2 Turkish soldiers, 3 village guards killed in Siirt attack

Two Turkish soldiers and three village guards were killed in an attack late Wednesday in Turkeys southeastern province of Siirt.
Alleged members of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party, or PKK, attacked the outpost of a commando battalion near Doğanköy village, in Siirts Pervari district, killing two soldiers and three village guards supporting the military in its fight against the outlawed group.
The two soldiers, including a lieutenant, were killed and two more were wounded by gunfire from the assailants, who were suspected of trying to infiltrate the outpost. The three village guards were killed in an ambush by suspected PKK terrorists on their way to the clash point.
Supporting commandos were sent to the district by helicopter while a broad military operation was launched to locate the parties responsible for the attack. Sources from the armed forces reported that 12 PKK members were killed in the ensuing battle.
The PKK, which is listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States and the European Union, has dramatically stepped up its attacks in the past month, threatening to spread the violence outside of the Southeast, its main area of operations.
A military ceremony was organized in Şırnak for the two slain soldiers, whose bodies were subsequently sent to their hometowns. Yunus Berbers body was sent to Karaman, while Mustafa Çuhadars was sent to Konya. The bodies of the three village guards were sent to Doğanköy. The military ceremony was closed to the press.
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan sent a condolence message regarding the deaths to Chief of General Staff Gen. İlker Başbuğ.
Neighboring Syria has meanwhile expanded its operations against the PKK and detained 400 alleged members of the organization, the Anatolia news agency reported, adding that the state has said it will revoke land-use rights it granted to people in Syria if they are found to be supporting the PKK. In the last week, 11 PKK members have been killed in Syria in conflicts with security forces, Anatolia said.
Terrorist attacks have claimed the lives of 19 soldiers and two civilians in Turkey over the past two weeks.
