursor to a fertilizer bomb.

good news. investigation should be done now.

To be frank Kerala in sitting in a volcano for some time.. Some people are actively involved in the anti national activities specially in Malapuram area.. Most of the people are coming back from Gulf and some of them are actively involved in making India too a land of pure.. Not too long ago, 5 people from Kerala got killed by security forces in Kashmir after coming back from their training in one of our neighbouring countries.. Investigation led to an arrest of a guy named Nazir, who was recruiting people for Jehad against India.. There were incidents of Ayyappa devotees got attacked by people and a teacher's hand was amputated by people.. In the surface area everything is clam but under there are lot of tensions going on.. Kerala was not a state as it used to be.. As Muse mentioned in one another post, We should be ready for the purification process which is going on in our neighbouring country
