22 Indian security personnel killed in Naxal attack in Chhattisgarh

So far we have not seen long range sniper rifles ( or even scope equipped hunting rifles ) with the Naxalites. Naxalites have been seen with high quality vintage civilian hunting rifles looted from hunters which can be used for sniping, but these are all with iron sights and not equipped with scopes. India does not import civilian hunting scopes anymore so access to these are limited . Even if the Naxalites did get modern hunting scopes, fitting and zeroing these on to a vintage rifle is technically very difficult. Additionally snipers need to practice on a range and the sound of range practice training would attract the attention of the security forces.

If the Naxalites have snipers, these would be using looted sniping rifles but of what type is unclear.
The security forces may be using Dragunov SVD, Steyr SSG 69 type rifles but these are used mainly by the Indian Army. The local district reserve police may have dedicated snipers.

It is possible that some hunters, who are sufficiently competent in long range hunting shots, may have joined the Naxalites, and they may simply be using vintage high quality civilian hunting rifles with accurate iron sights. But hunting has long since been banned in India, so the capabilities of civilians in hunting rifles is practically non-existent.
In fact overall India, which once had an enthusiastic legal civilian gun ownership, has practically lost all the civilian capabilities in firearms proficiency. Civilian competency is restricted to a few dozen professional competition shooters for international events ( Olympics etc, ). Due to restrictive laws all the civilian firearms competency is with criminals and terrorists.

But what I am saying is pure conjecture. So far there is no open source photographic confirmation showing Naxalites equipped with sniping rifles.

Even a cursory glance at the trajectory of Naxalite movements in India demonstrates the increasing sophistication of their arsenal. During the initial years of the movement, Naxalite groups used traditional weapons like lathis (staffs), spears, sickles and other sharp edge weapons and single and double barrel guns, mostly stolen from village landlords and the police arsenal.

The groups now have access to the AK series of rifles, landmines and Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) among others. Groups like the PWG and the MCC also have dedicated underground arms production units. In addition, snatchings during attacks on the security forces, a complex network of criminals, arms smugglers, gun dealers and networking with other militant groups provide a complex and varied source of arms for the Naxalites.

The looting of weapons from police personnel, civilians and private companies has always been a source of arms. The Naxalites also loot explosives from private companies. In Andhra Pradesh, Naxalites receive ammunition, explosive materials and arms pilfered from ordnance factories. Empty cartridges, parts of rifles, and explosives manufactured just six months earlier at an ordnance factory was seized from a Naxalite dump in the Warangal district of Andhra Pradesh.

Purchases from arms smugglers and gunrunners -particularly from Bihar -constitute another important source of arms. Some of these smugglers also supply weapons to militant groups operating in India's Northeast.

There are over 1,500 illegal arms manufacturing units in Bihar and most of them are located in the Nalanda, Nawada, Gaya and Munger districts. The general breakdown of law and order, the proliferation of criminal gangs, the presence of Naxalites and private armies of landowners, the criminalization of politics, an ill-equipped police force and the existence of a collusive network between criminals, extremists, and a section of politicians have all contributed to the massive growth of Bihar's illegal gun industry, Bihar moreover, has many ordnance factories and workers smuggle out blueprints, creating a cottage industry in arms manufacture in many homes.

The nexus between legal segments of society, including sections of the administration, and Naxalite groups continues to flourish. Police in Patiala, Punjab; exposed links between licensed gun dealers in Punjab and Haryana and the PWG operating in Bihar. Apart from a huge quantity of arms and ammunition, police seized 12 fake arms licenses issued by different authorities, including the Home Secretary of Bihar and several Deputy Commissioners of Bihar, Assam and Jharkhand. The gang used to procure fake arms licenses from different authorities and then approach gun houses in Punjab and Haryana, and the latter knowingly supplied them with guns against these fake licenses for a heavy amount.

Networking with other insurgent groups has also produced a steady flow of weapons into the Naxalite armory. The Indo-Nepal border areas are also emerging as a route for arms smuggling. The Uttar Pradesh (UP) Police seized a truck carrying weapons in Maharajganj on the Indo-Nepal border. The arms, procured from Naxalites in eastern Uttar Pradesh, were intended for the Maoist insurgents in Nepal. Reports said the Maoists in Nepal had obtained a large number of sophisticated weapons valued at Rupees 55 million from the PWG. The UP Police seized a huge cache of arms in Siddharthnagar near the border. The captured couriers confessed that the arms were being sent to the Maoists and that they had already successfully delivered three earlier consignments.

At least two arms consignments have found their way to Andhra Pradesh recently. Taking advantage of the road and rail links between East Midnapore and Orissa the consignments traveled to Koraput in Orissa before reaching the Dandakaranya forest belt, from where the cache moved to Adilabad in Andhra Pradesh. Reports also indicate that the PWG had acquired shoulder-fired weapons that could target vehicles.

Bastar tragedy reveals strategic failures in India’s internal security management

A detailed investigation will no doubt shed more light on the reasons behind this debacle and both the Chhattisgarh government and the Home Ministry in Delhi will have to go back to the drawing board to objectively take stock of Tekulguda.

The tactical/operational strand first. Preliminary reports suggest that as many as 2,000 security personnel drawn from different organisations (CRPF, Cobra commandos, local police, et al) had been assembled to find a local Maoist rebel leader — Madvi Hidma — and that this large force was lured into a trap and then attacked.

Media reports indicate that this force of police and para-military personnel panicked and fled – leaving their dead and wounded behind. This is a very poor reflection of the leadership that was entrusted with this operation

Many troubling questions arise. Why was such a large and diverse force assembled when this would have been detected by the adversary? Was the operation properly planned and led by senior officers of the respective forces? Did local intelligence anticipate such an exigency by way of the fire-power deployed by the Maoist cadres? When the attack began, why was there no attempt to regroup and punish the Maoists? Why were the dead and wounded abandoned by their comrades?

"Black topped roads"??

Hindustani science has finally discovered tarmac while PRC is building bullet trains in Tibet. These Maoists apparently should be grateful for tarmac, while under communism, they would get bullet trains.

Why are you people so full of rubbish?
@Indus Pakistan @El Sidd @jamahir

Dear well wishers of India,

Don't worry. Let alone bullet train, if Indian state doesn't build even this basic road, the adivasis would still not behave in the way that you are fervently wishing for. The tribals would NOT erupt.

You should ponder why Pakistan's establishment couldn't come up with a sound plan to deal with India in 70 years whereas a few thousands/lakhs Englishmen ruled over faraway continents.

@Lt General spoke about using enemy's energies against enemy himself but for that to happen the enemy should be having energy in the first place.

Some member of this forum used the word "resilient" about the Naxalites some days ago. Indian middle class citizens ( who are the target audience of Kangana didi ) and the Indian establishment should ponder why.

What I missed saying was that there are close to 200,000 government personnel deployed to kill the Naxals and these personnel have been ordered to do so by the Establishment.

What the Establishment - especially the Supreme Court - should do is have peace dialogue with the Naxals who are a disciplined force who can advise the State on various things.

Update: 22 Indian security personnel killed in this attack

Five security personnel were killed and a few others injured on April 3 in an encounter with Naxals at a forest in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district, a top police officer said.

According to the police, some Maoists are also suspected to have been killed during the exchange of fire.

"The gunbattle broke out in Tarrem area (along Sukma and Bijapur border) when a joint team of security forces was out on an anti-Naxal operation," Chhattisgarh Director General of Police D.M. Awasthi said.

The personnel belonging to the CRPF's elite Commando Battalion for Resolute Action unit (CoBRA), the District Reserve Guard (DRG) and the Special Task Force (STF) were involved in the operation, he said.

"As per the preliminary information, five jawans were killed and a few others were injured in the gunfight," Mr. Awasthi said, adding that further details are awaited.

On March 23, five DRG personnel were killed when Naxals blew up a bus carrying the security personnel with an IED in Narayanpur district.

Terrible and sad. While the Indian elite overlords the poor Indian Jawaans from simple and poor families die.
