22 Security Personnel Killed After Gunfight with Maoists in Bijapur, One Jawan Still Missing

On Saturday, five personnel were reported dead and 12 were wounded in the second major attack in the Maoist-hit Bastar region in 10 days.

Officials also said Maoists suffered heavy casualties in the encounter in Tarem on the Bijapur-Sukma border, some 400 kilometres from state capital Raipur.

Twenty-two security personnel have died in a gunfight with Maoists in Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur, officials said on Sunday. One jawan was still missing. On Saturday, five personnel were reported dead and 12 were wounded in the second major attack in the Maoist-hit Bastar region in 10 days.
Officials also said Maoists suffered heavy casualties in the encounter in Tarem on the Bijapur-Sukma border, some 400 kilometres from state capital Raipur. An official briefing on the incident was likely in evening on Sunday.

A ground report from News18 Chhattisgarh claimed that Maoists not only ambushed the security forces but also snatched their weapons, uniforms and other equipment. Officials feared that the casualties could be as high as 26.
Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAVs) were deployed in the region to track down the movement of Maoists fleeing in area on Sunday.
