2016 Russian tank contests start

Well. Mr Smart Alec, I have admitted in my previous posting, I am NO expert and a layman in Tank nor its working mechanism but the BIG QUESTION is, are you one?

I am just amazed at this photo that the tracks are still in place and the tank is still operating.

without sprocket wheel, you can't move. those are idler wheel.

I am not an expert on mechanics. Just speak on behalf on my limited knowledge on transmission and steering.

The steering mechanics of the tank is very different from the car. For a car, steering is completely separate from the transmission thing. However,a tank steers by varying the speeding of one of its two tracks. The steering and transmissions are usually coupled. Russian Tanks (T72, T90, probably T14) use the mechanical transmission which has two planetary gearboxs to adjust the speed of two tracks. This type of steering is primitive and unergonomic. The driver steers the tank by applying the two levels that control the motion of the tracks the same way the people drive the tractors. The turning radius is fixed based on the driving speed because of the planetary gearbox design. Inexperienced drivers of russian tanks flip over the tanks frequently due to slight misoperation. The Chinese tanks are not fundamentally different (Type 96 and Type 99)

Germans first introduced the hydro-mechanical transmissions HSWL 354 on their leopard II, which comes with a torque converter like modern car. Its based on fancy electro-hydraulics that allows better control of torque output on the tracks, resulting in much more superior maneuverability, stability, traction control, and efficiency. This design became the benchmark of modern western tanks. Not until recently, we are able some of our new export tanks (VT-4) are equipped with this transmission. Many spectate that 96B is also using tthis powertrain given the same exhaust grille and engine layout. Hopefully its true.
Similar ideas was implemented in the Porsche entry for the PzKpfW VI Tiger design competition
where the engine created electricity for use by the electric motors driving the sprockets.
Unfortunately the engines caught fire when Hitler was visiting, so the award
went to the competitor (Henschel?)

shit happens~and we dont blame for tank only.
look at this poor tank.Losing its wheel nearly same place as 96B

Looks like the T-72 lost its sprocket wheel this time or is that an idle wheel way in front.

It seems Russia fits a very powerful engine. China shall ditch the mentality of playing fair and just fit 1300HP engine.
The 1000HP is definitely not going to match Russia 1196HP engine.

.
maybe 1000hp is a economical choice. Acceptable for a 40-50 ton tank.

Yes, for general and mass production, yes but just for the competition. I dont think it any harmful to give specialise uprated engine.

12 units of new engine for 96B (aka 96AG) was delivered from March 2016. 12 units of type 96B were produced.

Another 6 units of spare engine were delivered later.

The 96Bs we saw are initial development vehicles, i.e test vehicles. Final production version will be available may be in 2017.

96B is not the official designation yet, some called it 96AG instead. G is initial for Gai - Upgrade/ Improved Modification.

But the main function of such competition is trying to estimate the actual battlefield capabilities. I think joining the competition with standart equipment shows China's self esteem. If China joins with a special equipment that wouldn't exist in a battlefield then that would make the entire event meaningless.

But layman knows nothing. Perception sometimes can be decisive in military deal.
