@Abingdonboy : I will like IN to have atleast two regiments of Amphibious Assault Units each comprising of around 10k-12k soldiers. And they should have capability to capture any enemy port/city without any support from any other arms of Indian Armed Forces.

Each assault units should be spearheaded by at least 100 small landing ships (as shown in below image) with around 20 soldiers each and each landing ship should be equipped with a Mark 38 25 mm machine gun (As shown in the hands of IN guard below). A unit of Marcos accompanying them will be icing on the cake.

Rest of the soldiers should be carried on large landing ships. There should be atleast 100 T90/T72 tanks accompanying them as well as atleast 2 batteries of Pinaka, all of them loaded on other smaller landing ships.

That goes back to my post in reply to Abingdon where I mentioned that the 91st Infantry (Sikh L.I) is slated for amphibious landings. The above pictures are what I was talking about. And yes, the ARMY wants control of the amphibious force with support from the Navy. I have read into this many a times so talk about the NAVY having control over the Marines/Amphi.force is debatable.

Currently in IA, a independent infantry brigade consisting of Rajputana Rifle is working as dedicated naval force. IA kept battalion size force for particular naval infantry for few decade. And now they increase it upto the brigade size, may be in near future we may see a naval infantry division of IA (like RAPID & mountain division) with the help of IN. But now it is all about gaining experience and tactics.

I meant M4 as carbine,As indian forces already use it.Same for tavor.Compact and light is good for amphibious ops,though assault rifle for longer ranged infantry firepower.
But yeah standradize on one weapon,then use other as accesories for needed missions.

As main work of naval infantry is to assault the shores of the enemy which would be heavily guarded, so firepower kept more importance than move-ability, so I would assault rifle than carbine variant as UNMC also prefer M16 rather than M4.

So the standard TAR-21 would fit the bill completely- excellent and proven (thanks to Indian SOFs) "over the beach" capability, many different variants that can be issued to members of the force depending on their role (designated marksmen-STAR, fire-support- GTAR, officer-CTAR).


Although I would still like to see the HK-416 in Indian service but given India's love affair with the Tavor it makes sense to go for this family of weapons.

@Abingdonboy and @Hephaestus : Nice thread sirs. The level of discussion has gone up since my last time here.

Few points from my side. Last I heard it was supposed to be placed under tri-service command ( I might be wrong as its been sometime and there might be few new developments ) which in my humble opinion is not a good thing. The wishlist in the last pages are very elaborate and I dont see that happening anytime soon. Having said that the Force will be truly capable of projecting POWER. Anyone who has ever been to A&N will swear to this. The developments going on there are very serious and too little is coming out in open.

regarding JLTV : India is not a prtner of this program currently. We had shown some interests during the initial days, but unless a platform is chosen, India will be probably watching the developments. Once a system is finalised, We may join the development as partners.

Noise cancellation and comms- this gunner will be directed by warfare officers elsewhere in the ship.

Bro, I'm aware that wishlist is almost entirely pie in the sky thinking and that the reality will be very different . You are right about A&N islands- from what I've heard the amount of work going on down there is immense but very hush-hush

As fad as I'm aware the LCS is not nesercarily anything do to with the USMC. Yes they're about expeditionary warfare capabilty for the USN but won't directly be supporting Marine operations.


I think Indian shipyards need to start building the capacity to build 40,000+ ton LHD/LPD above all else if we are talking about amphibious warfare.
