153 Indian refugees at risk as their boat leaks en-route to Australia.

A boat with 153 refugees from Sri Lanka on board is in trouble 250 km from Christmas Island, it was reported on Saturday.

Passengers have spoken to reporters in Australia, saying the boat left from India two weeks ago and contains 32 women and 37 children and they are mostly Tamils from Sri Lanka.

“We are refugees. We come from Sri Lanka, we stayed in India and we are unable to live there. That’s why we are coming to Australia,” a man calling himself Duke told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

The man said the vessel was leaking and struggling in high seas and strong winds, and requested assistance.

The Australian government has vowed to stop boats carrying asylum seekers from reaching its territory, which includes Christmas Island in the Indian Ocean.

Several boats have been towed back to Indonesia in the past six months, but it was not clear whether this boat could be towed to Indonesia because it did not originate there.

Immigration Minister Scott Morrison refused to comment on the latest boat but said there was nothing to indicate an extreme risk of life at sea.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott told reporters on Saturday that the government would act in accordance with its existing policy.

People who arrive by boat without visas are taken to detention centres on Nauru and Papua New Guinea’s Manus Island. No boat carrying refugees has reached Australia since December 19, 2013.
Boatload of Sri Lankan refugees in trouble off Christmas Island - report

@Aeronaut, please change the title.

@xdrive, Srilankan refugees fleeing prosecution.

Refugee boat from India? Scott Morrison is not saying

A lot of refugees use Indonesia as a base and leave by boat from there too - they don't become Indonesian refugees - please change the title accordingly.

This boat did not originate from Indonesia but from India which is clearly mentioned in the media reports.

They are not Indian refugees, as your changed title of the thread suggests - they are Sri Lankan refugees as per the report I posted.

so it was a fake title? i thought there was a rule about not changing the title?

Doctored title, because the boat was supposedly an Indian boat (or not), and launched from India, even though the passengers weren't.

No flags or markers to suggest that it's an Indian boat.

More economic migrants pretending to be refugees desperately trying to reach Australia because they have the false idea that they will be given citizenship and will be allowed to live here.

Silly people. If they choose to take the dangerous boat journey that is likely to end in death, it's their own fault.

Here is a good video from our Immigration Minister making it clear people who come here illegally by boat will NEVER live here and will NEVER be allowed to stay here. You will be sent to another country where you will be held in detention until you agree to go home.

Lol what? Not one part of what you just wrote is right let alone does it make any sense.

Illegal immigration by economic migrants seeking to live off of our welfare system will never be tolerated. The boats will be stopped.

Not true at all. Australian Aborigines control most of their own land via Native titles and the Australian Aborigine population is now larger than it ever has been.
I know past is past and present Aussies have every right to decide their policies but history needs to be told as it is. Aborigines owned ALL land before Europeans set foot there in exact way, through boats... they are living on welfare (natural resources) of aborigines, they killed aborigines at will (who can forget infamous small pox laced blankets?? or how aborigine kids were separated from their parents to be "civilized"??). So, please stop efforts to change facts and stick to reasoning....
Of-course, we Indians too came from Africa but currently don't have free immigration for all Africans, same logic applies to Aus..

People need to remember that these are just "reports" and aren't confirmed. People illegally trying to enter Australia often ring reporters and spout lies because they know Australian media who are sympathetic to their illegal migration will report it and they think it will put pressure on the government.

Until these people have been intercepted(if they even exist) the Government won't say anything about it, which is the right thing to do. Giving a live running commentary on it serves no purpose.

No...but we dont go ahead painting Pakistan as grand...in fact we discuss our problems hence the never ending threads....but Indians pop into threads unrelated to India and boast about India...so just curious...why would someone run away from so called great India?

These people are apparently Tamil refugees from Jaffna. So only the Srilankan Govt. can determine what these people were running away from! :)
Try speaking to Mahinda Rajapakse, you might get enlightened.

Are they Indian Tamils or Srilankan Tamils? Indian southern coastline is a starting point of human traffickers to Australia.

They are from Jaffna. Now in which country is the province of Jaffna situated?
Even a school Atlas can provide the answer.

Sri Lanka has announced that the refugees on the boat are Sri lankan nationals.

Even one of the refugees on the boat told Australia Broadcasting Corporation that they are Sri Lankan.

That fact is obvious.
Only the 'Thread-Starter' over-looked that fact; for reasons that may only be guessed!

While I have "zero sympathy" for the methods and objectives of the Tamil Tigers, the Srilankan Tamils have some serious issues for years. Their original leadership was moderate, but when successive SL Govts. notably in the 1970s rode rough-shod over them; the Tamil Tigers (a violent and extremist group) gained traction and took over control. That period was when the JVP (Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna) a Sinhala supremacist group in league with the hard-core elements of Buddhist Clergy had taken control of the general SL sentiments.

The recent communal violence involving the SL Muslims is just another indication of the same Sinhala supremacist elements and Buddhist Clergy taking control .
Its a repeat performance, only the Target has changed.

If Australia can't take them , can't Indonesia, Malaysia take them in?

They don't want to because they don't want the burden and claim that because we area rich western country we have to take them. Also the illegals don't want to stay in those countries because they aren't rich and don't have a good welfare system.

Buddy, don't accept illegals. Remember, there is a reason why all countries have a screening system in place. There is a reason why countries ask for background checks.

As much as I am from a democratic country, entities like extra-free media use this as a way of playing extra charitable. You should check where such politically motivated reporting is done to weaken the government system. Freedom of speech doesn't mean anti-national viewpoints.
