What's new

Vietnam-China economic relations

No I didn't.

If you have 400dong/kWh electricity, but you can only satisfy 1% of your demand, and the rest of your electricity has higher price, the weighted average price of your electricity may still be higher than China's.

Just from this instance, we can all see that you lack basic skill of data analysis. Serious.

You need to understand the concept of weighted average in math. That is the real pricing nature of your electricity.

So, can you explain to me why thousands of Vietnamese local hydropower plants are being forced to limit the number of hours of electric generator a year less than their capacity?
If EVN not buy their electricity, they also cannot sell their electricity for whom, because EVN is single power supply company in Vietnam now. So they [the local hydropower plants] are suffering losses.

Why did not EVN buys all of electricity with cheap from the local hydropower plants instead of buying Chinese electricity more expensive?

Do you know that EVN has signed with a power supply company in China that if EVN does not consume all electricity which it had signed up to buy, then residual electricity will return to China, then EVN will be fined money?

My question is still: what motivates the Chinese to sell electricity below their market price to you Vietnam?

That is money they need to get back for their power plants, so simple.
Do you know that Vietnam still sell electricity to Cambodia while buying electricity from China? That's because economic efficiency, not political.

Saigontourist expects to welcome around 80,000 international tourists, mainly Chinese, traveling on the cruise ship SuperStar Aquarius from November this year to March next year.

Some 80 trips of SuperStar Aquarius of StarCruises will bring tourists on the routes from China’s Sanya to Halong Bay and Danang City during the period. The ship owner arranges three-day and two-night tours linking Sanya to Halong Bay and four-day and three-night tours taking in Sanya, Halong Bay and Danang.

Each week, Saigontourist will welcome three cruise trips in Halong Bay and one in Danang. Foreign cruise travelers will enter the country on passports and laissez-passers.

“This is our big deal. Last year, we served many tourists traveling on this cruise ship and 40% of them come back this year. Especially, tourists show strong interest in and feel impressed by the beauty of Halong Bay,” said Le Quang Thang, manager of Saigontourist’s Shorex & Port Agency Department.

This year is the booming time for the cruise tourism segment with estimated year-on-year growth rate of 25-30%.
“We anticipate the number of cruise tourist arrivals will amount to 130,000 in this year and 80% of the plan has been completed,” Thang said.

Cross-border Vietnam-China trade comes to a standstill
Last update 22/08/2012 9:10:00 SA (GMT+7) - vietnamnet.vn

VietNamNet Bridge – Vietnam’s exports to China across the border gates have dropped sharply since March, 2012. Meanwhile, the situation is believed to last to the end of October at least.

The border gate in Mong Cai district of Quang Ninh province has been closed for the last month, thus making the cross-border goods exchange stagnant.

Vietnamese goods owners said the Chinese authorities have sent thousands of officers to the new inspection stations installed along the border line. This is for the first time in the last many years China prohibits goods to go across the border. In the past, the bans were applied several times, but goods still go through the border at some certain hours of the day.

At the border gates and the customs clearance points, very few goods were seen loaded to the ships on August 9 and 10. Meanwhile, there was nearly no container vehicle in circulation on the same days on the Highway No. 18.

According to the Mong Cai City People’s Committee, by August 9, 3800 containers of goods of different kinds, including 1314 cold containers, had got stuck at the border gate.

An enterprise specializing in importing goods temporarily for re-export later to China reportedly had to ruin the consignments of frozen food which had got stuck at the border gate for one month. An executive of the company said the company had no other choice, because it did not have money to pay for the electricity to keep the products frozen.

The cross-border import-export activities have also become quiet since June at Tan Thanh border gate in Lang Son. The Chinese authorities have strengthened the goods inspection, people and transport vehicles, and intensified food quarantine. Earlier this year, about 300-400 vehicles carrying goods crossed the border a day. Meanwhile, the figure dropped to 200 in early August.

As for the Chi Ma border gate in Lang Son province, Vietnamese goods also have not been exported because the Chinese authorities have reinforced the control over the temporary imports to Vietnam for re-export later to China. At present, only some kinds of farm product, including cassava starch, still have been exported to China.

In Lao Cai province, the rubber and sugar exports to China have also dropped dramatically due to the new cross-border trade policies applied by the Chinese side.

The Vietnam Ministry of Industry and Trade has affirmed that the slowdown in the export of goods to China should not be attributed to the Vietnamese side. The relevant agencies at the border provinces have always been creating most favorable conditions for enterprises to make trade, while Vietnamese enterprises have been completely capable to clear the goods.

The ministry has affirmed that Vietnamese exports to China have been decreasing significantly in both the volume and turnover.

In the first seven months of the year, the exports going through the Mong Cai border gate reached 2.607 billion dollars, just equal to 79 percent of that of the same period of the last year.

The reason behind the exports slowdown is the reinforcement of the supervision, anti-smuggling and quarantine activities. One or two such campaigns are carried out by the Chinese side every year, each of which lasts one or two months.

However, the latest campaign has been lasting four months already, and it is believed to last until the 18th Chinese Communist Party Congress in October finishes.

China only focuses on its activities to fight against smuggling within its territorial area. Meanwhile, there has been no sign of Chinese changing its trade policy with Vietnam.

Just the beginning

This is called "you need us a lot more than we need you." Come to think of it, we don't really need you at all.

The same thing has happened in the past when the U.S. imposed unilateral economic sanctions on other countries and locked them out of its multi-trillion market. China is imposing a "soft" embargo on the Vietnamese economy. Anti-Chinese policies and publicity come with a price.

Don't worry, this is just the beginning. Wait until China starts squeezing other countries that trade with Vietnam. The U.S. used to do this all the time. If you trade with Iran/Vietnam, we will lock you out of our banking system, market, etc. This will lead to a sharp reduction in Iranian/Vietnamese trade with other countries.

Why do you think most countries are too afraid to offend the two largest markets in the world (e.g. U.S. and China)?

Do you remember when the Norwegians held their ridiculous Nobel Prize ceremony for a Chinese criminal named Liu? China locked Norwegian salmon out of the Chinese market and the Scottish have replaced the Norwegians in selling billions of dollars of salmon to China.

China has the power to decide who benefits from the Chinese market. It can be either the long-time Norwegians or the newly-selected Scots. Screw with China and you'll end up a loser. That's guaranteed.

Is this a new Filipinos bananas?

Vietnam can do the same thing with Chinese goods? Yes, VN can. This is easy because most of the Chinese goods exported to Vietnam have many problems, eg copyright infringement, toxic excessive...

Into the economic pit you Vietnamese go

It's exactly the same thing as the Filipino bananas.

China has $2 trillion in foreign trade. They don't care about your $1 or $2 billion in Sino-Vietnamese trade. China can import coffee and shrimp from other countries. We won't miss you. China has roughly $200 billion in annual trade surpluses and it's sitting on $3.4 trillion in foreign exchange.

However, Vietnam would have to pay double or triple the price to replace Chinese machinery. Your economy will grind to a halt. Ha ha.

You play foul.
The cross-border trade halts since March and suspends approximately until October: 6 months!
As the report states Chinese reinforcement of the supervision, anti-smuggling and quarantine activities used to take 1-2 months. This number increased to 4 months, and now takes 6 months.
How can you explain the increase?

I find that is not funny at all, that you choose such move to destroy the livelihood of others.

Pray that China doesn't extend the heightened scrutiny for years. They can really hurt you if they want to.

I remember watching an interview where the Honduran government begged the U.S. government for an exemption to the U.S. law requiring all 20-foot containers to be pre-scanned before shipment to the U.S.

The Honduran government said they couldn't afford the multi-million-dollar X-ray machines and the Honduran port would have to shut down if the banana exports to the U.S. were blocked. They also said it would ruin their economy. You Vietnamese are roughly in the same boat as the Hondurans. You're in deep trouble.

In case you missed in the article, this year is the first session of 18th Chinese Communist Party Congress, so everyone is being a tight a$$ right now. If China wants to use trade as a leverage in dealing with Vietnam, it will say so. Otherwise what is the point of doing it? Destorying a few Vietnamese farmers livehood doesn't really make in the piority list when it comes to making a major decision in trade policy.

To remind the Vietnamese that anti-Chinese protests against Chinese sovereignty in the South China Sea carries a price.

China has imposed the same penalty on the Philippines.

These two idiot countries will understand that vocally opposing China carries an economic and possibly military price. You do not screw around with China lightly.

Vietnam depends on imports from China, which is fabric and garment accessories. This goods, Korea, Japan, India can fully provide for Vietnam.

Of machinery and equipment imports from China, which are cheap but low quality products, low initial cost but expensive in maintenance, repair and maintain production. Therefore, alternative machines from other markets is always better. Moreover, there is no machinery imported from China will be an opportunity for Vietnamese industry.

China has nearly 1.4 billion people who need to feed. If they are hungry, they will put pressure on the CCP... [Ha]

China has blocked all Norwegian salmon for two years now. Anyway, China doesn't even notice the six-month block on Vietnamese imports. China just reported a $25 billion trade surplus. In case you haven't noticed, your Vietnamese currency is sinking and trade deficit is rising. Let's see which country can last longer.

We have 100 reasons to hate China, but we do not resort to such stupid things.

With VN, can survive the immediate damage but the long-term benefit. You dont know that Vietnamese industry has been competitive very strong by machines cheap imported from China.
I would be happy if in the next 5-10 years, the Vietnamese market will be flooded with goods made in Vietnam, instead of flooding goods with hieroglyphics today....
