The Punjab government has decided to allocate 5,000 acres of land for private solar power projects in the Cholistan which will be allotted to solar power sector investors at a nominal rate of one dollar per acre per year for a 20-year lease.

Out of 5,000 acres of land, 2,500 acre land is situated in Maroot, Bahawalnagar and the rest of 2,500 acres land is located on Din Garh Road, Yazman, Bahawalpur.

Provincial Minister for Energy Sher Ali Khan told a delegation of China Power International, Beijing, headed by Wang Zhi Yin on Friday.

The minister informed the delegates that two grid stations of 66 KW each were already working in the vicinity of Maroot and Yazman under the national power transmission system which could be easily linked with the proposed coal fired power plants.

He said the Punjab government was ready to offer investment in hydro power generation, solar power generation and establishment of bio-mass fired power plants along with wind power plants and coal-fired power plants on the basis of build-operate-transfer basis, build-own-operate-transfer (BOOT) basis and on the basis of build-own and operate (BOO) also.

Six coal-fired power projects are already in the pipeline which would generate 420 MW of electricity, the minister added.

He requested the Chinese investors to consider installation of solar power projects in Cholistan. The government will provide them with the required land on lease under soft conditions besides giving total relaxation in sales tax on imported machinery which is not manufactured locally, he added.

He apprised the delegation of a 500-KV grid station and the coal fired power plant working at Rahim Yar Khan and said the Punjab government was negotiating with the federal government to collaborate in developing an energy corridor from Gadani to the Karachi costal area to facilitate inline transportation of imported coal to different areas of Punjab where the land required for-coal fired power generation will be leased on the market rate.

This Project, when completed, will be a huge relief for South Punjab

1050mw of solar energy is so expensive and it works such a huge area that if we had invested The same money for coal fired power plants we could generate 2-3x more electricity in similar time period. Solar power is really good for domestic or private use but it is still very expensive at government level

It can be reallocated for expensive users nevertheless. The electricity cost of using generators is around 25-28Rs per unit of electricity produced. Solar energy can be provided to industries who are already paying this cost in the shape of burning fuel. Its a matter about allocation.

It depends what type of Solar energy you are talking about.. Solar Thermal, Next Generation Solar Updraft Towers, are much cheaper ways to generate Power. Also, their maintains cost is very high. The only issue is the Land. And Pakistan has enough "Free" Land available for such project, in cholistan, thar, D.I Khan, very large area in Baluchistan (motorway path), will have good enough places for such projects...

ZTE will set up solar power plant in Quaid-e-Azam Solar Park Cholistan and the project will be completed within a year, the Chinese company will set up a 500 megawatt solar power plant. Initially, the Chinese company will establish a 300 megawatt solar power plant which will later be extended to 500 megawatt capacity.

Strange !!! why we need china for every project ? us canada france germany more advance in solar technologies?

I think if we welcome investors from Middle East in setting up wind farms and Solar farms along with investment in Dams and other renewable energy then it would be better and we can also set up manufacturing facilities with Pakistan and some of these facilities is already present like PMTF which can manufacture 5MW wind mill.

What is the price per kW Chinese company is offering.

2.2 Billion Dollars - > Only 1050 MW

Kala Bagh Dam -> 5 Billion -> 4000 MW -> You get water storage + free savings

Sound like we are wasting 1 Billion dollars

Bro, the estimated Cost of Construction of Kalabagh Dam maybe way outdated.

If we ever get serious about building this 30 year old Project, we may haqve to revise the Cost estimates to current prices.
