ISLAMABAD (Saeed Chaudhry) – The retired General Raheel Sharif has reportedly accepted to take the charge of Islamic Military Alliance to Fight Terrorism (IMAFT) on certain terms.

Sources confirmed to Daily Pakistan that General Raheel Sharif, who gained popularity worldwide due to his strategic war skills against militancy that engulfed the country for years, has expressed his willingness to take the charge of intergovernmental military alliance IMAFT on the grounds that he be granted the position of an arbitrator between the belligerent groups in the Middle east rather than “abetting one single fighting group.”

Meanwhile, Iran has also assured to accept the general as a mediator in view of the circumstances in Yemen.

Sources told Daily Pakistan that Iran, through its consulate in Pakistan has sent a letter to the General, assuring that it will not only cooperate with Pakistan in tranquillizing the chaos in Yemen but also bring the Houthi rebels on negotiating terms, if he takes the command.

General Raheel Sharif expressed his willingness for the arbitration during his meeting with Saudi king Sulaiman bin Abdul Aziz, while the Turkey has also been informed about the plan, sources confirmed.

According to the sources, the offer was first presented to General Raheel Sharif by Saudi Arabia and then similar requests were made by Iran to Pakistan’s foreign ministry as well. However, the General will only accept the offer if he is given the position of an arbitrator.

The Islamic Military Alliance to Fight Terrorism (IMAFT) is an intergovernmental military alliance of countries in the Muslim world united around military intervention against ISIL and other counter-terrorist activities.When the coalition was announced there were 34 members; by March 2016 this had risen to 39.

Edit: Did it after reading some comments below:
First of all this alliance is nothing but "Lion on or of Paper " , R u guys serious about Gen will take charge of some thing which practically (alliance ) impossible, How many countries will provide Army(real army "fighting unties") and also They take casualties too like just say 200 dead per Alliance member (its a war).
Second all the countries in alliance have There own Political interests, Can u trust them all , Like Just say Egypt , can You trust Sisi after resent Developments.
What if Gen RS order Army from Egypt to Attack or Clear Area XYZ and later he find out Sisi stooped his troops and then pulled back, Apply same on all other countries .
3rd and most Important there is no charter or agreement or constitution or any other thing in written for this alliance , which involve all 34 countries (like EU or NATO) .
In short no legal thing is there.
4th , How many countries will stay in alliance of Iran brings like 10 Divs of Her Army on Borders or send more add (person + weapons ) to Yemen. What I mean to say " WAR WITH IRAN".(I can bat even ARABS will Chicken out).
Gen RS will not bring Pakistan in that scenario where we have to go in war with(against)IRAN.

So all this Alliance thing is nothing but a political move "Just to put Pressure on Iran" which did not worked , Its a dead horse and Our Gen will not ride IT.

There is a fair bit of details available to this news. It does seem authentic. If true, Gen. Raheel is going to lead a coalition of 39 countries.

This is really good development if true.

The wise decision to stay netural from Yemen conflict will pay off now.

Why would Gen Raheel leave a powerful post of COAS for PM which does not have much power in Pakistan. He is better of commanding the IMAFT. Good luck to him, may he finish off extremist jihadis world over.

IMO, he was officially requested to take command of IMAFT by Saudi Prince, during his last visit to Pakistan whereby no decision of Yes or No, was made as RS was serving as COAS. However, it would be great to see him leading the alliance as it would help to bring close all the countries whereby, PA experience that is widely acknowledged, would be shared and will be helpful to train the alliance force against terrorism. Also, by leading such force, it will be helping to strengthen the security by manifolds for all the alliance countries including Pakistan.
