Anyway, Assad made a big mistake by not stepping down. He could have simply left power like Mubarak did ir better still like Tunisia's former dictator did. If he did that then life in Syria would have carried on as usual and everyone would have forgotten there was ever a dictator in Syria . However his greed for power(like every other dictators in the developing world) made him put himself first before his country.

In my opinion, Syria would have carried on as usual if NATO and other Arab nations didn't start supporting rebel groups. Without support, they wouldn't have dared to challenge Assad and if they did, the war would have been over within a couple of months max.
