RIYADH: Saudi Arabia’s top cleric hit out at Iranian film “Muhammad” on Wednesday describing its portrayal of the Prophet Muhammad’s (pbuh) childhood as a “hostile act” and a “distortion” of Islam.

Iran’s most expensive movie, which opened nationwide in the Shia Islamic republic last week, depicts the prophet (pbuh) on screen, an act that is prohibited in Sunni Islam.

“This is an obscene work… It is a distortion of Islam,” Saudi Arabia’s Grand Mufti Abdulaziz al-Sheikh told Al-Hayat newspaper. “It is a hostile act against Islam.

“This is a mockery of the prophet and a degradation of his status,” he said.

Shia Iran and Sunni Saudi Arabia, the birthplace of Islam and home to its two holiest sites, are regional rivals and frequently accuse each other of seeking to destabilise the Middle East.

The Mecca-based Muslim World League also condemned the movie, insisting that portraying the prophet (pbuh) is prohibited.

The league’s secretary general Abdullah al-Turki urged Tehran to “suspend and prevent the screening of the movie” and called on Muslims to boycott it.

While Iran has denounced cartoons of the prophet (pbuh) like those published by French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, Shias are generally more relaxed than Sunnis about depiction of religious figures.

Directed by Majid Majidi, the visually stunning 171-minute film cost around $40 million (36 million euros), partly funded by the state, and took more than seven years to complete.

Majidi says the aim of his work, the first part of a trilogy, is to reclaim the rightful image of Islam, which he said extremists have distorted.

Iran has been making movies like these for a while now and I am glad someone is finally talking about it.

making statues of someone and making movies is almost the same thing, they should start making posters and statues too and they write on them that islam preaches peace:hitwall::hitwall::hitwall:

lol

What are ya'll gonna do about it? Blow yourselves up in every country bar Iran? Okay haha. Go right ahead.

Edit: that includes you outraged Pakistanis. Getting all worked up over a movie that doesn't even depict Mohamad's face. WTF is there to get worked up over? Even if they had shown his face? Though THEY HAVE NOT.

Go on youtube and see who's watching them. 90% of the viewers are Pakistanis and Iraqis. Apparently lots of people have been talking about them. They just haven't been saying the things you have in your mind. Now commence the blowing up sequence.

Shias like to make pictures of Imam Hussain and hang it all over their places of worship as if they saw him with their own eyes. It wouldnt surprise me if they are to do the same with Prophet Muhammad.

Only 40 mil hollywood can spend that on a superbowl add, time to move some of the US film industry to Iran

I thought its ban in Islam. I remember at least one big riot in India as Prophet Muhammad's picture was published in a school history book along with some other great religious leaders like Budha, Nanak, Jesus etc Lot of innocent lives ruined in that riot.
Now It appears that it is not prohibited in Islam but in Sunni Islam!!!!

it is not forbidden to have pictures of Imam Hussain
it is for our prophet
if you don't make the difference ... what can i say ... lol

Though it is a controversial subject, it is not a bad idea to educate modern time generation about Islamic history using more innovative, out of the box thinking and using latest technology. By using this media, attention of present generation can be captured. I have see the movie made on Hazrat Yousuf . I feel no shame in saying that it is very informative, excellent piece of direction and costumes. In my opinion that movie is fit to be nominated for oscar. I have seen Ashab e Kahaf, again a master piece on history. I am sure Iranians must have done a good job on this movie as well.
