Making Sense of India's Potential: Goldman Sachs' Timothy Moe

Despite a rough start to the year for markets and limited progress on headline reforms,
  • India will remain one of the strongest growth stories in the region,
says Goldman Sachs Research’s Timothy Moe, chief Asia Pacific regional equity strategist.

He views the current cyclical recovery – coupled with improvements in the ease of doing business that have largely flown "beneath the radar" – as positive signs for India’s long-term growth and corporate earnings environment.

The above are just 1 happening 'burb of Delhi NCR.

Reminds me of early 90's China from leaked pic.'s in the media. Internet was not openly around even if I had special access through 'school'. Especially the very first pic. looks from China of the era except for the choc-a-block Commie style Vs. the more 'designer' Indian way.

Indians should implement lane rules on their highways, Even these pics show there arnt even dividers marked on those wide roads.. It will help a lot in reducing the notorious chaotic driving conditions on Indian roads

Some of them are recently resurfaced city roads which look like they're yet to be marked. In the first pic, it looks like the markings have faded and need to be redone. Either way, I cannot disagree with your statement. Ahmedabadis in particular and south Asians in general, are terrible drivers.

^^^
Nice work all, pic.'s stand proof India is middle class behemoth.
Floozy colonial cities are moving on to middle-upper-middle bracket;
it's the upcoming 100 Smart cities that will really blow the internet and Modify India's image for good.

Each one a Dubai in the making, but just better.

WDFC updates:

@anant_s any idea when those 9000HP trains for the WDFC will be ordered? The WDFC will be operational by 2019 so the time to order will be soon.

Talgo has provided these coaches free of cost and borne the testing cost for these trials. If successful, India has proposed to manufacture these trainsets (RENFE TALGO 250) in India and eventually these will be used on Class A routes to provide upto 225 kph fast service where HST service is not possible.
The trainsets themselves will be ordered or just the coaches bro? AFAIK only the coaches have been brought to and tested in India and were pulled with IR trains.

JICA funded WDFC has already opened bids for 200 locomotives with bid from Mitsubishi, Toshiba and Kawasaki Heavy Industries. The tender is under negotiations and technical clarifications. I'm hearing one more news (cannot confirm), India wants Japan to extend the technology and manufacture these locomotives in India beyond 200 figure. First 60 of these locomotives will come to India in assembled condition, so maybe we can expect to see them by 2019.

Complete train set with power cars (2 per train, each train 9 coaches) will come.

Yes, these were tested with a WDP 4 and WDM 3D locomotive.

TALGO 250 power Car. Each RENFE TALGO 250 has 2 power cars at each end of the train.

The train is designed to go upto 250 kph (depending on track configuration and bridge structure along with availability of Signalling, section control and TPWS) without much modification of tracks (curve straightening etc)

The power cars are rated at 2400 kW (or ~3250 HP) under 25 kV AC traction. So two cars will provide an output approximately equal to that of a WAP 7 (6350 HP)

This train in Spanish configuration has 9 coaches (6 CC class, 2 First Class and 1 Pantry or Restaurant car) with a seating capacity of ~275 persons.

Now the basic advantage of using this system is that it doesnot warrant much change in rack structure which adds to cost for High speed networks. All we need is up gradation of tracks and signalling and these trains offer you semi HST travel (upto 225 kph).

Under present system of using LHB coaches with WAP 5, max trains are cleared to go are 180 kph (and 160 commercially)

WAP 5 has a speed potential to go upto 225 kph, but this will require changes in track structure and several civil modifications. These changes have already started to happen (for ex. Mathura Kota Section speed has been increased to 140 kph and several other class A routes speed have also been increased incrementally).
However Pan India change will take time and till then. TALGO 250 offers a highly cost effective solution for providing semi HST travel.

@anant_s bro, if the trainsets are coming also come come those TALGO 250 trainsets weren't trailed in India then, only the coaches?

+ I think you would appreciate this:

A lot of analytics going on.

As i mentioned earlier, as a standard practice, whenever speed is increased, railways conduct what is called Oscillation tests. These test determine vibrations and lateral movements during running.
the logic of putting Indian Locomotives for trial runs is that it will take time to adapt existing Talgo power cars with existing signalling and training of Indian staff to drive it.
By use of locomotives, IR has been able to test the technology quickly and decide further.
By what I've heard, the train has performed exceptionally well during 120 kph trials.

From what I understand @anant_s to operate at the top speed of these TALGO carriages (200km/h) would require the existing WAPs to be running flat out and even operating at just below this speed (say 180km/h) would be incredibly taxing for these WAPs over prolonged periods thus the TALGO 250 trainsets are rather essential if the carriages are coming so as to utilise them fully.

From what you say, this is the very first step in a long road to get these trains operational as the trainsets themselves would have to come to trail in India next and then operate as a full train with the carriages.
