‘Will build our own fighter jets’: PM Hasina

He want Bangladesh to go through coal powered heavy industrial development like Japan did in 19th Century. Using renewable energy or even oil, gas would be putting curt before Horse in his view! Very much Communist like thinking. Talking about IT or 4th industrial development is a pure blasphemy! He want us to rediscover the wheel and needle again ! Unable to accept that, world has moved since then.
Hey if @bluesky has a dream of Yamato in Chittagong harbor... who’re you and I to stop that dream to become a reality ? :usflag:

Five stages of economic development no longer applies as an universal roadmap dude.. BD is well in the middle of the take off stage....

You will see many LDCs completely ignore primary and secondary sectoral development on the way to becoming developed countries....

The latest economic idiom is quite simple....internet has made the world closer and traditional lag in technology vs aspiration can no longer exist ad infanitum.

Additionally the globe only has certain capacity by sectors, each country in the world can not be a mix of sectors. Comparative advantage now will span regions. Regions maybe spanning continents will specialise on particular areas as nation states gives away to regional identities.

Everything evolves....BD is right to focus on the 4th industrial revolution....BD has one of the largest free lance IT workforce in the world. In the next few years we may actually end up seeing something very unique and first in human history... an equal distribution of working population between primary, secondary, service and IT sector in a country.
Irrespective of mixes of many sectors, the5 stages applies invariably to a ragtag unplanned BD. Read it before you indulge in making comments by reading some other's comments. It was the UN that changed the term a little to appease many underdeveloped countries who complained about being tagged like that.

However, is BD not still a traditional society (note the lifestyle of people) and is making an unsuccessful attempt for the take-off of the economy? If not, re-define it to make me understand it is not so.

Now, you will go after $1,800 GDP per capita which is bigger than India. But, is it not true India builds its own power stations all the time, and BD cannot? India built Farakka and other dams, but higher GDPwala BD cannot buildup its river embankment system causing floods every year. So, India is in the Stage of a developing poor country and BD is in the Stage of an underdeveloped hopeless country.

Now, you will also complain that the term 'Underdeveloped' is no more applied, thanks to the insistence of all these good-for-nothing corrupt countries to the UN and other international organizations.

However, this does not change the reality and does not change the Stages of economic development BD is in. It is in between the traditional society (watch the lifestyle of majority people) and Pre-conditions for take-off (note the ill efforts to build a few prestige projects with foreign aids).

Out of five non-linear stages of development, BD is in between one and two. Please tell me why my assessment is wrong. If things go well, it will take at least a few decades, or at least a century, to reach the economic take-off stage.

It is not a matter of being correct and incorrect.

I do not agree with your interpretation because the world has moved on from 1960s Rostows stages of economic growth. The theory has evolved with time and it has absolutely nothing to do with the UN and it is no longer applicable. 20 years ago when i was at uni studying economics it was considered outdated.

BD economic sector is broken down as follows... Agriculture contributes to 14.23% of GDP employing 37.7% of working population, industry 35.66% of GDP employing 21.6% of working population and services contributing 50.11% of GDP employing 40.6% of working population. That is not the model of a traditional society but that of an economy in take-off. In traditional societies are 80% plus are working in agricultural sector.

The above figures are from wiki and the following article.

You have taken some very selective items to compare. Let me deconstruct some of these.

You claim BD economic planning is uncoordinated. It could be better i admit but uncoordinated ..... no. You do not get to become one of RMG leaders in the world out of thin air. This is not a primary product like oil where you become a world leader like saudi, iran or Venezuela just through sheer dumb luck. BD established and then captured the market through hard work and clear planning that maximised our comparative advantage in labour. Not only that the nation had to connect itself to markets and establish global logistics lines of operation that is second to none. These all happened through clear planning lead by both the public and private sector.

India builds damn..so what? How many countries in the world has this specific know how? BD has many rubber dams that it has implemented to retain water and ensure navigability. Your analogy is false. Large scale dam creation is simply not possible in BD, because our flat country offers few opportunites for hydro-power.

It would be the same as me belittling japan by saying it has failed to come up with a programming language. It uses globally available technology to serve its need. This is no different to BD and rubber dams.

BD has exploited its comparative advantage and built up everything from scratch post independence as it was severed from British Raj era economic connections. India on the other hand retained these advantages and infastructure.

You clearly have some axe to grind. Its perfectly cool by me.

I have little time to read through your long post, but if the world has moved, tell me how BD also has moved also? It remains in the 6th century mindset with little above the traditional lifestyle. What is your opinion when it is the reality in BD?

Read also other two books, "Asian Drama" and "Soft State" that say about the ingrained corruption which is responsible for the non-development of countries like BD. Read all the books and do not please talk about the 1960s because BD society remains in the long past and we have to move towards the 1960s.

Without reading important books, you are speaking here like a big Pundit. Do you think it is acceptable? Get rid of your high-nosed attitude and also learn the process through which your England and other Mediterranian Europe started development. It was certainly not by talking big that you and Hasina love to do. Read the contribution of England to take the world to the 21st Century.

I addressed your point on my post.

Do you not see the irony of telling me to go read books when you can not be bothered to read my post?

I was not taking about 1960 for the sake of it. You are quoting an economic model from 1960, the model is no longer relevant.

I am not a pundit but do have a bachelors in economics so I am not unfamiliar with the topic.

As i said i am completely fine with your position but it is myopic. You should desist from conflating economics with politics they are not always mutually inclusive.

Am I myopic or you and your govt are myopic, whereby I think of the long-term implication of the present shortsighted GoB policy on economic developments.

Talking of building fighter planes seems long-term, but in reality, it is a short-sighted myopic and a long talk without essence because the technological background is totally absent in the country. However, I totally accept the govt position of spending/outlaying quite a few thousand crores of Taka to offset the ill effects of Coronavirus in the economy.

It is exactly in accordance with the Keynesian Theory of Economics, and I accept it.

Imagine , if there no creation of Bangladesh. They would be flying F16 and JF17 by now , top of the line AWAC system. Latest navel equipment etc

Who or what is my government? I did not realise i was the GoB spokesperson.

You asked me to prove you wrong on your take on where BD is in Rostows model, i did exactly that and gave you numbers to back my argument. Why dont you come back with a counter narrative.

Also you do realise that Keynesian model of economic growth can not happen in a traditional economy. Are you implicitly conceeding that BD is in take off zone?

No I can not imagine it. I can however imagine languishing in the bottom of every social barometer and being second class citizen in a country we created.

Well fed by nationalist media...anyway good luck. We still housed thousands of Bengali who escape from your country last few decades ..

It's a combat jet we're talking about & not some mass rape allegations that you can make up, ugly hasina.

You are still a second class citizen of India. Lol

BD will get some contracts to manufacture some wires and bolts for an IAF fighter program.

Hopefully its j10 woth TOT from china.

Like i said BD should have taken up the offer of in-house production of BGI when it was offered 10 years ago by china Experience counts on these matters. And bd would have had a massive number of combat planes which would atleast have been usefull for defense. If you cant beat them with tech, you can always overwhelm them with numbers, the way soviets did. Very short sighted desicion back then. I hope Bd makes the correct call now

I really hope its J10.

can someone tell her fighter jets are not garment items nor her master india able to make till now  , only few countries in the world includes Pakistan are able to make own fighter jets.

she also suggested we will name is BF-Bangabandhu

I heard that SAC is short of a lot of money now. BD can consider investing in SAC. You can get the J-31.
