If the pattern repeat as for the last few times, it is not unlikely the US will sanction Pakistan after it withdraws from Afghanistan, and perceives it no longer needs Pakistan.

The US will need someone to blame for what happened in Afghanistan (rather then the corruption of the Kabul regime) and according to the Interviewee from the right wing think tank AEI, Michael Rubin, should a major atrocity occur in Afghanistan during or after a government collapse in Kabul, Pakistan will face the backlash.

I’m sure the Pakistani government is well aware of this risk, and hope it is doing what it can to prevent it from materializing. Realistically, IMHO, We could be going back to the relationship in the late ‘90s by the end of the year.

Michael Rubin?

Lmao another irrelevant populist journalist. These are the once truly harming American reputation around the world.. Make no mistake this is a populist article and doesn't align with US policies but populists like him damage US reputation on daily basis and they wonder why are we losing the propaganda war

I really really hope they do. Final nail in the coffin. The Americans are all bluff though.

I really hope they drop this façade of aid and grants. They pay our poor elites pocket money to buy loyalities and in turn Pakistani people payback ten times more in terms for this corruption. It might even get us to stand on our two feet someday. Though I agree with you that Americans are smart enough not to do this--who'd want to kill this great deal. You pay a few traitors and rent out an entire country.

You posted a video by a Hindutwa having a rant against Pakistan and finds some obscure guy to amplify his hate filled diatribe. From the moment go he says "state sponsored terror" and I was like "yawn".
Caveat: As long as Afghan soil is not used as base for anti US or anti Western jihadi activities USA will do nothing other than pay lip service to Taliban reducing female rights or killing opposition on large scale. This means Taliban should learn from 1996-200. Do what you want inside Afghanistan but if you get embroiled with groups with ant-western agenda or get involved in ant-western demands like what TLP wanted with France then expect a reaction from USA which could go from sanctions on the lower scale to being drone bombed on the upper scale.

Time has moved on so does US needs to move on too and taking off the list off non Nato ally makes a lot of difference since we are getting plenty of benefits. Threats against Pakistan hasn't worked before so what makes them to think sanctioning us again will make us to do things any different. We have got our own core interests like US and we have got every right to live in our own country with respect dignity and freedom. We are not sending black water thugs to maul other counties like US government paid and sponsored did in Libya, Syria, Iraq , Iran, Somalia and so forth so designating state sponsored terrorist state rings hallow here. Enjoy the company of India till it lasts and like every good time sooner or latter they will all come to an end. Alienating Pakistan is not a one sided affair and geographical location alone of Pakistan can cuts US off from 10 other counties.

I brought it up to raise awareness of what they are planning. I’m sure the Government and military are working on building its narrative and planning for all contingencies. It was in the 90’s that the US was negotiating with the Taliban for the Unocal pipeline (probably mostly through Pakistan) and it won’t be any different if they want to mine there once the dust settles in Afghanistan. Besides alienating Pakistan will create a country less likely to stay neutral via a vi some more ambitious Chinese interests in the region. The US is still gonna need Pakistan to keep an eye on groups like ISIS-K from growing in the region, as well as being not only a counter balance to China and Russia in Pakistan, but through Pakistan, possibly an alternative for Afghanistan and the Central Asian countries, like Kazakhstan, which wants to maintain a separate identity from the Russians. Working with Pakistan, is also the best long term way to hope the Taliban are not isolated and therefore the lives of Afghan people, for which the US sacrificed 20 years, has a chance to have any meaningful peace.

1997, Sugarland Texas where the Taliban were holding meetings with Unocal executives. At the end of the day, the strategic calculus will be about mutual benefit. Just like after the Vietnam war, the two countries, after some time, normalized relationships, and now focus on common interests.
