Why don't they march in Khulna? This project is implemented in Khulna. All of their protests are held in Dhaka. I think its important to consider what local Khulna people say about the project. We don't have much option for power generation. Gas is limited. Oil is highly expensive. What is the option for power generation?

At Central Shaheed Minar, a rally is going on to cancel Rampal Power Plant in Sundarbans. Cultural organization ‘Samageet’ is presenting songs to motivate the present people. ‘Go back, get out India’ is being pronounced by their voice.

The Shahid Minar premises and the surrounding area are filled to the brim at 3.00 pm on Saturday.

After 12.00 pm leaders and activists are coming with processions to express solidarity with the movement.

Various cultural organizations are presenting drama, poetry and songs from 12.00 pm in the place of the rally that is organized to cancel Rampal Power Plant by national committee of protecting oil, gas, current and mineral resources. These cultural activities continued till around 3.00 pm. Though the main segment of the rally was about to start at 2.00 pm, member of national committee Ruhin Hossain Prince announced the formal beginning of the rally at 2.45 pm.

In the meantime, the convener of the national committee Sheikh Mohammad Shahidullah, member and secretary Anu Muhammad, eminent writer and researcher Syed Abul Maqsud, leader of national committee Mujahidul Islam Selim, Haider Akbar Khan Rono, comrade Khalequzzaman, Altaf Hossain, professor of Dhaka University M M Akash, professor Badrul Inam, comrade Bazlur Rashid, Zunaid Saki, Mosharefa Mishu, Kallol Mustafa and Tipu Biswas have come to the rally place among others.

On the other hand, activists from seven parts of the country started their journey at 3.00 pm on Thursday to take part in the program ‘Cholo Cholo Dhaka Cholo’ for the call to implement 7-points demand.

This journey started from Rampal of Khulna, Chanpainawabganj of Rajshahi, Panchgar of Rangpur, Netrokona of Mymensingh, Cox’s bazar of Chittagong, Patuakhali of Barisal and Sunamganj of Sylhet. Many of them have reached Dhaka and some of them are on the way.

Leaders of national committee and organizer think that millions of people will be present in the rally.

Member and secretary of national committee Anu Muhammad has told, “We want peaceful rally. I hope the government will not interfere. In fact we have informed the National Human Rights Commission.”

He also has hoped that government will not hinder this peaceful rally and will cancel Rampal Power Plant to save the Sundarbans.

Though the left parties of the country have participated in the rally, Workers Party has not attended the rally. They have arranged a rally on December 3 to save the Sundarbans and to transfer Rampal Power Plant.

We will all love an anti-Indian feeling growing more. But, I have a personal conviction that Rampal will not be harmful. People do not understand the air pollution does not stand at the top sky of its sources, but spreads along the direction of the air blowing. BD air is already full of pollution created by India and China together by their coal-fired plants. When India and China each depends 40% for its source of energy from coal, BD depends on only 2% from a coal-fired power plant in the far north. Rampal will add only another 1% or less, I assume.

The National Committee to Protect Oil, Gas, Mineral Resources and Power, Ports has announced a worldwide protest programme on Jan 7 against the Rampal power plant in an attempt to save the mangrove forest, the Sundarbans.

The committee announced the protests at a rally at the Central Shaheed Minar on Saturday organised to demand cancellation of the Rampal power plant project at the vicinity of the forest.

Its Member Secretary Professor Anu Muhammad said at the Shaheed Minar gathering that processions and rallies will be held across Bangladesh on Dec 26 to demand immediate cessation of all activities relating to Rampal power plant as it is 'harmful' for the Sundarbans.

"A Protest Day will be observed worldwide on Jan 7," he added. He, however, did not elaborate whether rallies and processions would be organised abroad by respective chapters of his organisation.

The other anti-Rampal programmes include rallies in divisional and district headquarters on Jan 14.

The committee will also present a low-cost, sustainable and environment-friendly ‘mega-plan' as an alternative to the Rampal project on that day.

If the demand is not met within that day, the committee will enforce a half-day general strike in Dhaka City on Jan 26 and announce more protests, Anu Muhammad said.

The Jahangirnagar University economics professor called the protesters for getting inspiration from Liberation War martyrs ahead of the Martyred Intellectuals Day and Victory Day.

"Make songs, plays, documentaries to save the Sundarbans. Take protest programmes like rally, procession, and human-chain," he urged.

A procession was brought out from the Shaheed Minar after the rally which paraded the city streets.

The oil-gas committee had earlier organised a 'Padjatra', or march towards the Sundarbans, claiming that the project initiated jointly by India and Bangladesh to set up the coal-fired plant would destroy the mangrove forest.

The government and the project authorities have been denying the claim, saying the environmental damage will to be kept at the minimum level.

Anu Muhammad said at the rally that his committee has been protesting against the plant for five years.

"Had the government cared about logic, scientific data, people's opinions and country's future, then it would have stopped the project activities which are destructive for the Sundarbans," he said.

The economics professor said several researches have showed the 'harmful' sides of the project.

"No specialist, except those taking benefits from the Rampal project, is speaking in favour of the project. The government is knowingly feeding the people poison," he said.

He claimed the extinction of the Sundarbans will directly affect 3.5 million people and leave 50 million others unprotected from natural calamities.

He alleged the project aims to award India businesses.

Dhaka University English department Professor Emeritus Serjaul Islam Choudhury said there was 'no doubt' that the extinction of the Sundarbans will 'destroy entire Bangladesh'.

"Only 1 percent of the population who have sent their children abroad are doing this (building the plant)," he said.

Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) President Mujahidul Islam Selim demanded a public debate on the project.

"If we the communists get the power, the plant will be relocated from Rampal," he said.

Columnist Syed Abul Maksud called for a referendum to know the people's opinion on the issue.

BD Rahmatullah, a former director general of state-run Power Cell, said it would be possible to generate double the capacity of Rampal plant with renewable energy.

Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal (BaSaD) General Secretary Khalequzzman and Dhaka University economics Professor MM Akash, among others, spoke at the rally.

The National Committee to Protect Oil, Gas, Mineral Resources, Power and Ports yesterday announced to observe a half-day hartal in the capital on January 26 if the government does not scrap the Rampal power plant project near the Sundarbans.

Prof Anu Muhammad, member secretary of the committee, made the announcement from a rally at Central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka.

Earlier, around noon, thousands of protesters from different parts of the country gathered to attend the rally as part of their programme "Cholo, Cholo, Dhaka Cholo" (Lets march towards Dhaka).

The committee also decided to stage a countrywide demonstration on December 26 and observe worldwide “Global Day of Protest” on January 7 to press home their demand.

“An alternative mega plan made by the experts will also be presented on January 14 on ensuring sustainable and pro-environment fuel and power security in the country,” said Prof Anu.

“Though 35 lakh people, dependent on the Sundarbans will be affected and five crore people will be victim of natural disasters, the government wants to build the plant…,” he added.

Prof Emeritus of Dhaka University Serajul Islam Chowdhury said, “Those who have no patriotism want to build the power plant against the country's interest. They are talking about development, but it is the development for only 1 percent and will hurt the rest.”


Mujahidul Islam Selim, president of Communist Party of Bangladesh, urged the prime minister to join an open debate for finding a suitable solution.

“Our movement is for saving mankind and environment,” said Junaid Saki, coordinator of Gono Songhoti Andolon. The committee also urged all to observe Martyred Intellectuals Day and Victory Day with a voice to save the Sundarbans.

After the rally, activists brought out a procession that marched different city streets in Shahbagh, TSC, and Matsya Bhaban area.

সরকার'কে বার বার বলা হচ্ছে সাহস থাকে তো একটা গণভোট দেন। জনতা যদি আপনাদের সুন্দরবন পোড়ানো উন্নয়ন মডেল এতই ভালবাসে তবে সেখানেই আপনারা রায় পেয়ে যাবেন। কিন্তু আপনারা তা দেননি।

অথচ দেখেন ছাত্রসমাজ নিজেরাই উদ্যোগী হয়ে ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে তা করে দেখিয়েছে। সুন্দরবন বনাম রামপাল নিয়ে সমাজতান্ত্রিক ছাত্রফ্রন্ট ১০ হাজার ভোট সংগ্রহ করেছে। ১৭ নভেম্বর সেটার ফল প্রকাশে দেখা গেলো ৯০ ভাগ ভোট পড়েছে সুন্দরবনের পক্ষে। অর্থাৎ ৯০ শতাংশ মানুষ রামপাল প্রকল্প চায় না।

গণরায় ঘোষণা করে তেল-গ্যাস, খনিজ সম্পদ ও বিদ্যুৎ-বন্দর রক্ষা জাতীয় কমিটির সদস্যসচিব অধ্যাপক আনু মুহাম্মদ বলেন, সুন্দরবন পৃথিবীর সবচেয়ে সংবেদনশীল বন। লক্ষ বছর ধরে লোনা পানি ও মিঠা পানির সংমিশ্রণে এখানকার উদ্ভিদ ও প্রাণের সমন্বয়ে অত্যন্ত সংবেদনশীল ইকোসিস্টেম তৈরি হয়েছে, যা পৃথিবীতে অদ্বিতীয়। প্রধানমন্ত্রী একদিকে জলবায়ু সম্মেলনে পরিবেশ রক্ষার প্রতিশ্রুতি দিচ্ছেন, অন্যদিকে রামপাল বিদ্যুৎ প্রকল্প বাস্তবায়ন করে সুন্দরবন ধ্বংস করছেন। যদি সরকার ন্যূনতম গণতন্ত্রের তোয়াক্কা করে থাকে, তবে এই গণভোটের ফল তথা জনমতের প্রতি শ্রদ্ধা রেখে অবিলম্বে রামপাল বিদ্যুৎ প্রকল্প বাতিল করবে।

গত সোমবার ইউনেসকোর বিশ্ব ঐতিহ্য কেন্দ্রের ওয়েবসাইটে প্রকাশিত এক বিজ্ঞপ্তিতে এসব কথা বলেছে সংস্থাটি। গত ২৪ থেকে ২৮ অক্টোবর ফ্রান্সের প্যারিসে অবস্থিত ইউনেসকোর প্রধান কার্যালয়ে বাংলাদেশ সরকারের একটি উচ্চপর্যায়ের প্রতিনিধিদলের সফরে যাওয়া উপলক্ষে এই বিজ্ঞপ্তিটি প্রকাশ করে তারা।

পরিবেশ ও বন মন্ত্রণালয় সূত্রে জানা গেছে, সুন্দরবনের পাশে বাগেরহাটের রামপালে কয়লাভিত্তিক বিদ্যুৎকেন্দ্র নির্মাণ করা হলে সুন্দরনের পরিবেশগত ঝুঁকি না থাকার বিষয়টি ব্যাখ্যা করতেই প্রতিনিধিদল এ সফরে যায়। কারণ, এই বিদ্যুৎকেন্দ্রের বিরুদ্ধে ইউনেসকো একাধিকবার সরকারকে চিঠি দিয়েছে। সর্বশেষ গত মাসে সংস্থাটি বিশদ একটি প্রতিবেদন দেয়, যেখানে বলা হয় রামপাল বিদ্যুৎকেন্দ্রটি সুন্দরবনের ক্ষতি করবে না এমন স্থানে অবিলম্বে সরিয়ে নিতে হবে। তবে সরকার ইউনেসকোর ওই আবেদনে সাড়া না দিয়ে রামপাল প্রকল্প অব্যাহত রাখে।

গত সোমবার প্রকাশিত ওই বিজ্ঞপ্তিতে বলা হয়, বাংলাদেশের উচ্চপর্যায়ের সরকারি প্রতিনিধিদলের সঙ্গে ইউনেসকোর ওয়ার্ল্ড হেরিটেজ সেন্টারে বৈঠক হয়েছে। এতে ইউনেসকো ও আইইউসিএনের প্রতিনিধিদের সুন্দরবন বিষয়ে এর আগে দেওয়া সুপারিশগুলো বাস্তবায়নের ব্যাপারে আলোচনা হয়েছে।

প্রতিবেদনে বলা হয়, বাংলাদেশ আগামী ১ ডিসেম্বরের মধ্যে সুন্দরবন রক্ষায় তাঁর সরকার কী কী পদক্ষেপ নিয়েছে, সেটি ইউনেসকোকে অবহিত করবে। ইউনেসকো বাংলাদেশের অবস্থানপত্রটি পরীক্ষা-নিরীক্ষা করবে।

Title of this thread is "How anti-Rampal power plant has turned into anti-India protest" and not what you said. Rampal is not an Indian govt. project, it is a private company from India that is participating in Rampal. BD govt is insisting on it because the country needs electricity.

A coal fired power plant inside bangladesh's Sundarban mangrove forest area as Indian submarine base! Even the water nearby is shallow, and keep rising up and down twice everyday with tide. SWATCH OF NO GROUND MARINE PROTECTED AREA EXPEDITION


Announced on October 27, 2014, the Swatch of No Ground (SoNG-MPA) is Bangladesh's first marine protected area. It is located in the Bay of Bengal at the head of a submarine canyon. It spans approximately 672 square miles (1,738 square kilometers) and is more than 900 meters in depth in some locations. The area is a key breeding and spawing ground for dolphins, whales, sharks and turtles. The marine protected area was established for the long-term protection of cetanceans that inhabit waters offshore of Bangladesh.

Expedition in the Swatch of No Ground Marine Protected Area provide the ideal opportunity to opportunity to show solidarity for the conservation of marine life that proud us all and raise national awareness of the importance of marine life in our lives.
