China's piracy hurting its own industries

Yes you have become Socialist and we have become State Capitalist.

Please tell me what is the difference between "State Capitalist" and "National Socialist" as practiced by Germany and Italy in the 1930's and 1940's? Plato thought that the best government was one of rule by a "philosopher king". To me the CPC is trying to play the role of the "benign dictator or philosopher king". Trouble is, human beings are susceptible to the seven deadly sins, including greed and pride, etc. So eventually the philosopher kings become corrupt. That is China's trajectory unless it enables a wider political participation by the "masses". The question is: Can China become a great power before the internal contradictions of its authoritarian, amoral system corrupt it?

For myself, I truly want China to become more democratic. I want this both for the Chinese and for me, an American who does not want to see World War III.

I guess it isn't enough that you choose to spam the China defence section with all your anti-China articles.

Now you're copying the exact same threads into the World Affairs section too.

I would hardly classify this topic "anti-China". Chinese members need to chill out. Piracy is a problem that affects the world. I'm willing to bet most of the members here are guilty of it. I know I am :P

Canada is a developed country. Unfortunately, China is only a developing country. The average Canadian is TEN times richer than the average Chinese. Isn't it common sense to demand a higher standard of behavior from developed Canada and Spain? Instead, why are most people constantly bashing China?

The anger should first be focused on developed countries that are pirates. Canada and Spain are rich and have the resources to tackle the problem. Until developed countries clean up their piracy problem, it is unreasonable to expect a higher standard from poor developing countries like China.

Canada still bad boy of piracy: IFPI - The Globe and Mail

"Canada still bad boy of piracy: IFPI

Well, we’ve done it again.

The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry released its annual state of the music business report and slammed Canada for being the developed world's bad boy of piracy.

The annual Recording Industry in Numbers 2010 numbers show music revenue declined 7 per cent globally, but highlighted that in several markets, sales actually rose.

“Global music sales in 2009 fell by 7 per cent. This is disappointing, but amid the decline...no fewer than 13 countries saw music sales grow,” said IFPI chairman and CEO John Kennedy in a press release . “Reducing piracy is critical if these improvements are going to translate into long term recovery for our global business.”

However, when it came to Canada, the IFPI had nothing good to say.

“Canada, practically the only government of a developed country not to have implemented international copyright treaties agreed over a decade ago, is a major source of the world's piracy problem. A disproportionate number of illegal sites are hosted on Canadian soil.”

While revenues to record companies fell by 7.2 per cent to $17-billion (U.S.), Canada just barely escaped last place with a 7.4 per cent decrease in music sales in 2009. Spain saw a even more staggering fall decline of 14.3 per cent.

According to the report, Canada’s status as piracy bad boy is because it has not signed on to a global international copyright treaty. The report touted the two countries as having “some of the world's weakest legal defences against piracy.”

However, in other parts of the world, music sale showed a spark of life, much of which the IFPI credited to stronger legal measures that have been implemented to fight file sharing.

Music sales grew in 13 countries in 2009, including in Australia, Brazil and the UK. The report described digital sales in some of those markets as rising at very encouraging rates.

Digital music sales rose by 9.2 per cent to $4.3-billion (U.S.), a ten-fold increase over the value of the digital market in 2004. The IFPI said digital channels account for a quarter of all revenue to record companies, and in the U.S., digital sales account for 43 per cent of the recorded music market.

'South Korea and Sweden in particular saw striking returns to growth, showing how an improved legal environment can help impact on legitimate music sales.'”

Not a damn thing except a convenient and misleading label.

Plato thought that the best government was one of rule by a "philosopher king". To me the CPC is trying to play the role of the "benign dictator or philosopher king".
This is typical of socialists and communists -- a belief in a benevolent dictator or dictatorship. Or 'God'. Any ideas why personality cults are common in communist countries?

Trouble is, human beings are susceptible to the seven deadly sins, including greed and pride, etc. So eventually the philosopher kings become corrupt. That is China's trajectory unless it enables a wider political participation by the "masses". Not possible for China...

Martian 2: "Why pick on China?"

Because China has the most egregious balance of trade deficit with YOUR country. China is unfairly sucking jobs out of YOUR country by a variety of unfair trade practices, including theft of intellectual property. Why don't you have some sympathy for YOUR fellow citizens? Why are you constantly defending Chinese exploiters at the expense of YOUR fellow workers? Have you no compassion for YOUR fellow Americans?

Sheesh, you don't have to get mad at me. It's a challenge to support the underdog. This is merely an academic exercise. No need to make it personal. However, your point is well-taken. I better tone it down before they run me out of the country. :-) I think I'll lie low for a while.

By the way, happy holidays.

Best regards,

Martin

Martian2,

It is long past the time that you should be regarding the PRC as the "underdog". If you want to regard Taiwan as an underdog, I am right there with you. But NOT the PRC. The PRC is a great success because it's people are very intelligent and hard working. BUT, also, they do not play by the same rules as American companies. They are amoral in their dealings with the enemies of OUR country, such as the Sudan, Iran, North Korea, etc. They steal patented western technology for use in their home markets and in any other markets that have no intellectual property protection enforcement. So, a part, not the whole, but a part, of the success of the PRC comes from "gangster" behavior that is not acceptable or permitted by YOUR country's laws. You should show some solidarity for YOUR fellow countrymen IF you share their values.

NON-CITIZENS! This was corrected over 100 years ago! Is China a baby civilization???? I thought China was the MASTER Civilization. Why is intellectual property not protected today??? If China is such an ancient culture shouldn't it have accomplished this by now?

That fella martin 2 you quoted is a Chinese student in the US , who while he despises the US( see every post he makes) , despises its military and always posts as such against the Us- The freaking irony is- Thanks to our democracy, he gets to still live in the US and speak his mind. Although, I doubt he opens his mouth away from his local china town friends. if he had done so in china , he would facing its famous firing squad :)

Yes, and projected to overtake the US economy within slightly more than a decade. :azn:

Even today, Obama is begging for China to keep buying US treasury bonds, and to loan money to them to cover US debt. Money which they then use, to increase their trade deficit to us.

But India is only the 11th economy, far behind even Brazil. With more poor people in India than even in the Africa, I think it's even more absurd that Indians keep claiming they will be a superpower.

China is so far ahead of India (2nd largest economy) yet Chinese leaders have never once claimed that China will be a superpower. It's the Western media that keeps claiming that, not China.

So India is the arrogant one. How can you possibly claim you guys will be a superpower when you're so far behind even Brazil, and you've got more people in poverty than even the continent of Africa?

In a decade, ROFL. the best projections put you 30- 40 years out. that too if it will happen...

China is so far ahead of India? India is 1/3 of your GDP growing at the same rate, just like you are 1/3 of The US.

whats your poverty level- we would not know , because you commi's ban that information and I doubt even do a study on it. for all we know, given you had only 40 years ago had close to 30 million people die of starvation - one can only wonder.

Obama nor US begs , you buy because its a great investment. Do you buy NK 's currency? they beg all the time..why not. duh!

It's not my fault that the webmaster deleted our thread on Taiwan and I filled the time with mainland China issues. My view on U.S.-China relations is pretty clear. Governments are like forces of nature and they are almost impossible to influence. "What will be" will come to pass, whether we like it or not.

If someone had not taken the challenge of arguing the other side in the U.S.-China debate, it would have been rather dull. Think of my role as a defense lawyer. No one likes the defense lawyer, but only through rigorous debate will the truth emerge.

Anyway, I'm taking most of the holidays off. Also, I do not have a wish to aggravate my fellow Americans. I'll let you debate the controversial issues with the Chinese nationals. Good luck. :-)

Best regards,

Martin

Do you even think before you write buddy. :azn:

Firstly China's economy is four times bigger than India's, and growing faster. India has tried before to break double digits but never made it, after it went to 9% it went back down again.

Now this is from Bloomberg:

China will overtake the U.S. to become the world’s largest economy by 2020, helped by faster expansion and an appreciation of its currency, according to Standard Chartered Plc.

China’s economy will be twice as large as the U.S.’s by 2030 and account for 24 percent of global output, up from 9 percent today, Lyons said in the 152-page Super-Cycle Report.

yeah those great financial institutions of thought that predicted we would never have a housing crisis and one of them that contributed to the housing crisis AKA Goldman Sachs. Good luck banking with those sources. and notice the word " MAY" in that title = speculation.

at best its low 3x... you guys are even suspected to inflate your numbers.

LOL I'll take the word of Bloomberg, Goldman Sachs and Standard Chartered... over the word of an anonymous Indian forum member, any day.

So basically both the things that you said were wrong, and I'm glad we finally cleared that up.

Martian2,

Have a restful and happy holiday!

Sincerely,

P.S. The PRC does not need a defense lawyer here at the PDF. And, especially, it does not need a Taiwanese-American defense lawyer.

IMHO, of course .......
