KARACHI: The Pakistan Scrabble Association (PSA) organized 23rd Pakistan Scrabble Championship 2011 from 4th to 19th June 2011 at Beach Luxury Hotel, Karachi.
The objective of the Championship was to encourage players from all over Pakistan to participant on a single platform and most importantly it was designed to filter out the best players of Pakistan in order make them represent the country in World Youth Scrabble Championship 2011, Poland. PSAs growing popularity is evident in the 23rd Pakistan Scrabble Championship 2011 with the massive participation of players.
Over 300 players participated in Masters, 11-17 Age Group, 18-25 Age Group and 25 + Age Group Event categories. 5 players from Badin, 3 players from Chaghi, 1 from Lahore, 2 from Hyderabad and 1 from Gwadar participated in the national event which was one of the achievements. The event witnessed the enthusiastic participation of players from outside Karachi who have travelled far away from their destinations to participate in National Championship and their performances as well which was beyond expectation. The officials hope to bring more massive participation in next National Event by reaching out the players in their areas for their encouragement along with the promotion of Scrabble. PSA is encountering stiff challenges to grow this sport as an official sport and started making dialogs with the concerned government authorities.
Player of 11-17 Age group Category
The Championship Started with Masters Category Round 1 and 2 from 4th-5th June followed by 11-17 Age group category rounds on 12th June and 18-25 & 25 + Age group Category on 19th June. The 19th June Day also included the special categories of Novice and Teachers.
In Masters Category Rashid Khan was declared as the Champion by having 17 wins and 1 loss and a massive spread of +1093. Followed by him was Rodney Judd having a spread of +684 having 12/18 wins. Yasir Jamshed managed to secure the 3rd spot having a spread of +643 and 11/18 wins.
23rd Pakistan Scrabble Championship
In 11-17 Age group Category, Talal Amjad finally knocked off Shayan Khatri from the 2nd spot and making himself the Champion of the event and having a massive spread, +1062. Syed Taha Huda grabbed the 2nd spot for himself with a spread of +818 and out of the blue Hafsa Ishaq jumped in to grab the 3rd spot, winning all her games and maintaining a spread of +562.
In 18-25 Age group Category, Taha M. Sheikh was outstanding throughout the event. He finished 1st with a massive spread of +860. The top 3 positions remained the same as the last round with Bilal Shoaib finishing 2nd with a spread of +449 and Erum Fatima finishing 3rd with a spread of +331.
Scrabble
In 25 + Age group Category, Muhammad Jahanzaib Khan after a tough fight managed to win the game by 34 points making himself the Champion. Shahzaib Khatri finished 2nd with 5/6 wins and had a spread of +542. Safdar Ali Naqvi remained 3rd having a spread of +485 and 5/6 wins.
In Special Category (Teacher and Novice), the Champion in teachers category was Rafiq Daud, with 5/5 wins and a spread of +412. Amjab Wahab secured 2nd spot having a spread of +184. Raiha Arshad Mirza was pushed down to the 3rd spot due to her low spread which was +171. In Novice Category, Hammad Hadi was secured 1st Position having 6/6 wins and a spread of +617, Javeria Salman bounced back to the 2nd spot having 5/1 wins and +725 spread. Pabanay secured the 3rd position having a spread of +676.
The gracious presences during the finals and award distribution ceremony of the chief guest Mr. Ahmed Ali Rajput, Secretary, Sindh Olympic Association with the supportive consultancy of Guest of Honor Mr. Romis Ali, Senior Director General- Events and Productions, International Human Rights Commission was a significant achievement for the promotion of this sports and guidance for Pakistan Scrabble Association. We achieved the targets of National Championship by bringing the participating from all over Pakistan along with filtering out the best player to represent Pakistan in World Championship. We are also hopeful with the government for an official recognition as soon as they notice remarkable performances by PSAs players in National and International Event. The championship has not only served entertainment but also promoted the education through Scrabble Sports in Pakistan. The chief guest awarded players with prestigious awards to the winning champions and In order to encourage players from all parts of Pakistan special prizes were given to the best player from each city/area. Waseem Khatri was announced as one of the player who will be participating in World Youth Scrabble Championship due to his ranking standard.
I found the event very interesting and of good quality. This sport is for all ages and PSA has placed their valuable efforts to promote it.. We welcome the officials of Pakistan Scrabble Association to have collaboration with Sindh Olympic Association for the affiliation in order to make Scrabble recognize as a sports officially, said Ahmed Ali Rajput, Secretary, Sindh Olympic Association.
