I'm was bit puzzled by what was next to the 75mm cannon, over the driver position. For a moment I thought it was an SPG type. But different Turan II pics illustrated it was part of the turret, not part of the hull (as I initially thought).

M-60 is based on M-48 Patton and represents 1950’s technology. No matter how much you upgrade a 65 year old tank design, it cannot compete with the 30 years later designed tanks such as M1-Abrams because there is a limit beyond which up-gradation does not work and neither remains cost effective.

In my humble opinion, an upgraded M-60 would be in the class of Al-Zarar, good for secondry roles & infantry support but sadly no match for state of the art M1A2 SEP
Get your facts straight mate.

Al Zarrar is not used in secondary roles in Pakistani Armoured formations. Its used in front line formation, 6th Armoured Division, which is the spearhead of the 1st Strike Corps.
The 125mm gun is capable of taking any tank it encounters, so its not at all under-gunned in any way. Its gun is a major threat to all enemy tanks including T-90. Its 740 hp engine is good enough for this 41 Ton tank to cruise in semi hilly terrain of Southern kashmir and plains of northern Punjab.

The secondary role tanks in Pakistani Armoured Formations are T-59 M II and T-69 II, apart from T-85 III. T-59 M II and T-69 II are used in the armour regiments of infantry divisions, so their role is infantry support.
T-59 M II and T-69 II both arrived with 100mm Gun but were up gunned to L-7 105mm gun. One of the reasons was to share commonality with upgraded M48-A5 MBT 105mm gun also. Type-69 II had night vision back in 2001, but later thermal imaging as well was introduced in both tanks apart from other modifications.
105mm gun was considered good against Indian T-55 and Vijayanata MBT which were numbering somewhere around 3000 in 1980's, however 105mm gun was considered under-gunned in countering T-72 , which brought in T-85 III.
This still doesnt mean that Type-59 M II cannot hold on its own against an Indian T-72.

The major reason for bringing in T-85 III was due to its 125mm gun. In early 1980's, Pakistan had 4 types of MBT (T-59, T-69, M-48 and T-55). T-85 III came with its own set of problems and more acquisition was stalled. It still remained in formations like independent armoured brigades although it was meant to be accommodated with 1st Armoured Division.

Russian and Chinese 125 mm gun designs do not match the muzzle velocity of Rheinmetall 120 mm gun design. Another factor is the type of projectile in use. And I am not even touching the subject of protective measures of modern MBT designs.

It is foolish to assume that Al-Zarrar MBT can defeat any MBT in the world. Not even Al-Khalid. Shortcomings of Russian and Chinese gun designs are still there.

You are entitled to your opinion. I strongly disagree.
