MANILA, Philippines – Twenty Vietnamese fishermen were arrested for allegedly poaching and catching sea turtles, locally known as “pawikan,” off the coast of Balabac town in Palawan on Wednesday morning, a military official said.

Maj. Neil Estrella, spokesman of the military’s Western Command, said the Navy’s Patrol Ship 35 was dispatched to Martinez Point after receiving a tip from the residents that a “suspicious vessel” was in the area.

Estrella said Navy personnel intercepted the fishing vessel at around 9:54 a.m. about 9.5 nautical miles off Martinez Point.

Investigation showed that 20 Vietnamese fishermen and 20 live sea turtles were on the ship.

Estrella said the fishermen and their catch were then escorted to Puerto Princesa City for the filing of appropriate charges.

A number of Vietnamese fishermen have been previously arrested off Balabac.

Balabac is not part of the Spratly group of islands which is being claimed in part or whole by several Asian countries, namely the Philippines, Vietnam, China, Taiwan, Malaysia and Brunei.
