German Foreign Minister will visit Iran in October, as relations between Tehran and the West continue to thaw following the nuclear deal.

German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said on Monday he plans to travel to Iran in October, sending a strong signal that Europe's largest economy wants to quickly rebuild economic and political ties with the Islamic Republic.

Steinmeier, who will become the first German foreign minister to visit the country since 2011, said he wanted to get a first-hand impression of the situation in the country. His visit comes as relations between Tehran and the Westcontinue to thaw weeks after they reached a historic nuclear deal.

Steinmeier's visit follows on from a three-day trip last month by Economy Minister Sigmar Gabriel, who became the first senior figure from a large Western government to visit Tehran since it struck a landmark nuclear agreement with world powers.

British Foreign Minister Philip Hammond on Sundayreopened his country's embassy in Tehran, four years after it was stormed by protesters angry at Britain's backing of sanctions against Iran over its nuclear program.

After meeting with Hammond on Monday, Iranian President Hassan Rowhani said Britain and Iran "should act with a new view toward the future."

Under the July 14 deal, agreed after more than a decade of negotiations, US, EU, and UN sanctions will be lifted in return for Tehran imposing long-term curbs on nuclear activities which the West has suspected are aimed at making an atomic bomb.

German exports to Iran collapsed as a result of the sanctions, leading to China replacing Germany in 2007 as the major supplier of goods to Iran.

While the nuclear deal is seen as a major opportunity by some, including US President Barack Obama, hard-liners in Washington, Israel and some Persian Gulf countries have opposed it.

I like germens , i really do . donno why considering the fact that according to polls , they hate us the most among all other EU nations .

I think most of Iranians have positive views about germany .

whatever the reason , i think everyone is suddenly crawling back to Iran .

the question is : is it really just because of the lifting of sanctions ? i doubt so . there is more to it .

Because they were not like British, French or Spanish to **** up almost every single place on this planet and make people suffer during colonial eras. About World Wars, I have my reservations about who actually is to blame and what led to those wars. At least they didn't harm us in those wars.

Iran courting German, Italian auto firms

Iran’s media say the country has suspended plans to cooperate with Peugeot and is instead preparing to take up talks with German and Italian auto majors to encourage them to invest in its car industry.

“Previously, everyone was expecting the signing of a cooperation agreement between Iran Khodro and Peugeot in light of the July nuclear breakthrough between Iran and the P5+1 group of countries,” wrote the Persian-language newspaper Donya-ye Eqtesad.

“However, it appears that … Iran is already engaged in talks with more attractive partners,” the daily added.

Speculations that Iran’s largest car manufacturer Iran Khodro is preparing to sign a deal with Peugeot to launch a new joint venture in the country emerged in May. It had been reported then that serious talks to the same effect had taken place between the two sides in Paris.

However, Peugeot soon became the target of criticisms in Tehran over its 2012 decision to withdraw its Iran investments under US pressures over disputes on Iran’s nuclear energy program.

“Iran Khodro had finalized its talks with Peugeot before March and was preparing to sign a JV deal with it upon the conclusion of nuclear talks between Iran and the P5+1,” wrote Donya-ye Eqtesad.

However, after Iran Khodro saw the enthusiasm of global auto majors to invest in Iran, they suspended plans to team up with Peugeot and started talks with other companies including Germany’s Volkswagen, added the daily.

“This never means that Peugeot has been removed from Iran Khodro’s list of potential partners,” it said. Rather, it appears that Peugeot is no longer a ‘key partner’ in the eyes of Iran Khodro leaders and they are now more inclined toward potential German and Italian partners, it added.

Donya-ye Eqtesad has further emphasized that Iran Khodro has already started talks with Volkswagen and drawn serious partnership plans with it.

“Therefore, one should now wait to see what Peugeot’s reactions to this would be and whether it will still try to court Iran’s biggest auto producer or simply walk away”.

German aircraft engine manufacturer MTU Aero Engines says it is in talks with several Iranian airlines for supplying maintenance services.

“MTU has great interest in supporting Iranian airlines with maintenance services,” Reiner Winkler told Euro am Sonntag weekly, Press TV reported.

The talks with Iranian companies, he said, are done in consultation with German and US export control authorities.

“In Iran, a lot of Western-manufactured aircraft engines are in use which have an elevated demand for maintenance,” he added.

Iran’s airlines are still facing stringent Western restrictions for supply of plane parts and services, according to officials.

The country's civil aviation is under US and European sanctions which have led to a series of plane crashes in which hundreds of people have lost lives.

Last month’s agreement on Iran’s nuclear program has generated hopes of an opening, with leading international aircraft manufacturers indicating interest in business with Iran.

Officials have said Iran would need 400-500 civilian aircraft worth at least $20 billion in the next decade to renovate its aging fleet.

On Thursday, Minister of Transportation Abbas Akhoundi said Iran was in talks with Airbus. The minister made the announcement after meeting French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius who visited Tehran following Akhoundi’s trip to Paris to attend an air show in June.

“Airbus, as one of the European aviation companies, comprises about 50% of Iran’s aviation fleet and in this regard, we are in direct negotiations with the company to renovate our fleet,” Akhoundi said.
