30 years late the LCA in testing

The Russian jet was designed in 1982 but failed to achieve any results in 1986 (when it was supposed to be ready for flight). Bharat originally wanted to test its own engine in 1996. It was to be called the Kavari. The Kevari was finally abandoned after spending more than a $1 billion. Both were colossal failures. The abject fiascoes called, Bharati projects placed the Indian Air Force in a sever crunch. Unable to manufacture or assemble the Aircraft, Delhi hit the panic button and decided to purchase US and Russian arms. While almost all the Migs in the Bharati Air Force remain grounded, the IAF has been unable to meet its goals on the number of battle squadrons that it needs.

After about 30 years of design and re-design, the IAF finally decided to use the GE 404 engine for the vintage air craft design that is by most Aviation standards obsolete. The price of the plane also leaves much to be desired. “The first 20 aircraft will cost India nearly 20 billion rupees ($444.40 million)”. Comparable airplanes cost half as much.

The Washington Post says “The air force is expected to start flying the first squadron next year after years of production delays and cost overruns.”

China on the other hand is now producing the cutting-edge Stealth Air Craft, and its J-20 is comparable to the best of the best. Even Pakistan designed and flow the JF-17 Thunder in four years, and its Air Force has two squadron of the plane already deployed.

It is amazing that the Washinton Post described the Bharati failure, but failed to mention the success of the JF-17 Thunder.

t took the Tejas 1,500 test flights and 23 years of development to get to this point. Isn’t that too long?

You have to see that it started as a thought process in 1983 and there was no funding at that point. For the next ten years, we firmed up the requirements and then went into project definition phase. We went to France and Germany and took their expertise in fixing up the aerodynamic configuration. Post that we were ready with a firm proposal and the funding finally started from the second half of 1992. It did take time, but we had to go through the proper processes.
We never had a single failure in 1,500 flights of Tejas: ADE

Wow all IAF planes grounded? just try send one jet to Indian air space, will see what happens..

22 million per plane , good rate...:lol::lol:

Only time will tell, and this time they have no model plane to reverse engineer...

dEven Pakistan designed and flow the JF-17 Thunder in four years, and its Air Force has two squadron of the plane already deploye.

Russian design, not Pakistani and not even Chinese..

It is amazing that the Washinton Post described the Bharati failure, but failed to mention the success of the JF-17 Thunder.

Source please.....

Seems now western media is unbiased? only for LCA

After a long delay, the LCA is ready. How does it feel?

Everyone talks about the delays. It is not correct to say that the programme started in 1983, when the government first thought of working on a combat aircraft. They decided to put Rs:560 crore seed money for preparing the project definition, but there was no clarity. Even the air staff requirement (ASR) [standards for the engine] came only in 1985. In 1987-88, the project definition was prepared and the proposal to make prototypes was submitted. The government said they cannot take a risk with that kind of money and they split the programme into two parts; technology demonstration (TD) programme and proto-vehicle development project. In 1993, they gave Rs:2,199 crore for the TD. So, the actual programme started only in 1993.
In fact, clarity came only in 2004-05. In 2001, we flew the first aircraft and in 2004, we did the TD for the government, after which they released ?3,320 crore. The first proto vehicle (PV1) came out in December 2005. The IAF got confidence in the programme and gave the standard of preparation of fighter aircraft. So, the fillip came in 2005. From then on, the programme has been progressing rapidly, especially after Defence Minister A.K. Antony tilted the balance in favour of the LCA by publicly stating that the government would support the project, irrespective of any developments.

For more details .. there is a loooooongggg.. dedicated sticky thread...

Pakistan has designed and flow the JF-17 Thunder ,india learned its lesson & 'll design & flow its 5th gen fighter pakfa .

I like the way pakistan manage things ,find a partner & get things done ,unlike bharti going all alone & getting thing messed up .
may be because in pakistan, army dictates terms & conditions to govt & reverse happens in bharti

Sir, than anyone will post anything from hate blogs where there is no facts. How can be a fighter 30 years late when the programme started in about 22 years back? Also there are full of lies in this article.
