BANGALORE: Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) said on Saturday that 40 frontline fighter Sukhoi would be modified to integrate the air version of supersonic cruise missile BrahMos.

HAL chairman T S Raju said that Saturday's successful demonstration flight of Sukhoi with BrahMos missile in a 'Mass Dimensional' profile is a perfect example of Make in India.

"It's an engineering marvel in the aviation history of India. It proves that when all agencies come together with one mission, there is nothing impossible," says Raju.

HAL said its Nashik Division took up the challenge of creating all necessary data without any assistance from the Original Equipment Manufacturer - the Irkut Corporation.

"It is not the techno-economics of the project, but HAL's commitment to self-reliance which made HAL to sign the contract with BrahMos Aerospace in 2014 for modification of two Su30 MKI aircraft for integration of BrahMos missile," says Raju.

HAL handed over the first modified Sukhoi to the Indian Air Force during Aero India 2015. Earlier HAL officials had earlier told OneIndia that the integrating the missile was a challenging task for Nasik. Division, owing to the limited design data of Su-30 MkI available with them.

The home-grown launcher designed and developed by BrahMos Aerospace Thiruvananthapuram Limited was used during today's mission.

Initially 40 will be modified

But Later on IAF will love it so much they will ASK for MORE

Structural changes add weight which in turn affects performance. And we don't need more than 40 because we will soon get the Brahmos NG, the MKI will carry three of those, while I think the modified MKIs will carry 5.

We won't even have enough Brahmos.

Congrats HAL, DRDO and IAF. Carrying a 2.5 ton missile on a fighter is no joke! It will have 500 km range I guess. Any where else they have similar payload?

Imagine 3 sukhois heading towards an enemy aircraft carrier/ installations with 9 Brahmos missiles !

They can fire and forget and return to base from 400 km, Brahmos missile will do the rest !

Now we can take on ships 1000 km away easily... (Su-30 600 km and Brahmos 400 km). If we launch 3 Brahmos against a ship like 052D, it will not survive.

MKI equipped with Brahmos is a a deadliest combination. It is particularly very dangerous in sea. No ship can escape from Brahmos launched from MKI at a 15000 m height. It will bloody dive on any ship in vertical flight and break into two pieces. May not god make our enemy face this combo.
