Muslim Punjabi Tribes and their origins

Look when people move from one place to a better place they are not provided the new greener pastures in plate, they have to displace them, Arabs displaced Bruhi from plains, Dravidians were displaced by Central Asians.
Jats just did not come over and were awarded lands.

In Pakistan Gujjars, Jats, Maliks and Rajputs share the power space quite peacefully as we do not have problem of Scheduled or other backward castes problem. Many prominent Politicians like Shafqat Mahmood fromPTI,Qa ar uz Zaman Qaira from PPP and a big part of PML N is Gujjar as are many prominent from other castes as well. Shoaib Akhter, Muhammed Asif cricketers, Chaudhary Rehmat Ali who gave name of Pakistan.

The point is there is no need to go into which caste is better or stronger Almost everyone has same origins, intermixed.

IE languages in central and south asia were spread by people of western steppe.

Later on turkic/mongols of eastern steppe conquered central asia. IVC people were not really like modern "dravidians" of south india. They were more like Neolithic Iranian farmers skeletons but without steppe or so called NE Euro like admixture. This will be confirmed once we get ancient DNA from harappans skeletons.

Balochistan/Caucasus here is like neolithic iran skeletons tested recently. In every Pakistani ethnicity this component is dominant and take number 1 position over others. After that south asian component and then at 3rd position steppe/euro like admixture. The so called mussalis/christians and majority of Indians have south asian in number 1 and 2nd neolithic iran like admixture but lack steppe/euro admixture.

I got a question for native Punjabi bros here, why are some clans so opposed to intermarriage to people from other clans? I mean I've been told by some people that my clan (Butt) are looked down upon by the Rajputs and the other clans of Pakistan for intermarriage, why is that? Fortunately most of the Pakistani-Americans I know, don't care about caste or race/ethnicity when it comes to marriage/dating but I see how it's such a big deal in Pakistan.

Stop propagating Wikipedia bs written by wannabe Arabs citing wannabe Arab as source. Arains has nothing to do with Arabs, if you have any doubt then get your DNA tested, it's quite easy now. Initially anyone changing religion was thrown out of society and cast system and was considered low by main stream, that's the reason people tried to invent stories.

well whatever i have stated are very commonly known theories about Arains so i am looking forward to unveil the origins of all the clans.... 2ndly what if we r really from arabs or persians? 3rd they r all sunni muslims none of them r shia atleast i never came across any shia arain..

Bhutto are not arain, they are Rajasthani rajput who migrated to Sindh couple of centuries ago and were granted jagir by Mughals.

At one hand you mention blood group and later on claim arains are from Syria or arabs when genetic tests have disproved this theory all together.

those are common theories which i have stated soo i m also looking for some characteristics which r common among arain or which gives some credit to their claim of arab descent or persian descent

do you have any knowledge about Dogars?
and i am talking about Punjabi Dogars not pahari Dogras
Dogars of Punjab are different form pahari dogras Pahari dogras are actually kashmiri dogars and they r local ethnic tribe of kashmir but when it comes to Punjabi dogars they r ethnically more close to jatts and they are too local Punjabi tribe. They are considered brave and fighters. They resembles jatts more closely than any other tribe. their origin was of Hindus just like Kashmiri dogras but they r different group of people. the only share the name

Some of your content is not true, arhia is not in Syria it is near jeroshilum and now is in Palestine, arains were mostly Jews and nosturic Christian, they didn't came with Mohammed Bin Qasim , they migrated though Iran to India, more importantly they are not Aryan origin hence not truly a domestic stock, Bhutoos are also arain add them to in your list, jats and saamat are the original inhabitants of Indus valley civilization hence can be called true Indians or locals or arya- Indians ,rest are all settlers or immigrants,

1st of all if you read the history then palestine, lebanon, Jordan and modern day Syria was considered Shaam in english its called Syria but today it is as you know all those are countries. 2nd of all Arains have never had jewish background. May be they had christian background before islam came in that region as that region was under romans. But again that we can confirm IF we find any truth in a fact that arains are descendants of arab soldiers who accompanied Mohd. bin Qasim. The oldest surviving family with full records of arains is the family of baghbanpura Lahore who built shalamar garden in Lahore. 3rd. Bhuttos are not arains they are rajput clan resided in rajasthan but they migrated to Sindh when they coverted to Islam.

Duuuude I don't think Kashmiri "Dogars" exist.

If you're talking about the "Dogras", then they're a different ethnicity.

In East punjab the war of independence 1857 brought misery to most Gujjar villages for their overwhelming participation, their lands were taken away by British and Gov jobs banned. Gujjars were denigrated in their books as thievely and lazy. Even In my village west Punjab many were forced to falsify their caste as Rajput to get Gov jobs which even is seen today where two members of same family may write Raja and Gujjar as their Surname, in Pakistani Punjab however they have progressed very well.
Here is a long list of Gujjars in Pakistan ,which is unverified and may have mistakes just for info;

Don't mean to rain on your parade, but the Great Gamma is of Kashmiri descent!!!

Arrain mostly came to punjab from Indian punjab. Some came before partition in different time frames and rest came at the time of Partition
Many of them came from there but mostof them were alread residing in Lahore, okara, sahiwal, kasur, and during the partition arains came from indian punjab too like amritsar, jalandhar, batala & gurdaspur. but the best part I find in arains are that we all are related or find out any kind of relation through uncles, aunties and distant relatives.
2nd question is if arrains are desendents of arab soldiers who landed in Sindh then how comes after 1000 years there r more arains in Punjab than Sindh?? due to any event of famine forced them to migrate to Punjab like Kashmiris moved to Punjab 200yrs ago?? or wars??

Duuuude I don't think Kashmiri "Dogars" exist.

If you're talking about the "Dogras", then they're a different ethnicity.

Don't mean to rain on your parade, but the Great Gamma is of Kashmiri descent!!!

brother typing error its dogras

With all due respect, nearly every Pakistani Muslim tribe seems to have invented a story of being descended from Arab soldiers. Now I do not dispute that some may indeed be, but every single one of them..? Seeing the genetic results for the Pakistanis that have done DNA tests, I haven't come across a single one who we can say for certain has much "arab" ancestry.

It's sad because of this childish attempt to link themselves with others have made them forget their own glorious past.

P.S. Don't consider this an attack on the Arrain, most of the ones who claim Arab descent are in the same bracket, including the Awans from whom I come from.

Exactly!!! soo my point is lets see if there is any fact or truth in that by acknowledging a common trait or characteristics or habits or stories of ancestors etc

But bhuttos migrated from Rajasthan because its recorded, no one knows from where else before.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bhutto_family

The older sindhi tribes are sammas and soomra.

most of originaly Sindhis are Rajputs and all their tribes have rajput ancestory soomro, samma, kalharo, palejos even memons

At least Jats never invaded India. They just migrated later than gujjar and rajputs.
Jats are Aryans and they definitely invaded india

I don't agree with the fact that arrain are from Muhammad bin Qasim's army as their customs are very diffirent and don't have a slight touch of arabs. I know it has been a long time but there is not even a slight hint in there.

1.So are most punjabi jatts and rajputs muslim?
2.So what is the origin of my caste which is bais rajput from ajk.

Mostly Rajputs are Rajasthanis, Sindhis, kashmiris, & Punjabis. I think Rajasthanis & Sindhis is where the source is and where they finally settled after invading south asian region and from there they migrated for more land as invaders and that is where they end up in Punjab and Kashmir.

Rajputs are not Kashmiri.

Arain are neither Arab "Banu Ommaya" they originally belongs to Syria but Omayyad Caliph sent them to Areha (Jericho) to keep check on Jews and when Mohammed bin Qasim was sent to Sindh he brings these fighter with him but later regime changed and Mohammed Bin Qasim was killed by Fatmids along with many Arains fighters so the families of the stranded soldiers left Jericho and Syria and join their male soldiers in subcontinent, These people due to prosicution migrated later 1 or two centuries and find refuge in this region later they were inducted into Mughal armies and they form sub casts according o their military skills
  • Arains mostly use the family names (some former titles) of: Chaudhry, Mian, Mehar, Malik, Ramay, Bhutta, Ghurki, Ramday, Bhutto, Sardar, Kardar, Saleemi, Hijazi, Sheikh, Shah, Shami, Munda, Hansi, Gill, Daulay, Chachar, Gaellin, Mulanay, Qutab Shahi, Rattay, Goheer, Ghalar, Gahgeer, Gatku, Kavali, Basroo, Sappal, Jattalay, Bahalwan, Mudh, Teerandaz, Katarband, Bhaila, Rahi, Bhati, Multani, Sayal, Baga, Peer, Dhako and Alrai.

I have noticed that there is a very much interest of many members to discuss about Punjabi muslims so why not lets list and discuss Muslim Punjabi Tribes and their origins.

Arrains: Almost all of them are sunnis and they claim their descent from Syrian soldiers who migrated with Mohd. Bin Qassim from a town in Syria called Areeha ( in english "Jericho" ). Areeha was considered military district of Shaam region. It can be an exaggeration to their claim but one has to look into the research done about them. i read at wikipedia that there some people who think Arain are sub caste of rajputs but I think it is nonsense & some says that arains are persian origin race and Kambojahs are there closest cousins in this regard but again i dont know any kaamboj so i dont know their habits.

1. B blood group is common among them.
2. Most of them are sunnis muslims
3. Most of them live in Punjab and many of them are also living in Sindh
4. Mian, Chaudhry, Bhutta & Meher are common titles found among them
5. They dont have any sub tribes and castes.
6. They are small Landowners. Mostly grow vegetables ( in jokes people always talk about arrains and onions ) The place i mentioned in the introduction from where they originated it is called Areha in arabic and in English its called Jericho. I found out that the people there r into farming so may b there is a clue but then i can be wrong because many people in India are also into agri business too.
7. they are also famous to be in angry mood. ( an old sikh lady told me that Arain badday daadaay honday ne & when i told her that i am an Arrain she was like speechless and said pehle kyun nai dasyea ) i was laughing too.
8. They try not to marry into other tribes or castes but this is a trend of every tribe in Punjab or may i gues everywhere especially in muslim world. ( once a Syed Gillani girl told me that they tend to marry in Pathans and Rajputs and they see others including arrain as a low tribe)

This is what i have found so far please enlighten me with your knowledge of all other Tribes. It will be better if you tell some traits of the tribes as well thank you :)
Number 5: WRONG! There are plenty of Arain sub tribes around bro.
This point somewhat negates number 6 & relates to number 7 & expands on my point above. If you manage to get a compilation of Arain subtribe names, you'll find that an overwhelming majority of those names have a martial (military) origin signifying that unlike their present agrarian outlook, Arains are a martial ethnicity even older than the so called martial nations promoted by the British in their time of rule over the sub continent.
As far as point 8 is concerned, if you are a true Arain & find youself lucky enough to possess an authentic family tree like I do, you'll find that our actual origin goes back to the Banu Ummaya sub tribe of Quraish. Syeds, Farooqis etc are also like us Quraishi & descend from the Banu Hashim & Banu Adi subtribes of Quraish. Always remember this anyone tries to tell you that Arains are a lower ethnicity. Normally tribes of Arab descent in Pakistan generally tend to marry into eachother & this is why Arains preffer Arains though it is beginning to change. Some of my cousins are married to Sunni Syed girls & boys, a couple have married girls from Pathan families.

Most of the Arain stop using these names and adopted honorary titles like Mian, Mehar, Malik, Choudhry or Sardar.

I don't agree with the fact that arrain are from Muhammad bin Qasim's army as their customs are very diffirent and don't have a slight touch of arabs. I know it has been a long time but there is not even a slight hint in there.

were you alive to note down the customs of Mohammad bin Qasim's army. also Anybody who lives in middle east must also know that the a famous appetizer " humus" is always served with onion and green chilli and these people of shaam region love vegetables and serve it in almost all the dishes. but this can be my one sighted experience may be there can be more things which i dont know and differ from my own experience.

I doubt that we have some kind of Quraish ethnicity soo lets stick with arabs in general. i have a family tree of my Maternal side till 150yrs back and 100yrs of my paternal dad but they r cousins from 100yrs back like their family merge into ones if you go back in family tree... but i know that there r not any subtribes in arrain they are usually known through their land holding, professions and status in the society e.g. a small landowner is chaudhry, if he is a professional he becomes meher etc and they r known by the place they r settled in eg Jalandhari Arain.

Arain%2BHistory%2BIn%2BUrdu%2BArain%2Bguldastapk.jpg

An Arain freedom fighter
Punjab's reputation as a loyalist province, which provided the British Indian Army with soldiers and a solid socio-political support base in the form of a dependent landed class, has eclipsed its rather variegated history, which includes heroic tales of resistance to occupation and foreign rule throughout the ages. Thus, for example, Raja Porus, who ruled a principality in northern Punjab in the ancient period, gave stiff resistance to the invading armies of Alexander the Great, but was defeated by the Greeks near Jhelum in 326 BC. The Khatris of Punjab claim him among their ancestors.

According to Kalpana Sahni -- daughter of the famous Rawalpindi-born, Government-College-Lahore-educated Bollywood actor, the late Balraj Sahni, the Khatris of Behra to which their family belongs -- trace their ancestry to Porus. She has narrated this story on the authority of another famous Punjabi Khatri family with a connection to Government College, Lahore, and to Bollywood: Chetan Anand, the noted late Indian filmmaker and elder brother of evergreen, matinee hero Dev Anand.

Then, there is the story of Dulla Bhatti, a Muslim Rajput who led a rebellion against the Mughals during the reign of Akbar. His story has been rendered in both poetry and prose. Rai Ahmed Khan Kharal, claimed both by Muslim Rajputs and Jatts, who took up arms against the British from western Punjab during 1857, is another hero in that tradition.

Closer to our own times, the legend of Bhagat Singh, a Sikh Jatt, has only grown bigger with time, and several Bollywood pictures have been made on that theme. The Kambohs take pride in Udham Singh from their caste who shot dead Sir Michael O'Dwyer, the Punjab governor who originally gave orders for harsh action at Jallianwala, on April 13, 1919. The actual carnage had been ordered on the spot by General Dyer.

However, one great freedom fighter from Punjab whose heroic struggle has not been given proper recognition is Shah Abdul Qadir Ludhianvi. His direct descendant, Maulana Habibur Rahman Sani, who is currently the chief imam of the main Friday Mosque in Ludhiana, in east Punjab, provided me detailed information on him in an interview recorded on Jan 4, 2005, in the courtyard of the mosque.

Maulana Sani's grandfather, Maulana Habibur Rahman, was one of the founders of the Majlis-e-Ahrar, a movement of anti-imperialist nationalist Muslims, who returned to India after spending one day in Lahore in August 1947, arguing that thousands of Muslims remained in east Punjab and they should not be abandoned. That is how that family remained in Ludhiana.

My attention to Maulana Sani was drawn by Baldev Raj Verma, owner of Naseem Hosiery in Ludhiana, whose father, Hansraj, was on the famous Japanese ship, Komagata Maru, in 1914 chartered by Punjabis, mainly Sikhs, to get to Canada. They were refused entry. It resulted in the emergence of the Ghadar Party and the first anti-colonial struggle in early 20th century in Punjab.

Mr Verma informed me that a famous Muslim family of freedom fighters from Ludhiana still lived in the town centre and were in charge of the main mosque, where thousands of Muslims congregated every Friday to pray. Ludhiana is the major industrial city of east Punjab. Indeed workers from all over India come and work there, among them a very large numbers of Muslims from UP and Bihar.

Maulana Habibur Rahman Sani informed me that his family belonged to the Arain biradari (patrilineage). His great, great grandfather, Shah Abdul Qadir Ludhianvi, was the first in Punjab to take up arms against the English East India Company in 1857. He collected a large fighting force, which included Muslims, Hindus and Sikhs, that drove the English out of not only Ludhiana but also Panipat. He then headed to Delhi with his men to support Bahadur Shah Zafar. He fell fighting along with thousands of others at Chandni Chowk in 1857.

In British records Ludhianvi is described as a fiery speaker who exercised considerable influence on the people in that region. Some reports incorrectly describe him as a Gujjar. In any event, the British deprived his family of their property and subjected them to other forms of persecution. The Arains in general were branded as a dangerous group, their lands were confiscated and they were excluded from recruitment in the army; hence their classification as a non-martial group.

However, his descendants continued to support revolutionary struggles and both the Ghadar Party and later Bhagat Singh's associates were aided by them. They also helped Subhash Chandra Bose cross Punjab safely into the North-West Frontier Province. The Tribune, Chandigarh, of Jan 7, 2001, carried a story on the anti-imperialist services of that family.

It is worth remembering that the British adopted similar harsh measures against the Bengalis and Biharis, and some tribes and castes from UP that took part in the Uprising of 1857. They were also declared unfit for military service. Therefore, excluding Arains from the army was consistent with British policy on rebellious tribes and castes.

However, in the ancient, Mughal and Sikh periods, Arains had held prominent positions, such as governors and army generals. Many gotras, or sub-clans, of the Arains bear names that indicate soldiering as an occupation. For example: Ghalar, Gahgeer and Goheer (ferocious horse of armoured corps), Gatku (fencer), Kavali (soldier patrolling while others rest), Basroo (observation post), Bahman (brave, uncontrollable or insurmountable), Bhaila (alms-keeper who walks with the commander when he is giving away alms after a victory), Daulay (those who got land in return for military services), Khatora (spy), Ramay (archers), Rattay (bloody, red, ferocious fighters), Ramday (red -eyed soldiers), Labanay (an army column equipped with batons), Jatalay (victors), Qutub Shahi: (soldiers or their offspring who accompanied Qutubuddin Aibak), Sappal (marksmen), Bahalwan (driver of a chariot), Mudh (logisticians supplying logistics and reinforcement to the army), Teerandaz (archers), Katarband (users of katar, a weapon used by ancient armies) and Bhutto (dwellers of high places).

It would be interesting if some filmmaker in Pakistan could depict the saga of Shah Abdul Qadir Ludhianvi on the silver screen. It would be important to contact his family in Ludhiana for more details, but more importantly the script should remain faithful to the true legacy of that great man. He was by no means a religious fanatic, although he described his struggle against the British as jihad. He was a patriot who joined hands with all communities in the first major struggle against the colonial takeover of the subcontinent.

well i heard of that story that they were soldiers and they were stationed at jericho to keep an eye on roman christians and they joined Mohd. bin Qasim and then they stayed back and Mohd. bin Qasim was killed by hajjaj bin yousaf because there was some conspiracy against him. Then those soldiers spread as far as multan due to Mohd. bin Qasim campaigns. later a famine in Sindh they migrated to punjab region for greener pastures. this is what i heard too. about their subtribes: they use titles according to their status in society Chaudhry, Mian, meher and also as i said use the places name to show that they belong to that place but they are arains Bhutta (may b a place dominated by Rajput bhattis), Ghurki ( a village near border in Lahore) , Shami( zero idea may b to emphasize the origin), Ramay & Ramday ( may b a place dominated by rajputs), Multani & Jalandhari( names of cities where they lives & lived).

Rajputs are not Kashmiri.

read what i mentioned.. rajputs have migrated and settled in kashmir but tthey are not kashmiris

I should have clarified I was referring to the Punjabi Muslim tribes. And no I never said the Arab or Turks vanished. But that line of reasoning can quite easily be contradicted by the example of the Norman invasion of England. In recent genetic testing, hardly any of the population of the U.K shows and "Norman" input, and if we go back and look at the Roman invasion, the same is concurred again. However, I won't go too much in to that as I don't think you actually want to discuss that.

Frankly I don't know enough about Pushtun tribes so I won't comment on them, as for Awans I come from that tribe. I have my own dna tested and I have also seen the results for a dozen others. There is nothing "arab" about their genetics, unless you count the paternal haplogroup which used alone doesn't prove "Arab" ancestry.

And people have changed ancestries in Pakistan and India, unless of course you are accepting that there are now more Syeds here than the rest of the world combined. I don't mind people claiming to be whatever they want, personally I just find it amusing when they can't back it up with anything concrete. I am not doubtful about my ancestry, already know where I come from.

It is just an academic discussion, no need to take it to heart, lad.

Why should I take it to heart ?
I am also talking about Punjabi Muslims, and my point is when according to you all Punjabis are from local blood lines then where all the invaders vanished ?
If we have foreign bloodlines in Pushtun belt. Though invasions were not much like in Punjab, then Punjab must have these foreign bloodlines, living inside Punjab.

I am not aware of anyone who wants to change his/her bloodline from original father. It's extremely disgraceful act.
