What's new

why natural gas is the main energy of the future

More and more coal power stations are being closed and replaced by natural gas based ones.

Natural gas is used by probably > 50% of homes in the US for heating. Maybe slightly less so for stove/range cooking, hot water production, decorative fireplaces, and even clothes dryers. The reason being it is cheaper than using electricity or oil. More and more homes switch from oil heating to natural gas every day.

Are people willing to trade their gasoline tanks for a natural gas one...not sure. Would people be happy if prices went up...definitely not.

I think most people would be happy if fusion happens and electricity becomes dirt cheap.
They'd disconnect their natural gas lines, switch to all electric appliances, and get rid of their heating oil tanks in a second.
Then they'd charge their electric cars at home and everything would be peachy.

Natural gas is used for everything in industry. Those wind turbines people love so much. Without natural gas to make steel and cement and stuffs like that, there would be no wind turbines.

Lithium ion batteries are extremely energy intensive to make. That's where natural gas comes in.

Only question is what mode of transportation will be employed, pipelines or LNG tankers. I think pipelines are cheaper but where they cant be used they just liquefy the gas and put it in special ships and send them all over the world. Japan is a big importer of LNG.
A view of the special tanks for carrying the liquefied gas.

The problem is people are scared of them. We get a shipment here every so often and people get really nervous.

You want this outside your window or be anywhere near it...

Terminals can be built far away from the populated area.

Isn't Americans striving for shale gas ?

Just to cut gasoline imports. Nobody is switching to it for power generation or home heating.

If they find it effective who knows they are going to switch to shale completely

Natural gas is great for heating water. It heats in seconds compared to minutes by electricity. Natural gas is typically used for shower. Half of Ontario's electricity is produced from natural gas. In Canada hot water and heating is from natural gas.
