New Delhi: The Indian Air Force has lost 18 MiG aircraft from its fighter fleet in the last three years. 'A total 18 MiG series fighter aircraft have crashed in the past two years and the current financial year till December 5,' Defence Minister A K Antony told the Lok Sabha.

On the reasons behind the mishaps, he said 'the major causes of these crashes are human error, technical defects and bird hits.'

The IAF investigated every accident through a Court of Inquiry and remedial measures were taken to check their recurrence in the future, the Minister said in a written reply to a question.

'Besides, a continuous and multi-faceted effort is always underway in the IAF to enhance and upgrade flight safety,' he added

Listing out the measures, the Minister said enhancing the quality of training to improve the skill levels, ability to exercise sound judgment and situational awareness of pilots was being pursued.

'Constant interaction with the Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM), both indigenous and foreign, is also maintained to overcome the technical defects of aircraft,' he added.

Antony said the IAF was undertaking anti-bird measures to counter the threat posed to aircraft.

Apart from the aircraft lost, the government had paid over Rs 12 lakh as compensation, he added.

New Delhi, Dec. 15: The air force has lost 18 MiG series fighter aircraft in three years at the rate of six a year till December 5, statistics placed in Parliament today revealed.

Defence minister A.K. Antony told the Lok Sabha that “the major causes for these crashes are human error, technical defects and bird hits”. He said each incident was investigated by courts and “remedial measures” have been taken.

The MiG series in the combat fleet comprise the mainstay MiG 21 interceptors, MiG 29 and MiG 27 air superiority fighters. The MiG 25, used mostly for surveillance, has been phased out. “Besides, a continuous and multi-faceted effort is always under way in the IAF to enhance and upgrade flight safety,” Antony said.

The loss of 18 aircraft in three years — none can be called new — is not a statistic that air headquarters’ directorate of inspections and flight safety would be happy with.

Antony said the quality of training was being improved so pilots could hone their skills better.

The crash of the 500th plane serves as a milestone as the highest number of crashes of any airforce in the world in the history of mankind. The bulk of the Indian Airforce is made up of all this flying junk that succumbs to gravity more then the bellies in the Indian Lok Sabha.

I heard they upgraded these to Mig-21Bison,which they claim did very well against USAF in excercise.However US people claims the other way.
I have one question,though off topic,isn't the F-7s better than this migs??

IAF is still flying many airframes that were built in late 60s and early 70s, I am sure once those are phased out along with Mig-23/27, the crash rate will come down…

PAF had also had some pretty bad spells with older Mirages and F-7s but somehow the trend has been contained ….Like many airforces, it is still the ‘Human error’ that contributes to the majority of accidents in PAF and IAF…

Machines are still faithful, it’s us that let the machines down…

you're there , the bison's did well in Cope India and Red Flag , there is also a mention about small RCS making it hard to detect in the video.

The remainder of the Migs , except the new Naval ones are rubbish and need to changed as 1st order in priority for the IAF.

I think i've said this before in a thread that Indian performance in the RedFlag was horrendous. They weren't able to differentiate between Friends and Foes. In case of a war, the Indian Airforce would wiggle around it's own tail and end up shooting their own Fighters.

The rest, well, they're good at crashing without any interference anyway so yeah lol.

Yes, the IAF knows its problem, that's its reason not to attack Pakistan. We can be very proud of Pakistan, which has the best air force in the world, we had to bring many victims but got eventually our strength in our Air Force. At least we could fulfill this one wish of Muhammad Ali Jinnah. :pakistan:
