Rawalpindi - April 21, 2012:

Update Avalanche Clearance at Gayari Sector Siachen

The weather has once again turned very cold due to overcast conditions and chilling winds. The bad weather posing difficulties in rescue activities but could not affect the pace of work at site.

The excavation work is being expanded with help of men and material. A probing search was carried out at three spots. Some life jackets, pieces of Igloo and medicines have been found at the site.

These items were found 600 Meters from the original location. The items recovered showed the magnitude of destruction and nature of the avalanche.

The entire process of initiation/striking down of avalanche took less than five seconds as intimated by WAPDA Team Hydrological experts.

Re: Avalanche traps about 150 Pakistani soldiers

The army chief today to the media at skardu that we will keep up the effort even if it takes two months or a year. We will dig up the whole mountain if we have toandwill get those soldiers back

That IMO was a good statement by the chief.

I agree we will dig out the mountain if we have to ....we can do it we are Pakistan Army

This is the statement of a true soldier. If some one is not interested in thread please don't visit it but PA will continue to find and lay their comrades to rest where their loved ones want to with full military honour, may it take years.

You see truck's two wheel tires with the wires protection, I have seen here. Does it make smooth easier in just snow?

It is cool.

Do you have any idea how to install snow chains in our car of next year winter?

You live in Canada and don't know of snow chains?..
we used it in Abbotabad when we were kids.
Snow chains for cars are a bit tricky, you cant drive over 20Mph with snow chains and if it snaps it wrecks your car.
Snow socks are bit safe and you can drive faster with them, but less effective than snow chains.

Well, I never question about snow chains. Phele you used it, interesting.....Maybe I will not purchase new tires, i will research more.

Thanks, bro!

This thread is not for these types of questions/discussions.

Let us keep our attention on the recovery of the soldiers buried under the avalanche here.

Thank you.

(I merely pointed out the help given by the chains in the recovery effort.)

Salt might have been sprayed over the affected area in Gayari sector.

Some personal belongings of soldiers have been found, 600 m away from where the camp stood. Just says alot about the enormity of the impact.

Must not be done, is too dangerous. It will lower the melting point of ice and could cause floods, but the chances are minimal as the temperature is around -40 degree.

salt has limited effectiveness on ice such deep and compact..
its effective for roads and thin ice.
Plus as the above comment says..wont work at -40 anyway.

Salt makes snow good enough to move on. But that would have been done in the early stages, when it was fresh. Now, other impurities would have mixed with it.

BTW, any news about the findings from the first tunnel?
