1 killed, 17 wounded in Kashmir police shooting - International Herald Tribune
SRINAGAR, India: Indian forces opened fire Friday on hundreds of Muslims demonstrating against Indian rule in the disputed region of Kashmir, killing one person and wounding 17 others, police and doctors said.
Police used live ammunition and tear gas after the protesters chanted anti-India slogans and pelted the forces with rocks in Srinagar, the main city in the region, after Friday prayers.
Nazir Ahmed, a doctor at the main hospital in Srinagar, said one man who was shot in the chest died in the hospital.
Kashmir Chief of Police B. Srinivas said police would investigate the incident, adding that clashes had spread to four other districts in Srinagar after news of the man's death.
Last month two civilians were killed when the Indian army allegedly opened fire on them in the Himalayan region. That incident provoked widespread protests against Indian rule. An inquiry by the local government has indicted the Indian army for the killings
Rights groups, however, say such probes rarely yield any concrete results and are often aimed at calming public anger.
Anti-India sentiment runs deep in Kashmir, where most people favor independence from mainly Hindu India or unification with predominantly Muslim Pakistan. Kashmir is divided between India and Pakistan; both countries claim the region and have fought two wars over it.
Militant separatist groups have been fighting since 1989 to end Indian rule. More than 68,000 people, most of them civilians, have been killed in the uprising and subsequent Indian crackdown.
