ISLAMABAD: President Dr Arif Alvi in an attempt to forgo the VIP culture refused to leave the Lahore airport till the protocol awaiting him outside was sent back.

The president after his two-day visit arrived at the Allama Iqbal International Airport Lahore and revealed on Twitter that he will only be stepping out till the 32 cars sent to him for protocol are sent away.

“My continuous struggle to keep security but reduce protocol that inconveniences people. Am at Lahore airport and there are 32 cars to escort me waiting outside. Will wait until they are sent away before I move out,” read his tweet.

It was later disclosed that the president utilised only five of the 32 cars sent to him for security purposes.

Dr Alvi has been perpetually maintaining his opposing stance on the protocol given to him, as earlier in September he had expressed his displeasure at the VIP treatment given to him from Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport to his residence in spite of him requesting not to.

The long chain of official cars following me is despite the fact that I asked all officials present at the airport not to embarrass me with a huge protocol and that one or two cars in front and one or two cars behind may satisfy their security needs. Did not happen. We have to try harder,” he had tweeted earlier.

Four days ago, the president visited Quetta where he was given a massive protocol that resulted in traffic jam in the city.

What do you mean?

Good effort, but tweeting about his presence at some public place is ultimate stupidity and breach of security protocol. Why advertise?

If the president wont feel safe neither will locals...If president is safe enough to advertise himself, we should also feel safe....It is a bit of psychology there too...when the leaders behave as locals to show they represent the local population - as done in Europe...

I think we all know that security situation in Pakistan is still not at the level where we can afford stupidity of losing head of state, prime minister or any other high profile ministers just for sake of psychological points. It's not that I care about politicians, but any unfortunate mishap will put stain on country which will take years to roll back at domestic (psychological effect) and international levels (impression of Pakistan becoming safer). All this "without protocol incidents" are showoff and for public consumption only, if they were serious about it than they would have abolished the bluebook or at-least amended the rules to end VIP culture, unless they do that the security agencies are bound to follow it otherwise in case of any mishap they will be held responsible for not following the described SOPs.

I think comparing it with Europe is not realistic. Even the position of US president is kept secret despite the use of top notch security with most advanced technology.
