4th Combat Force akin to the USMC

A dedicated marine force is already on its way... but its highly unlikely that it will be independent (That it will become another arm of the Indian Armed FOrces)

Agreed, it will be under 100% IN control. I'm not sure right now whether this is a good thing or bad thing.

i was also a bit surprised when i heard that name but my friend told me that both of these names are currently in consideration but most probably the Navy will choose the latter one if they don't come up with another name.

I really hope they come up with something better. The SPB name is pretty cool because it mean Ocean defender or something (sorry idk for sure). Maybe another Hindi name? Or an English name that is better than "Indian Expeditionary force or "Indian Amphibious Force" these are so bland.

@Hephaestus :

There is no way that India (or any other country barring the US) can afford to have something akin to the USMC. You should have simply asked whether we should have dedicated marines, without bringing the USMC into the picture. Not many people realize this, but although the USMC is the smallest branch of the US armed forces, they are still bigger than most militaries on earth. For instance, the USMC is bigger than the entire british army. The combat power at their disposal is simply mind boggling - the have many medium sized carriers with hundreds of harriers (to be replaced by hundreds of F-35s) for themselves, they have more state of the art artillery than than the Indian army, and so on. By any parameter, the USMC is a more formidable force than most militaries on earth. They are a mini-military, sort of an army, navy and air force rolled into one.

Also, India will not, in the foreseeable future, require a force that does what the USMC does for USA. The USMC's "expeditionary groups" are usually the people who start off a war for their country. They do a combined arms attack on heavuily defended enemy shores, and pave the way for the other services to enter later. The marines love to say that they are the "First to go and last to leave". In their (USMC's) anthem/hymn, they take a dig at the other services thus:

"If the Army and the Navy,
Ever look on Heaven’s scenes;
They will find the streets are guarded,
By United States Marines."

India does not require a force along those lines, because we do not expect to wage expeditionary war in far off lands. Our potential threats are right next door. But India does need amphibious warfare capability, and that is being addressed presently, by the tri service command at Andaman and Nicobar islands. There is a lot of activity going on there since a few years, and it is speculated that they are raising an entire brigade of amphibious capable troops (in other words, marines).

We need marines to protect our island chains, and also for modest power projection. But it doesn't make sense to make them a separate service like the USA has, because there is no way that India can afford to arm such a service with organic aviation and transport assets, to make them an independent force. Besides, we do not need a corps sized amphibious expeditionary force. A brigade, or at most a division sized force is all we can or will have.

@Abingdonboy: I really think you are mistaken in saying that the SPB is slated to become India's marine infantry. That flies in the face of whatever I have gathered about India's future amphibious ambitions. From what I know, that will be a tri-service responsibility. And IMO, that makes more sense for a country like India, to have all three services contribute their part to an amphibious capability, than to have the navy have its own land warriors (which means acquiring tanks, IFVs, helicopters, airplanes, artillery and other assets, and training so many soldiers to use those). Of course I could be wrong, we all know for sure only what is available as open source info. But I would suggest that you talk again to the professionals you know, and verify that particular bit of info (about the SPB being the future naval infantry).

So in short, we have a navy who wanted to become an army and we have a army who wanted to be an airforce :cuckoo:

Bro I might be wrong on the name- it may not be the SPB but a separate force all together. However I am 100% sure the force will be IN infantry and all the assets (art, ICVs, vehicles, helos etc) will be the IN's from the IN's pocket. I know this for certain.

Yes it is a HUGE task for the IN to undertake but they are thinking long term- decades.

Guys, as there is very little concrete evidence to rely on right now wrt this force. Let's have some fun and discuss and speculate.

If I was to think about the make up of this force, then this force should be formed by taking existing combat brigades from the Army(so to speed up the formation) and putting them through a training course akin to MARCOS lite.
These forces are essentially based in small formations on the Carriers and near Naval bases.. their Air support is from the IN(and that is to be coordinated heavily).
Dedicated purchases for this force should be Amphibious IFV's, Landing craft(preferably some hovercraft- indigenous would be better) , and a dedicated Helo force that could either be major based on the Dhruv(acting like the UH-1Y's for the USMC) with a few CH-47's and ALH Gunships.
While this force should be deployable to the west its main focus should be the east and it should prepare for Island hopping scenario's; working with allies and other nations in that area to contain the dragon' reach into the fossil resources in those locale's.

I agree taking units from the IA would speed up the formation process especially as certain IA brigades already act in a amphibious assault role right now. But the I don't think this is an all too pressing need so the IN has time to set up their own force and this is the way they are going- the IA won't be playing any sort of role in this marine expeditionary force. Also the CH-47 would need to be certified as a naval helo right?

It is already certified for rough weather operations in Britain along the unforgiving north sea. MH-47G's regularly work with Navy Seals to deploy SF. The Royal Marines and Army rely on Chinooks based off their new LPDs as well. So no problem there. You basically need three or four per Battallion and these could be spread over two A/C carriers.
Another possibility is this force having the privilege to commandeer Indian Merchant vessels(as the Falklands war) for rear equipment and troop transportation.

I am aware of this sir it doesn't have electrically folding rotors as fair as I'm aware though right? What would the the advantages of the CH-47 over, say, the CH-53K?

Yes it doesnt, but it does have folding rotor capability which means that there is potential for addition for that capability.
The CH-53K is a great aircraft but suffers at higher altitude. Compared to it, the CH-47 is much more durable, better at handling multiple scenarios and does not suffer from the tail rotor loss deathblow.
Also, since India is already getting CH-47s.. commonality, commonality , commonality.

Well we have 5 5400 tonnes LST and 3 1100 tonnes assault ships as light platforms.To be supplemented with 5 new large 30000 tonne assault ships for which tender is ongoing and jalashwa.

For the helicopter s-70B seahawk.
Assault rifle-M4 carbines and tavors.Plus assault rifle tender winner.
Arty-Pinaka mk2 and m777.

M4 (why??) and Tavor AND AR tender winner?? No need for 3 different ARs in 1 force mate. Already creating a logisitcal headache for yourself before the force has even fired a round ;)

I meant M4 as carbine,As indian forces already use it.Same for tavor.Compact and light is good for amphibious ops,though assault rifle for longer ranged infantry firepower.
But yeah standradize on one weapon,then use other as accesories for needed missions.
