PESHAWAR (Agencies) – Nineteen members of paramilitary forces were killed in Taliban attacks on a checkpost near the Afghan border, security officials said Friday.
Officials told the BBC that Afghan militants had crossed the border and stormed the army post in the Lower Dir area. Local sources said the attack by the unidentified gunmen on a checkpost in the Kharki area of Lower Dir, an area bordering Afghanistan’s insurgency-hit Nuristan province, was launched at around 4 am Thursday. The attackers came from across the Durand Line border and entered Pakistani territory and attacked the post with heavy weapons before storming it and overpowering the FC personnel and policemen.
Around 200 armed militants had surrounded the post, a security official said.
He said 14 of the security forces died in the ambush on Thursday, and a further two were killed in a subsequent attack on troops later sent to reinforce the position.
In the first attack, “fourteen people were killed including nine Frontier Corps soldiers and five police officials,” the official said, adding that five or six other members of the security forces were wounded.
However, three injured soldiers were succumbed to their wounds later during treatment raising the death toll to 19.
The sources said that contingents of the FC and the police rushed to the scene shortly after the attack but the gunmen ambushed them too and further casualties took place. The sources said later the Pakistan army gunship helicopters pounded the mountainous area in the Kharki area and soldiers were dispatched to the area to reinforce the personnel at the border.
Local police official Saleem Marwat told AFP that dozens of militants had seized control of the post on Thursday afternoon for the second time, after troops had managed to recapture their outpost overnight.
According to the BBC, local people blamed the Nato forces and the Afghan security personnel for the attack on the Pakistani border post.
Meanwhile, people from different areas of Lower Dir have started moving to safer places due to repeated attacks of militants and security forces operations.

LOWER DIR, PAKISTAN (BNO NEWS) -- Militants on Friday attacked a Pakistani check post killing 14 soldiers near the Afghan border, Online International News Network (OINN) reported.

The attack took place on Friday morning as a large group of militants crossed from the Afghan province of Kunar and attacked the security forces. The Kharakhai check post is located in the remote area of Jandool in Lower Dir district.

The militants fired at the Pakistani post for hours which was defended by Frontier Corps and local security forces. In addition to the 14 Pakistani troops killed, seven more were injured.

Authorities deployed more Frontier Corps units to the check post and launched a massive operation against the militants. Security Forces gained back the control of the facility.

It is estimated that around 300 militants participated in the attack but no official data has been released. Fazal Karim, a local government official, said that five soldiers were beheaded after the insurgents occupied the post.

Cameron Munter, the United States ambassador to Pakistan, condemned the "terrible attack" on personnel of the Frontier Corps. The U.S. diplomat labeled the death of Pakistani soldiers and law enforcement officials as a tragic loss.

"The United States deeply admires and respects the commitment and sacrifices of Pakistan’s military forces in the fight against violent extremists," the Ambassador added. "We will continue to work with the people and government of Pakistan to build a peaceful and secure future for its citizens."

My condolences to the families of these men and my prayers are with the fallen brothers.

There needs to be more monitoring of this border area. I mean 300 men with heavy weapons in tow, crossing the Afghan side of the border is quite a sight and it wasn't picked up. The army should deploy far heavier firepower to more forward areas and reinforce the FC with regular troops.

This comes a day after General Kayani said militants backs are broken so CIA and Karzai send in militants from Afghanistan into Pakistan to kill Pakistan army.

There needs to be more security on our border with Afghanistan until the death of Karzai.

Karzai hates Pakistan's very existence. There never can be a peaceful FATA if Karzai is still in Afghanistan.

300 seems to be a pretty large group to go unnoticed... how can the surveillance and intelligence miss them?

This also highlights the weak defence PA has on its side of the border.

Karzai hasn't got ANYTHING to say in the government, nor is he thought important enough to. The government is run by NATO and NA and if Karzai dies, they will find another puppet who will take over Karzai's script. Protests should be put again against NATO and the NA needs to be destroyed as politicians if Kabul, for a change, wants HUMANS to run the country.

It surprises me as well that 300 men could cross the border that easily and it should immediately be investigated. Nonetheless, my condelences to the victims' near ones.

RIP

This border with Afghanistan is such an issue! Obviously NATO and the afghan army don't know how to do their jobs :disagree:

Someone is (indirectly and directly) trying to create friction between Afghan Taliban and Pakistan Army, especially as U.S/NATO/Karzai try to warm up with the Afghan Taliban.

These are some of the last desperate attempts by Nato.
