ULYANOVSK, Russia, Aug 1 (Reuters) - NATO forces should stay in Afghanistan until their job is done, Russia President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday, suggesting they should stay beyond a planned withdrawal of most combat troops in 2014.

"It is regrettable that many participants in this operation are thinking about how to pull out of there," Putin said at a meeting with paratroopers in the Russian city of Ulyanovsk. "They took up this burden and should carry it to the end."

Most will be leaving after 2014, but there will be military trainers and money to support the ANA and police to maintain stability.

Haha Putin is trolling.

The recent attacks by militants in Tajikistan and Uzbekistan has kinda pressed the troll buttons of Putin

Most will be leaving after 2014, but there will be military trainers and money to support the ANA and police to maintain stability.

Anything more to reality will come after US elections can't say much on this!

Clever.. Indeed he were referring towards NATO incomptency in completing their task. but looks like NATO entrusted ANA to complete a task wat they failed to achieve, Is ANA is better then NATO ?

If ANA was up for discussion Putin may have called on them too but it's the NATO who he wants in Afghanistan - ANA is a domestic asset not Putin nor his father can tell them to stay in Afghanistan or leave!

Putin is smart, he knows Afghanistan is a drain on USA/Nato resources.

Yeah Putin is smart:

* Putin says NATO should stay in Afghanistan longer

* Russia worried 2014 pullout may destabilise region

* Russia makes Ulyanovsk airport available to NATO

ULYANOVSK, Russia, Aug 1 (Reuters) - NATO forces should stay in Afghanistan until they have finished their job to ensure stability, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday, criticising the planned withdrawal of most combat troops by 2014.

Putin reiterated Kremlin concerns that the pull-out of the U.S.-led alliance, due to start next year, will leave the Central Asian region south of Russia vulnerable to militant violence and drug trafficking.

"It is regrettable that many participants in this operation are thinking about how to pull out of there. They took up this burden and should carry it to the end," Putin said at a meeting with paratroopers in the Russian city of Ulyanovsk.

"If there is no order in Afghanistan it will not be calm on our southern borders. The current (Afghan) leadership will have difficulties keeping the situation under control. NATO member states are present there, and are performing this function," he said.

"We need to help them (NATO). We should not be fighting there again. Let them sit there and fight."

The Soviet Union fought a disastrous war in Afghanistan in the 1980s and Russia ruled out sending troops to aid the U.S.-led invasion after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

But Moscow has supported the NATO operation by allowing transit across its territory.

It expanded that support with an agreement that took effect on Wednesday allowing the alliance to use a transit hub in Ulyanovsk to send non-lethal supplies in and out of Afghanistan using the Russian rail network and air transport.

Putin said the transit hub agreement, which has drawn criticism from Communists and others saying Russia is allowing an enemy on its territory, in fact benefited Russia - which is otherwise often at loggerheads with the alliance.

"It corresponds to our national interests. On many other issues we have disagreements. We have different approaches, opinions." Putin said, reiterating his description of NATO as a "throwback to the past, to the times of the Cold War".

Well ! I don't see any reason of including that bold part in your post.. My that question
Is ANA is better then NATO ?
was referring to the future NATO plans and their so much expectations from ANA to look after a challange which they failed to eleminate in whole decade. after all they are going to be your financial supporter in future . how can they expect more from others to achieve something with comparitively limited financial support which even they don't manage to complete with full financial and professional backup?

Dear K-Xeroid,

Building and training the Afghan National Security Forces is part of the plan to ensure Afghanistan is capable of independently protecting itself once our forces leave. The progress shown by the ANSF so far suggests that this goal is not beyond reach. ANSF have already taken the lead in many areas, and the way they’ve responded with speed, skill and courage to recent terrorist attacks in Kabul. The job is not done, but we are making progress, and we are working closely with the ANSF and our regional partners to address issues such as the cross-border attacks.
