Metro Train Pact Today

Well Like I defend Metro bus back those days, I would like to defend Metro Train once again. One big criticism is true that when you wanted to build Metro Train, what was the need of Metro bus?

Besides that I think it is more about wrong priorities. Any big city nowadays need a metro train with some of them additionally supported by Metro bus like projects. But we certainly needed Metro train before the bus service. We should have built this infrastructure at least 10-15 years ago.. and if the demand was still overwhelming, we could have thought of providing additional bus service in 2014.

That's really pathetic of Punjab Government to do what is right at later stage and make an infrastructure just to allure vote bank that we may no longer be as important after the Orange metro is built. Having said that, I believe most of the route of both Metro Bus and Metro Rail do not run side by side so it shouldn't be a great deal in the end.

Ager metro train banani hi thii (which i think is a good decision) to metro buss per paisa kiun barbaad huwa?

Big difference between train and bus service and the area they covered even combined they can't keep up with demand, but i think this is the right investment This can kick start the economy of Lahore and whole of Punjab.

Look at the map of metro system and tell me again that you think that it is a thoughtless plan.

Your political ideas are getting ahead of you. You fail to see the obvious. The Metro system seems designed for a switch-over to all train operation. This is not only the case in Lahore but also in Rwp-Isb too. How is that bad planning?

I will agree with you that the priorities are misplaced. But I will disagree when someone alleges that Metro system is a waste of money. It clearly is not so. The beneficiaries are Urban poor and middle class. These people were totally ignored by the last government. Do you remember PPP' price hike of wheat in 2008/9? Do you know what it did to urban poor?

Your cynicism is incredibly myopic.
Well, I have not seen how Pakistan runs...Mind you I did take public transports and hence know what it is like....

Mine are opinions based on what I read not something you will have to swallow like how you are making others bite yours...Instead of hurling abuses and assumptions on other's ability try checking your own to discuss...or make others understand....Politics is a dirty business but it doesnt mean supporters need to roll in the mud with it!

I just had a look at post 31 and yes the map looks impressive...However, in my opinion the bus should serve where the train cant go...That is how cities are planned and I see that in the map in post 31...

Now lets move to the next set of questions which lead to development , cost, fuel, punctuality, usage (who can afford and who actually uses), speed, maintenance

This was my exact reaction...Surprisingly you are not picked on but some people, who seem to enjoy picking my words!

Atleast they should fund the 23Billion PKR Metro bus system for peshawar from the federal budget.

With this much money,They can fund the metro bus in almost 5-6 cities.Once the metro bus was introduced into the top 10 major cities of Pakistan. They should have moved to Metro train but starting from karachi, since in karachi it is needed the most.

Peshawar is the responsibility of KPK government not federal government, just as Karachi is the responsibility of Sindh government. This project is between Punjab government and China.

After 18th amendment provincial assemblies have all the power to take any decisions, if they want they can start ten projects for Metro trains tomorrow. The only cause to complain can be if Federation refuses to give guarantee (like it did in case of Punjab) which has not happened yet.

Those living in Khi/ Peshawar should ask this question from elected representatives.

to hell with you and your 18th amendment. What I know that Karachi is being neglected by both provincial and federal govts and people of Karachi are being abandoned by both to die and rot.

Peshawar is the responsibility of KPK government not federal government, just as Karachi is the responsibility of Sindh government. This project is between Punjab government and China.

Whole Pakistan is responsibility of federal govt. What type of BS is that???

Just after elections IK said in interview that he will not build metro bus even if federal goverment financed it. But right now looks like a part from train there is also metro bus project in planing stages. By next year Peshawar should also have metro bus.

Sindh and KPK can do that its not the ppp or any party to be blamed for everything. Actually these both provinces are not assigned the budget to initiate metro project in a single city Like Karachi which is gigantic. Furthermore these PMLN leaders are doing good and bad thing but badness has upperhand here as it is increasing our lease.

@Contrarian thank you for stating something that most others failed to pick up.

@Aether I appreciate your view. We agree that Metro is not a priority. But I would like to defend the decision making on following grounds:

1. As contrarian aptly pointed out that Metro train system costs much more than Metro Bus. Do you remember the noise made about wasting precious resources? Can you imagine how much more criticism would have been heaped on Punjab Govt had it been a Metro train project. Most of the people criticizing now would have criticized regardless. Their problem is that PTI did not win, not anything to do with actual merits.

2. Punjab gov was hard put to deliver BRT. From where would have they found money to build Metro train? Federal govt under PPP did everything in its power to crush Punjab's every initiative that required a guarantee from federal govt. Metro train system just could not be built. That is the honest truth.

3. Prior to building Metro Bus system we had Zero experience in establishing any such system. Nobody would have financed a project like China has now done. We gained a lot in design, construction, and running of Metro bus system. Our Turk brothers provided much needed expertise as free consultation and project management. Having a successful project under our belt gives confidence for successful implementation of future projects. We can not expect a deal like this to materialize out of thin air just because we should have planned it this way or that. Success begets success, failure begets failure.

4. Just to repeat, the Metro Bus system in place now could be converted to a Metro train system with minimum hassle a couple of decades later. By then it would have illustrated its utility and made millions of happy consumers.

@Akheilos Learn from Aether: similar points minus politics and cynicism.

Well stop electing people on the base of what language they speak and elect them on their qualification and what are they willing to do for the city or province that elect them.

Whole Pakistan is responsibility of federal govt. What type of BS is that???

Yes but mass transit and hiring and firing bus drivers is the job of the city.

Those saying why they build metro bus. In western countries bus and metro train go hand in hand, buses can go to areas in which building metro train line will not be feasible in cities.

And those crying about Karachi, ask MQM walas and PPP. Peshawar and Lahore are planing it while you guys are crying punjabi discrimination.

So since these cities haven't voted for PML(N) so federal govt would left them to rot. Is this what you want to say?

great...what about southern Punjab Multan, Bahawalpur..?
Faisalabad deserves it before Multan as we are twice the size of Multan in population. And above that contribute 60% of exports. Kamau beton ka pehla haq hota hay.
